JA3 Výběrová angličtina pro přírodovědce Anketa podzim 214 Otázka Název otázky Možnosti Odpovědi Balance of language and science Balance of language and science From my point of view, balance and science was perfectly balanced :) I don't suppose we can do more science, considering wide variety of fields of study. But I was surprised that nobody mentioned the Sketch Engine before. It proved to be a useful tool. I think that language and science sections were quite pretty balanced in this course. I think the lessons were pretty balanced, even though by the end, the language part was slowly getting less and less space. But I don't think of it as a bad thing, as most people attending the course speak good English. perfectly balanced during whole term very useful phrases and words
1 5 Topic: Brno Reservoir and Cyanobacteria Topic: Brno Reservoir and Cyanobacteria I really liked the topic, because I live near the Brno Reservoir, so it's quite close to me. But I just think that sometimes the topic was more just cyanobacteria and it actually could be about any kind of cyanobacteria anywhere. I would have personally liked making the connection to Brno more significant. broad theme It is practically open to all fields. At first there was too much of biology and cyanobacteria, but then, as a conference was approaching, I started to like this topic. Despite the fact that I wasn't interested in this topic at the beginning of the course, it caught me during the semestr. However I suppose that the theme 'Brno Reservoir and Cyanobacteria' has been already exhausted after 3 semesters of this course. Even if this topic wasn't exactly my cup of tea, I liked every Friday e spent together :)
1 12 Work in mixed teams Work in mixed teams I enjoy it very much and knew a lot of new people It was perfectly fine. I had no problems whatsoever working with anyone and I really enjoyed the fact that we didn't simply separate ourselves to permanent little groups or something like that. This was really excellent and I enjoyed working in mixed teams, it isn't so well organized in other courses. To be honest I has expected more from it. Teams were nearly always same, I would appreciate more mixing and changing number of members in groups (some problem is better to solve in groups of 4, some in pairs, for something is more interesting to split whole class in half). We created very well mixed and balanced teams :)
1 6 Interdisciplinarity Interdisciplinarity Always comprehensible for everyone :) I has really loved to listen and study about stuff from another scientific fields in the course. Only thing I has missed was deeper interdisciplinary cooperation. For example explanation of photosynthesis by biologist/chemist (teachers or even students) in each group and solving related problem in groups. Maybe the topics should be more balanced and there should be more from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and so on, and a little less from Biology. The only problem I had with interdisciplinarity is that even though mathematics did get it's space, it was more general and less connected to the Brno Reservoir. But then I suppose that connecting those two is no easy task, so I at least appreciate the effort.
1 11 Materials, handouts Materials, handouts Nice and handy :) Nice pictures, interesting texts and exercises - I has been totally satisfied with that. They were very well structured and with exactly the right amount of information and tasks, I would say. very good sources
1 11 Presentations Again, they were very good. I really appreciate the effort all the teachers put into them and it was really a pleasure listening to them. Presentations Almost every presentation was really professional and nicely prepared, but sometimes there were only too information in my opinion. Great, we've learned a lot! I liked to improvise during short presentations, when we had to tell the story in 1 minute and so on... There were small differences between teachers (level of presenting) but I always liked the way the topic was explained :) Whose? Ours or our teachers' =) Teachers - acceptable; some students could use some guidance. colourful, nice,...
Abstract writing 1 3 Abstract writing I think we got enough information as to how to write our abstracts and I really liked that James tended to our abstracts separately. It just simply wasn't too exciting, no offense. It helps me very lot because of my bachelor these Most useful. That was very tiresome and tedious work. It surprised me a lot that we had to do abstract before the project itself. For me it would better to start the project, then write the abstract and after all finish the project. Very useful! Very veered handy :)
1 Corpus searching tool (Sketch engine) Cool :) Corpus searching tool (Sketch engine) Great software, I'm really glad to James for showing it! I think it is useful and that I will use that tool in future a lot. I was surprised that nobody mentioned it before. It will take me a while to start using it. James explained everything really well and I found the Corpus searching tool to be a very interesting thing. I am definitely glad that I managed to get access to it. not so imoportant I think Conference organisation
1 Conference organisation Conference organisation Conference was prepared in very professional way. I'm not aware of any major problems. As far as I know everybody did his/her job and we prepared everything on time. There's not much to complain about, really. Once again, though, it was not THAT much fun to do. super super super
1 11 Final conference Despite my expactations it was interesting, most of speakers were natural and it gave me many experience for my further studies Ecology from the air (TED lecture) Final conference I enjoyed it :-) I enjoyed the conference very much :) From the beginning to the end! I like it very much. I really enjoyed presentations themself and especially performance of our chairs - that was amazing! What I really endured was early morning awaking - no more :)! I was little afraid, that it would be bad, but to be honest it was the best part of the seminar. It was well organized and generally very pleasant. I wouldn't mind some of the presentations being a little bit shorter, but that's of course not a fault of the teachers. I can say only the best about it. Very nice experience. But is it really necessary to start at 8 o'clock? ;-)
All of you were great! Thx. Great course, I was very surprised by its brilliant organisation. It was a real "school by play" and I enjoyed every class. I enjoyed the course, it was fun and learning in one. Teachers were very nice. I was very satisfied with cooperation and friendly atmosphere in this course. Overall course evaluation :-) I will just simply recommend this course to all my friends! Hopefully will continue:) One of the most favourite subject Perfect language and scientific experience, I have no regrets about registration of this course. Among other things it showed me where were my weaknesses and how can I work on them. Thank you for it. Personally, I consider this course very beneficial. The course seemed really good and interesting to me. I definitely enjoyed it from the very first lesson and I liked how the teachers managed to get the ratio of actual facts, knowledge and fun just right. No one was too serious about it, but it also wasn't just useless rainbows and butterflies.
... I would just say that some of the deadlines were a little bit strange. I would have expected them to be on, say, Thursday midnight, but then I guess you had your reasons for making them like they were. Sometimes I didn't know the deadlines of homeworks, sometimes it was confusing when someone asked about homework from 3 weeks ago. :-( Sometimes it took too much time to manage all the task and homeworks given. Sometimes it was quite difficult to do everything on time, especially final project and presentation. It required more than few hours each week. There was not enough time to discuss the presentations during the rehearsal lesson. I suggest to add one more rehearsal lesson to see an improvement. Students will also be less nervous during the final conference. no bad experiences
I have already mentioned some tips above. I think it is time to think about different topic. The Brno Reservoir has been already done twice. It is only matter of time, when it will become boring for teachers. Recommendations I would recommmend this course to students who do have much spare time in their schedules. Just keep up the good job! Thank you! Students should be provided with more personal guidance to hone their presenting skills. It seems that just providing them with some materials on how to do it right, is not enough. only the start of the lesson was too early :)
Definitely! It was surely a whole lot more interesting than, for example, the English for Chemists course that we are normally offered and I am sure that every student of any science with a reasonable level of English would appreciate it just as much as I did! Should this course be incorporated into the faculty optional curriculum? Definitely!!!! Definitely. Of course, I definitely agree with it! Sure:-) Yes Yes, it is interesting course and students can learn more there than in normal courses of English at the faculty. yes yes, I think so
