3 IPS CORPORATION Solvent Cementing PVC and CPVC Plastic Pipes Cold Weather Tips Good joints can be made with Weld-On solvent cement at sub-zero temperatures. Working in freezing temperatures is never easy, but sometimes the job is necessary. If that unavoidable job includes solvent cementing plastic pipe, you can do it successfully with Weld-On solvent cements. Weld-On solvent cements have excellent cold weather stability for virtually all practical applications. Our cements are formulated to have well-balanced drying characteristics and to have good stability in sub-freezing temperatures. In addition to our regular and low VOC cements, Weld-On offers a solvent cement specially formulated for cold weather applications. See the Weld-On 727 Hot R Cold product bulletin. By following our standard instructions and using a little extra care and patience, successful solvent cemented joints can be made at temperatures as low as -15ºF (-26ºC). In cold weather, solvent cements penetrate and soften the surfaces of plastic pipe and fittings more slowly than in warm weather. The plastic is also more resistant to solvent attack. Therefore, it is very important to pre-soften surfaces with an aggressive primer. A longer cure time is necessary due to a slower evaporation rate in cold weather. Tips to follow when solvent cementing in cold weather 1. Prefabricate as much of the system as possible in a heated work area. 2. Store bulk quantities of primer & cement in a warm location above 40 F (4ºC) when not in use and make sure they remain fluid. We recommend the use of smaller containers to transport the fluid products to the joint assembly work-site. 3. If Weld-On solvent cement is stored at a very cold temperature and gels, it can be reconstituted by bringing it into a warm environment (60 F - 90 F / 15ºC - 32ºC ) and allowing it to sit for 24 hours. Do not try to artificially heat it in order to speed up the process. Before use, vigorously shake the solvent cement. 4. Take special care to remove moisture including ice and snow from the surfaces to be joined,especially from the ends of the pipe as well as fittings and valve sockets. 5. Ensure that the pipe,fittings,and valves are at the same temperature prior to priming and solvent cementing. 6. Use Weld-On P-70 Primer to soften the joining surfaces before applying the solvent cement. More than one application may be necessary. Surfaces are sufficiently primed when scraping a blade on the treated part will result in the effortless removal of some plastic material. 7. Allow a longer cure period before the system is pressure tested. A heat blanket may be used to speed up the set and cure times. 8. Read and follow all of our directions carefully before installation. 4 Corzan Piping Systems Offers Confidence in Complex Hospital Application When one of Florida s largest hospitals needed to refit its highcapacity laundry facility with new piping, it chose a Lubrizol CPVC solution In a facility that operates 24 hours per day, performing a complicated plumbing job can be tricky. When a major hospital in Tallahassee, Fla., needed a plumbing solution inside its laundry facility due to corrosion issues affecting its copper piping system, Keith McNeill, of McNeill Plumbing Contractor, Inc., needed a solution that would hold up to the wear and tear of constant use. A lot of the wear and tear is predominantly the amount of use and the amount of water that is running through the pipes every day, McNeill said. The volume and temperature of the water used in a laundry facility, in particular, can be extremely harsh on piping the abrasiveness of the water is enhanced by the amount of chemicals used, including chloramines, a disinfectant that can act as a damaging oxidizer to copper piping. The hospital runs more than a million gallons per month just through that laundry facility, McNeill said. McNeill, who recently turned over the ownership of the company to his son, Chase, understood that the selection of the right piping material for this project had implications not only for the performance of the building but also for reputation of his family business. With all of this on the line, Keith chose to use Corzan Piping Systems from Lubrizol CPVC because of the product s unique features and benefits that aligned well with the needs of the laundry. We like the product, McNeill said. We felt like it would hold up long-term, and we liked the application. A Corzan piping solution has advantages over copper piping. Copper corrodes, which can often result in contractors having to return to the job site to repair pinhole leaks and as McNeill noted, this is especially true in environments that move millions of gallons of water. Corzan piping has a larger internal diameter than other plastic piping that McNeill considered for the job, which allows for a higher flow rate. This was a considerable new advantage for the laundry facility application, where the original copper piping was undersized for its current use purchasing copper pipe with the proper diameter was a significant cost increase for the project. The laundry piping job also needed to meet certain requirements. McNeill said Corzan piping s low coefficient of thermal conductivity compared to copper made the product a good match for the job, as the pipes would see water temperatures upwards of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. As well, high pressure played a role, reaching 100 psi. Add to these factors that the final tie-in needed to be completed in about 10 hours overnight on a Saturday the only downtime the laundry facility experiences in a given week and McNeill had his work cut out for him. During the job, McNeill utilized Corzan Flange Kits for the process. The kits feature a steel backer plate that is installed with the Corzan piping flange with high strength bolts, and advanced gaskets that seal with 75% less surface contact and lower seating stress than competitive products. This enabled McNeill to apply more torque on the bolts without concerns of damaging the CPVC flange, while maintaining full system pressure through the flange connection. McNeill also gained confidence from the gasket because it is certified to meet NSF-61 standard for potable water, as well as the FBC System Compatible Program, indicating it is formulated to be used with Corzan CPVC. 5 Rob Zagorski: Delivering MORE INSIDE and Outpacing the Rest As his tenure with Lubrizol CPVC approaches the decade mark, North America/Western Regional Manager Rob Zagorski says he s built something he s proud of: an experienced team of experts that always delivers on Lubrizol CPVC s promise to its customers. We re getting stronger and stronger every day, and our customers are seeing exactly what we bring to the table, Rob says of his and his team s continuing efforts to bring real value to the customers they serve throughout the Western portion of the United States. Anyone can trick somebody into an order, but that s not good business it needs to be a partnership. With decades of experience in the plumbing industry, Rob came to Lubrizol CPVC in 2004, having spent the prior 20 years of his career in various roles, forging deep-rooted relationships throughout the region that continue to serve him today. Rob s ties in California served him particularly well in his efforts to help see CPVC gain regulatory approval and industry acceptance in the state. In the better part of a 20-year battle, straddling his tenure at Lubrizol and his former jobs, he said seeing CPVC approval in California was one of his goals. After working to see the product accepted in certain pockets of the state, including Los Angeles, Rob said the product took off state-wide. Now we see it everywhere, he says.
