2 Introduction Established in the early 1990's, Halspan very quickly built up a reputation for innovation. First, we developed an entirely new way of constructing a door using door blanks made from 3-layer particle board. We were also the first company to offer a full range of testing. We didn t just test one door blank to see whether it could be used as a fire door we tested every conceivable door configuration and mode. 14 12 High Performance Door Products The Functions of Locks The overall function of a lock is to retain the door leaf in closed mode in the door frame. There are 3 modes of operation: Latch feature The door is retained in the closed mode by a retractable latch tongue operated by a lever handle. Latch/lock feature As above with the addition of a lockable bolt operated by a key or manual turn operation. Deadbolt feature As above with the omission of the latching function.
