1 ART PROJECTS FOR SCOUT TROOPS NATIVE AMERICANS Native American Clay Pots Compliments tours of Kidseum and The First Californians exhibit at the Bowers Museum. Scouts learn the process of working with clay to create their own pinch pot. Scouts will apply designs and symbols used by the Native Americans of the South West. The Native American pinch pot is created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. Scout troops can extend the art making fun by painting the dried pots with acrylic or tempera paint. If your troop does this project, please make sure to bring boxes to transport the pots back home. Sand Painting Compliments tours of Kidseum and The First Californians exhibit at the Bowers Museum. Scouts will create a sand painting using glue and colored sand to show their understanding of the Diné healing process.

2 CALIFORNIA HISTORY Cochineal Painted Textile Compliments tours of California Legacies: Missions & Ranchos Scouts will discuss the history of cochineal and the science of making cochineal dye. They will then mix their own shades of cochineal dye using common household items such as lemon juice, to create different shades of red, and paint their textile with a pre-printed flower design inspired by artifacts in the Ranchos exhibition. They also can add additional colors and detail using markers. California Ranchos Cattle Brands Compliments tours of California Legacies: Missions & Ranchos Scouts learn the history and reasons for the making of elaborated Spanish brand designs, used to identify a rancho s cattle. Scouts will create a unique cattle brand using their own initials on a paper hide. Landscape Painting Compliments tours of California Bounty Scouts will view and discuss the different painting techniques used by California Plein air painters. They will apply these 19 th -20 th century painting techniques by creating their own landscape painting using watercolors.

3 CHINA Chinese Clay Dragons Compliments tours of Kidseum and Ancient Arts of China. Scouts create their very own sculpture of a Chinese Dragon as they learn the significance and importance of the dragon in Chinese art and literature as a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. Troop leaders can extend the art making fun by painting the dragons after their visit with acrylic or tempera paint. If your troop does this project, please make sure to bring boxes to transport the dragons back home. Chinese Scrolls Compliments tours of Kidseum and Ancient Arts of China. Scouts learn the process, traditions and importance of calligraphy, brush painting, poetry, and signature stamps in Chinese art. Scouts will create an original work of art applying Chinese Scroll Painting Techniques such as brush painting, Chinese character drawing, and ink printmaking. PACIFIC ISLANDS Clay Spirit Masks Compliments tours of Spirits & Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands (recommended for grades 6+ up). Scouts create their own masks inspired by one of the many masks in the Spirits & Headhunters exhibit. The Clay Spirit Masks are created with air dry clay and will be almost dry the next day. Troop leaders can extend the art making fun after their visit by painting the masks with acrylic or tempera paint.

4 MEXICO Guadalupe Textile Prints Compliments tours of our special Virgin of Guadalupe: Images in Colonial Mexico exhibit Scouts will decorate and design their own Guadalupe textile print. This special exhibit will allow scouts to analyze and discuss a variety of paintings, sculptures, engravings, textiles and silver. Scouts will experience not only religious but artistic and festive images of Colonial Mexico Guadalupe Foam Printmaking Compliments tours of our special Virgin of Guadalupe: Images in Colonial Mexico exhibit Scouts will draw and design their own original Guadalupe image on special Styrofoam paper. Scouts will then print their images using brayers and printing ink. This exhibit will allow scouts to compare, contrast and analyze 60 works of art from both privately and publicly held Mexican collections. Any art project can be customized to suit a troop s interest in a particular culture, artistic material, or badge requirements.
