Reduce Reuse Recycle Beth-Anne Knapp Walden University PUBH Dr. Raymond Thron Summer 2009 Song Reduce Reuse Recycle by Jack Johnson plays in the background. Good morning! My name is Ms. Knapp and I would like to thank your teacher for having me here today to talk to you a little bit about what it means to reduce, reuse, and recycle as the song is singing about. I m hoping I can help you understand why it is important and what you can do to help our Earth. 1
What do you throw in the garbage? ddwtmja3 Before I start talking, can you all take a turn a tell me what you throw in the garbage everyday? 2
What do you throw in the garbage? Everyday, we throw away, leftover food, candy wrappers, yard waste, toys, more toys, plastic bottles, clothes, furniture, and more. In the United States, nearly 180 million tons of trash each year ends up in garbage dumps (EPA, 2009). <Pictures come in as they are said; garbage dump pictures come up when described> Reference: US Environmental Protection Agency. 10 US Environmental Protection Agency. (2009). General overview of what's in America's trash. Retrieved July 17, 2009, from According to the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly half of our garbage is from paper sources. About 20% is from our yards like grass and branches from trees, nearly 10% each from metals, plastics like plastic water bottles, and leftover food. Lastly, about 13% is a mix of other things like leather and wood (EPA, 2009). So what happens to all this garbage when it enters the garbage dumps or landfills? Often it is burned to reduce how much space it takes up. 10
ddwtmja3 ddwtmja3 When it is burned, the smoke or carbon dioxide enters the air and contributes to the greenhouse effect. 11
ddwtmja3 ddwtmja3 Every day, more and more greenhouse gas enter the Earth s atmosphere and this is causing changes in our weather. In fact the earth has been warming up 1 degree fahrenheit. These changes can be directly linked to the garbage we make every day. 12
ddwtmja3 ddwtmja3 Here we have a picture of Mr. Earth and everything that goes on with him. On the top of his head, we can see the gas entering the atmosphere from burning of garbage as well as using cars too much. This is causing Mr. Earth to be sad and become sick as the oceans are warming up and causing the ice to melt where it shouldn t be. 13
How many of your parents read a newspaper everyday? ddwtmja3 <Look for show of hands from the class> 14
Did you know that if every person in the United States recycles their newspaper, 41,000 trees would be saved! And over 6 million tons would not be put into garbage dumps! 1 6 million that is like 6 elephants! 1 Museum of Science and Industry. (2009) Smart home. Retrieved July 17, 2009, from Wow! Looks like about half of you! 15
16
What about water bottles? Well if you throw that plastic bottle in the garbage, it takes over 700 years for the bottle to break down. 1 1 Museum of Science and Industry. (2009) Smart home. Retrieved July 17, 2009, from 17

Reduce Reuse Recycle <Jack Johnson song Reduce Reuse Recycle plays softly in the background> Reduce Reuse and Recycle! 20
Reduce <Jack Johnson song Reduce Reuse Recycle plays softly in the background> Reduce Reuse and Recycle! REDUCE One way to do this is when at the store with your mom and dad, encourage them to buy in bulk. The amount of what you are buying increases and the packaging decreases meaning less waste ending up in the landfill! Less is more is a good guide in that less packaging means more product and less in the landfilll! Reference: US Environmental Protection Agency. (2008). Climate change and municipal solid waste (MSW). Retrieved July 17, 2009, from 21
Reuse <Jack Johnson song Reduce Reuse Recycle plays softly in the background> REUSE Use reusable products. For example, when your mom or dad goes to a coffee shop, remind them to bring their own cup! That is one less cup in the landfill! When you have a picnic, make sure your family uses plates and silverware not paper plates and plastic silverware. The paper plates and plastic silverware end up in the landfill! Maintain and repair durable products. So if you get a hole in your pants from playing out on the playground, ask mom or dad to sew it instead of throwing it away! Have mom and dad buy fluorescent light bulbs as they last longer then the other ones. So less light bulbs in the landfill. And also, better use of energy! Reuse bags, containers, and other items. For your lunches, bring home the ziplock bags your sandwiches and chips are in and use them tomorrow! Borrow, rent, or share items used infrequently. For example, when mom and dad are going to do a project around the house and they need a tool they don t have, encourage them to borrow one from a neighbor instead of buying one themselves, especially if they are just using it one time! Sell or donate goods instead of throwing them out. Donate your clothes when you grow out of them. Also, buy your clothes from a thrift shop. This too helps other people as well as filing up the garbage dump! 22
Recycle <Jack Johnson song Reduce Reuse Recycle plays softly in the background> RECYCLE Choose recyclable products and containers and recycle them. When grocery shopping, tell mom and dad about products that you can recycle their packaging for example plastic water bottles and aluminum cans. Encourage mom and dad to get a recycling bin if they don t have one and make sure to place recyclable items like plastic water bottles, cereal boxes in the bin to recycle each week. Select products made from recycled materials. For your school notebooks, make sure you pick out paper that has been previously recycled. Also tell mom and dad to buy computer paper made from recycle paper. Compost yard trimmings and some food scraps. Reduce the amount of garbage you generate. Instead of throwing away fruit and veggie scraps, work with your mom or dad to make a compost pile. You can put fruit, vegetable, paper, coffee leftovers, and eggshells into your compost. The compost helps make the soil very rich for plants to grow AND it reduces garbage that lands up in the garbage dump! 23

ddwtmja3 <Jack Johnson song Reduce Reuse Recycle plays softly in the background> So today, I d like you to collect all the garbage from your lunch and keep it in a trash bag. For tomorrow, your teacher is going to take you outside (or inside if it rains) and you will have a picnic. Think about how you can reduce the amount of garbage you produce and talk with your mom and dad about this picnic. Your teacher will send a note home with you in your backpack. After your picnic tomorrow, you will collect your trash in a bag. Then, as a class, you will look at the difference and talk about what each of you did to reduce your waste! 29
