8 product information fragrance Fragrance oils come in two forms: synthetic and natural. Natural oils, or essential oils are drawn from plants, flowers and trees whereas synthetic oils are man made and are formulated based on their natural counterpart. When it comes to natural and synthetic oils, both have benefits to consider. For natural oils the upside is the seeming effects they have on your well-being. On the other hand, synthetic oils can be formulated to create an infinite number of fragrances giving the customer a much bigger selection and these oils cost significantly less than natural oils. Salt City Candle Co. works closely with several fragrance houses to formulate unique fragrances that use both synthetic and natural oils. This way we can achieve our goal of providing variety and affordability at the same time. waxes Candles are generally composed of paraffin wax, beeswax, soy wax or a blend of these. Beeswax and some harder blends of paraffin give the candle a longer life by allowing it to burn longer. Its hard nature allows it to be molded or formed easily and will pull away cleanly from containers, reducing or eliminating the possibility of a bubbling effect. Hard wax usually looks marbled or textured. However, because of its hardness, it is unable to hold a high level of fragrance oil. The result is a lighter scented candle whose fragrance rarely or never permeates the home. Also, to reduce or prevent tunneling with hard wax candles, it requires a very heavy wick in order to create enough heat to melt the wax evenly. This in turn creates a greater amount of soot and smoke. Although attractive and easier to mold, harder blends do not perform well. Paraffin wax ranges from very hard to nearly the consistency of petroleum jelly. Candles manufactured with softer paraffin blends hold high percentages of fragrance but tend to burn quickly, tunnelling down the middle, and are expensive to manufacture. Candles manufactured by Salt City Candle Co. combine the best of both types of wax. Our waxes are highly refined paraffins, both hard and soft, and a soy blend which includes an additive that helps disperse the intense fragrance as it burns. This enables our product to last a long time and hold an astounding 7 10% of fragrance. wicks Lead core wicks have been banned in the United States and are nearly impossible to find unless the candle is manufactured internationally. Salt City Candle Co. has never used lead core wicks. Cotton wicks are popularly believed to be the cleanest burning wick available. However, cotton wicks tend to create more smoke than metal core wicks due to the greater amount of plant fibers that are burned. Salt City Candle Co. has tested various wick types to find the best match for our wax blend. Heavy wicks will cause the candle to burn more rapidly and create greater amounts of soot and smoke as it burns. Lighter wicks will cause the candle to tunnel and burn itself out because it is unable to heat the wax evenly. Salt City Candle Co. has selected a zinc core wick that produces minimal levels of soot and smoke, and burns evenly from top to bottom, if trimmed properly. The secret to our success is the ability to create a beautiful product which holds maximum levels of fragrance, and lasts longer than most candles on the market today. glass The vast majority of our glass is made domestically in the U.S.A. We take great pride in the fact that our glass has been personally designed, giving our products a distinctive look. The glass itself has been annealed so that it can withstand high temperatures. However, we have always stated that the glass can break under extreme heat caused by direct contact with the flame. The candle needs to be discarded once ½ inch of wax remains in the jar. This stipulation is printed on every caution label. If a consumer ignores this and burns it dry, there is the possibility of the jar becoming too hot and cracking, or burning the surface it is on. Often times, we will bring in unique glass from around the world, such as our hand blown giant pumpkin from Italy, to offer our customers something fun and new. We are always on the look out for that! candle care To properly burn a candle, apply the following rules: 1. Always place the candle on a heat resistant surface such as a candle holder or stove. 2. The candle should always be out of the reach of children and pets, and where it cannot be accidentally bumped by anyone. 3. Do not place the candle near a drafty area like a vent or door. The flux in air can cause the wick to smoke. Also, during winter months, a sudden burst of cold air can cause the glass to crack. 4. Before lighting the candle, the wick should be trimmed to ¼" height. 5. The candle should be allowed to burn for a minimum of one hour per lighting to allow it to melt properly and avoid tunneling. Ideally, the wax should be melted to the edge of the jar each time before extinguishing. 6. After several hours of burning, a wick can form a clump known as a scent button. This should be trimmed off to avoid sooting. 7. The best way to extinguish a candle is to use one of our Wick Dippers. Dip the lit wick into the pool of wax, then pull the wick out and straighten. This extinguishes the flame instantly with no smoke. Blowing out the wick is safe, but causes smoke. Never place the lid back on the candle to extinguish the flame as this will trap the smoke back into the wax as it cools. 8. Discontinue the use of the candle when only ½" of wax remains. If used beyond this point, the bottom of the glass can become hot enough to burn surfaces or break the glass. 9. A burning candle should never be left unattended.
