All programmes of the University are subject to the University s Quality Assurance and Enhancement processes as set out in the DASA Policies and Procedures Manual. Students must pass taught modules (120CATS points) to be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma;
3 Students with protected characteristics Are students subject to Fitness to Practise Regulations (Please see General Regulations) Length of Programme and taught modules (120CATS) plus the Research Project module (60 CATS points) to be eligible for the award of a Master's degree. The pass mark is 50%. Diploma students, who achieve at the first attempt an MSc standard of performance in coursework and examinations, will be invited by the Board of Examiners to transfer to the MSc pathway. Students on the MSc programme, who have achieved a minimum of 50% in the compulsory modules and an average of 50% or greater overall in the taught programme, are required to undertake a Research Project and submit a dissertation in September. This dissertation must be passed at 50% for the award of the MSc. Candidates who fail a module at the first attempt shall be permitted to retake that module at the next available opportunity for a maximum of the pass mark. Candidates who fail any module at the second attempt will normally be required to withdraw from the University. The Research Project dissertation will normally be submitted within a period of no more than 2 years after the completion of the taught modules. Only one resubmission of the dissertation will be permitted, for a maximum of the pass mark. Students who achieve an average of 65% or more in the taught programme and also 70% or more for the Research Project dissertation, with an overall programme average of 70% or more, will be awarded Pass with Distinction. Students who achieve an average across all modules from 60% to 69% will be awarded Pass with Commendation. Students who achieve an average across all modules from 50% to 59% will be awarded Pass. No Barriers. No Fitness to Practise programmes are those which permit students to enter a profession which is itself subject to Fitness to Practise rules MSc is 1Year F/T, or 2-3 Years P/T; PG Dip is 9 Months F/T, or 18 Months P/T; PG Cert is Variable
4 Educational Aims of Programme On completion of the programme the student will be able to: Develop practical and professional skills in the critical acquisition, analysis, interpretation and understanding of Construction Project Management. Develop a holistic approach by integrating the technical knowledge of design, engineering and construction with financial, legal, IT, commercial leadership and managerial skills of business administration in the management of simple to complex projects from project conception to construction engineering and maintenance; and construction organisations; e.g. construction economics and finance, strategic management, information systems, construction law, international construction markets and competitive advantage. Develop critical and analytical problem solving skills across a broad range of subjects and transferable skills that relate to literacy, numeracy, computing, teamwork, group work, and personal presentations and interactions to prepare graduates for more general employment. Develop the ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical management methods in the analysis and solution of design, engineering and construction problems. The major difference between the MSc and the Diploma is the independent Research Project and associated dissertation undertaken by MSc candidates after completing the taught programme. The Research Project provides an opportunity for students to independently produce a structured research document with clear aims and objectives, stating hypotheses to be tested within a relevant CPM area. The research will include a review of research methodologies, a comprehensive literature review and the development of research questions to test their hypotheses in a social sciences research context. The dissertation will clearly communicate their analysis of the data obtained, how it may or may not align with literature or agree with their hypotheses. It will also discuss implications for practice within the construction industry. Critically analyse, evaluate and interpret qualitative and quantitative data. Formulate and test concepts and hypotheses. Make informed judgments on complex issues, e.g. interpret a diversity of multi-factors affecting the quality, time and cost of construction projects and management of construction organisations. Learning Outcomes: Transferable Skills On the completion of this course successful students will Teaching/Learning Methods and Methods of Assessment be able to: Make effective use of both oral and written skills and be able to communicate effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Competent in using Information Technology and computer skills e.g. Microsoft Project and Primavera software; BIM related software; SSPS and other research methods software. Strategies MSc/PGDip/PGCert Students transferable skills are developed through presentations exercises, student and tutor-led discussions, preparation for oral and written presentations, group-working exercises and the extended individual project. Capacity to learn. Ability to apply transferable skills. MSc/PGDip/PGCert: The assessment of the majority of the transferable skills forms an integral part of the overall assessment of the degree pathway. Group-working and written and oral communication skills are assessed directly. Practical skills in the use of Information Technology are not formally assessed, although the development of IT skills are integral of the learning and teaching process underpinning the degree and are assessed indirectly.
