Make your way to the Peacock Theatre for registration. There may be some queuing on entry to the Theatre, which we apologise for in advance. The queues usually move very quickly. Please do not arrive before your chosen registration time as you will not be admitted early. 10 LSE Library REFRESHMENTS LSE-UCT July School Cape Town, South Africa 30 June 11 July 2014 The Library of the School is the largest in Europe devoted exclusively to the social sciences. Founded in 1896, a year after the School, it is also known as the British Library of Political and Economic Science and provides a specialist national and international research collection. In 2001, architects Foster and Partners redeveloped the Lionel Robbins Building, which houses the Library, into a modern, energy efficient and visually stunning space. The Library collects material on a worldwide basis, in all major European languages. The extensive collections range from a European Documentation Centre to 90,000 historical pamphlets, with over 95 per cent of Library stock available on open access. 50 kilometres of shelving enough to stretch the length of the Channel Tunnel accommodate over four million printed items including 31,000 past and present journal titles. The library subscribes to approximately 20,000 e-journals, as part of its electronic information provision. All collections held at LSE in the Library have been recognised for their outstanding national and international importance and awarded Designation status by the Museums Libraries and Archives Council. To enter the Library during the Open Evening, please ask at the Library reception desk where staff will be happy to provide access through the turnstiles. If you have any queries, please ask at the Help Desk on the first floor or any other Library service point, alternatively visit lse.ac.uk/library LSE is well served by catering outlets both within the School and in the local area. When you arrive you will be given complimentary tea and coffee in the Peacock Theatre. During the evening, please feel free to try one of the LSE catering outlets listed below. Fourth Floor Restaurant 9am-7pm Old Building The Fourth Floor restaurant is a lively place to get a hot or cold meal. There is a wide choice of food available, at reasonable prices and the diverse selection gives a real flavour of the School. Fourth Floor Café Bar 11am-7pm Old Building The café bar is a great place to relax with a good coffee or drink and enjoy our range of bar snacks. Plaza Café 9am-9pm John Watkins Plaza Located outside the Library, the Plaza Café offers a selection of sandwiches, hot and cold snacks and drinks. LSE Garrick 8am-7pm Houghton Street/Aldwych The Garrick is an excellent coffee shop with a wide variety of snacks. Downstairs there is a restaurant facility offering a selection of cooked meals. George IV pub 12noon-11pm Portugal Street A very traditional English pub with cask conditioned ales, beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, good bar snacks, light meals and coffee. This exciting intensive academic programme offers students and professionals the opportunity to study important social science issues relevant to Africa today, taught by world-leading faculty from LSE and UCT in the beautiful, cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. The School is easily accessible by a range of public transport including Tube, rail and bus. British Rail Stations Waterloo other side of the river from the Strand over Waterloo Bridge. Trains to and from the south coast and south west of England. Approximately a 15 minute walk to the Peacock Theatre. Charing Cross on the Strand at the Trafalgar Square end. Trains mainly to south east London and into Kent. Approximately a 12 minute walk to the Peacock Theatre. Blackfriars on the Embankment near Blackfriars Bridge. Trains mainly to south London and south east England but also the First Capital Connect line through north London. Approximately 15 minutes walk to the Peacock Theatre. Euston on Euston Road and Eversholt Street. Euston connects London with Hertfordshire, the Midlands, northern England and Scotland. Take the 59, 68 or 91 bus down to the Aldwych for LSE. Kings Cross/St Pancras International on Euston Road, close to King s Cross mainline station. Take the Piccadilly Line from King s Cross to Holborn, from where it is a five minute walk (see Holborn above). Serves the Eurostar and trains to the Midlands. Buses Buses that stop on or near the Aldwych are numbers: 1, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, 26, 59, 68, X68, 76, 87, 91, 139, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 243, 341, 388, 521 and RV1. Each bus stop should show which buses stop there and their frequency. On the front of the bus the final destination will be given. It may also show the names of the main stops on its route.
