Person 27 Basic Information 1. Name David Ramnerö 2. address: 3. Exchange university UTAS 4. City Hobart 5. Country Australia 6. First semester of your exchange Swedish spring semester (VT) 7. Academic year 2013/ What subject area/s did you study during your exchange? Physics, Maths, Programming, Art, Science 9. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Engineering Physics 11. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 2,5 Studies 12. Tell us about your studies on your exchange. If you are stuck for ideas you can for exemple write about: The differences between Uppsala University and the exchange. What were the teachers like? What courses would you recommend (or not) for future exchange students? The relationship between teachers and students. The academic level and quality of your courses. Access to computers. Examinations... In general I feel like the courses promoted a method of learning that worked better for me. The lectures were all 1 hour rather than 2 hours so the days become more varied, and in general I felt that the lecturers were more engaged. There was often mandatory work throughout the semester that was relevant to the exam, and the exam in general made up a smaller part of the total mark. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. I arrived 2 hours before orientation started because of confusion and bad communication. I didn t have a place to live because the counselor at the International Office here at UU recommended me to find a place after arriving there. Out of sheer luck I was able to get the 2nd last room at on-campus accommodation. Due to this I however got in to the welcome event of the college late and the organizers, who were older students, didn t handle that very well, and my involvement in the college-life suffered as a result. I however still managed to make friends quite early on and eventually had a good time. Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 77 av 396
Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in a dorm type of accommodation referred to as a college, specifically John Fisher College. It houses a few hundred students and you have your own (very small) room with a shared bathrooms and kitchenettes on each floor. There is one shared kitchen with no ovens and 4 stoves for 200 people to share, and there is a cafeteria with cheap food of varying quality. There are common rooms that usually are dominated by the older students, who foster a culture of elitism with traditions that usually come down to humiliating new students. This is intended to be taken as a joke or whatever, but for me it was hard to think it is fun when the people who were supposedly welcoming you to the college, and who never talked to me and actually introduced me to the place (with a few exceptions), when these people screamed insults at you, slapped you in the face and squirted shitty white wine on you it didn t feel very humorous to me. At the on-campus accommodation you are not allowed to make much noise, or even stand around talking in the corridors and overseers employed by the accommodation patrol around and enforce this. The positive things about the accommodation largely spring from things that has little to do with the actual accommodation administration: the view is good, the location is good (close to school) and I met a lot of great friends, who similarly to me didn t dig the frat culture of the college. All in all, considering that it cost about 5000 kr per month with ridiculous added fees popping up here and there I d say on-campus accommodation at UTAS is a rip-off. Admittedly housing is expensive in Hobart in general, but that price for that tiny room with shared bathrooms, shitty kitchen and guards patrolling your corridor is ridiculous, Australians I talked to thought so as well. The one thing that kind of makes up for all of this though is -granted that you make some friends- that it is really cool to have a crowd of friends that you basically live with and spend all of your time with. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? I talked extensively about this above. CSN was adequate as they, without me actually asking for it, gave me a much larger loan than I would usually get. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? I got caught up in the college-business and did not really attend any event targeted at exchange students. During my free time I hung out with my friends and did my own thing. We went to some college events, some of which were actually very fun, and a few University events but they were mostly pretty lackluster. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. My exchange experience was largely about me handling my own life in a far-away country, meeting friends and going through things with them, only to leave it all and come back here. I had a great time, but that Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 78 av 396
was largely due to my own and my friends initiatives. UTAS has well layed out courses and a really impressive art-school, but is lacking in the student-life aspect. Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by to individual students requesting it. Do you also approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University s website? Yes 19. Do you have any photos you would like to upload and include in your exchange report? Please tell us a little bit about the picture/s Publishing of pictures - Thank you for submitting your exchange report! Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 79 av 396
Person 6 Basic Information 1. Name Ruben Henriksson 2. address: rubenhenriksson@live.se 3. Exchange university University of Tasmania (UTAS) 4. City Stockholm 5. Country Sverige 6. First semester of your exchange Swedish autumn semester (HT) 7. Academic year 2014/ What subject area/s did you study during your exchange? Economics, Politics 9. Level of studies at the exchange university Undergraduate 10. What are you studying at Uppsala University? Politicies Kandidat programmet 11. How many years of study had you completed before going on exchange? 2 years Studies 12. Overall I found the standard of the teachers to be very high at UTAS. Lecturers were therefore highly engaging and interesting. A difference between my regular studies at Uppsala and UTAS is that at UTAS you study 4 courses parallell to eachother, rather than one at the time as I ve done previously in Uppsala. I found this a bit annoying but I guess you got used to it eventually. I would like to recommend the course global political ecology which is without a doubt the most thought provoking unit I have had the fortune to study. In general units regarding the environment holds a very high standard. Orientation and reception 13. Tell us about how it was to arrive and settle in. The university organised a week of introductions. It was mostly information given to us in lecture form. While this was good to know the introduction to the university could have been a lot more fun then it was. They do not have anything you could compare to a inspark (in lack of a more appropriate word), and this is a big downside. Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 15 av 396
Accommodation 14. Describe your accommodation. What type of accommodation did you have, where you satisfied? Do you have any tips for future students? I lived in a dorm like building called Christ College which was recommended from the University. I would not recommend staying there since it is both expensive and pretty low standard. Shared showers and bathrooms and only one big kitchen in a seperat building. I would recommend either the University appartmens which resembles the corridors in Uppsala or living in a shared house somewhere in Hobart. Your finances 15. Describe the cost of living. Did you find CSN adequate? How was the rent in comparison to your rent in Uppsala? Did you undertake part-time work in addition to your studies? The rent for the University provided accomodations is very high and I strongly recommend finding a cheaper room in a shared house. Other than that the living costs are more or less the same as in Sweden. Except for the wine, which is much cheaper. I did not undertake any part-time job. Free time 16. What did you do in your free time? Did the university arrange any special activities? Where there any activities specifically for exchange students? Were you happy with what was on offer? There is an exchange club which organises activities. I did not participate in this to any greater extend but you could. Instead I participated in the sport activites organised by Christ College where I lived. There is a range of clubs to take part in aswell with everything from Kendo clubs to Rafting. I highly recommend becoming a member of the bushwalking club which is essentialy THE club to join as an exchange student. Your exchange on the whole 17. Please sum up your exchange experience. If you have any other tips for future exchange students, or any other comments feel free to include them here. Tasmania is a very speciell place. It is not easy going but it is worth it if you are ready for a challenge. Hobart as a town is pretty slow, especially compared to Uppsala and if partying is your main goal I can t recommend Hobart. But if you love nature and wanna studie the environment there is no place better then Tasmania. Marvelous nature and engaging teachers makes sure you will never forget your semester abroad. Approval 18. Your report will be available for future exchange students in printed form at the International Office and will be sent by to individual students requesting it. Do you also approve the publishing of your exchange report on Uppsala University s website? Yes 19. Do you have any photos you would like to upload and include in your exchange report? Please tell us a little bit about the picture/s. One example of what Tasmania looks like. Sundown at Cape Raoul. Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 16 av 396
21. Publishing of pictures I approve of my pictures being published and used in Uppsala University s marketing of international exchanges Thank you for submitting your exchange report! Vetenskapsområdet för medicin och farmaci, Uppsala universitet Sida 17 av 396
