2 Virtualization, centralization, mobility and multimedia: These are the four aspects characterizing the change now affecting IT infrastructures. The focus of the current solutions from Citrix is two-fold: achieving cost-effectiveness in computer centers and fl exible delivery of virtualized applications and desktops. The Citrix Ready label only applies to the Citrix Receiver for HD TM Broadcast software client, which establishes a remote connection to a Citrix environment, while the HD Ready designation refers to the additional set of features contained in the High Defi nition User Experience, which even allows high-performance use of professional CAD applications with thin clients. System-on-Chip: HD Ready SoC With the HD Ready SoC label, thin client manufacturers verify that they have a hardware reference design that supports acceleration by means of HD TM technology. As part of the Citrix System-on-Chip (SoC) initiative, IGEL brought the fi rst SoC multiprotocol and multimedia thin client to market. This model, the IGEL UD2-L MultiMedia, is based on an ARM architecture. Its integrated digital signal processor (DSP) allows a level of video performance that until now had only been achieved by the top models in the industry. In addition, all thin clients in the IGEL Universal Desktop series with the Advanced feature set are certifi ed as HD Ready. All models are also dualview/multiviewcapable right from the factory. Unifi ed Communications and More In order to be able to offer users the benefi ts of unifi ed communications with optimum video performance, HD-certifi ed IGEL thin clients also support the HD Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync. In addition, the high graphics performance offered by IGEL Universal Desktops helps to reduce the load on the server and optimize use of bandwidth by performing some of the video-related processing directly on the local device. Beyond that, IGEL s HD Ready thin clients support a wide range of peripherals, from local printers and scanners to digital dictation devices. With a WLAN option along with parallel and serial ports, IGEL devices can also accommodate unusual user scenarios. To a certain extent, IGEL thin clients even permit local installation of special drivers, tools and software clients. Standardization and Safeguarded Investment The IGEL appliance mode for Citrix endesktop combines the perfect HD TM user experience with a PC-identical logon procedure. This means that immediately after switching on the device, the user sees the logon screen for the virtual Windows desktop without having any contact with the local operating system on the thin client itself. The high-quality design and rugged construction of IGEL devices ensure long service lives, safeguarding the investment in them. In addition, for almost all of its models IGEL offers a free extension of its standard hardware warranty for a total coverage period of fi ve years. As part of its policy of continuous software development, IGEL also guarantees that it will provide updates for thin client operating systems not only while a device is currently available but also for three years after its discontinuation. Source: Date: 05/2013 The Best Remote Management In keeping with the easy management of the Citrix environment, the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) management software that comes standard with IGEL thin clients also allows easy assignment and access confi guration of Citrix applications and virtual desktops. For instance, virtual desktops can be assigned to a given department by means of various group profi les, while another department only obtains access to published applications. Similarly, the IGEL appliance mode for Citrix endesktop TM can be easily enabled with just a mouse click. Moreover, the IGEL UMS provides a well-designed, comprehensive system for update and asset management. Firmware updates are provided in a fail-safe, scheduled manner that conserves resources and bandwidth. For example, updating Citrix Receiver in Windows Embedded does not require distribution of a complete fi rmware image but only the specifi c software that is actually required (partial update). 5 Security: Secure End-User Devices In addition to the security features and solutions offered by Citrix, IGEL provides its customers with its own set of comprehensive security features such as support for different virtual private networks (VPN) and smartcard authentication, each of which is highly integrated. For example, all IGEL models allow ICA sessions over a VPN, such as by means of L2PT, Cisco Secure Client and NCP Secure Client. Support for Citrix Netscaler Gateway, previously known as Secure Access Gateway, is also a standard feature. Effi cient authentication is possible by means of the optional IGEL smartcard that is either read by a space-saving onboard reader or by one of the many supported external readers. Furthermore, IGEL thin clients also support many other smartcard or USB token-based authentication solutions. To protect sensitive data, USB ports must fi rst be enabled by the system administrator. Thin client management is always encrypted and certifi cate-based. To compensate for these costs, some Citrix customers opt to not acquire new thin client hardware immediately but instead to simply update their existing PCs or thin clients at the logical level and to continue to use them temporarily. The solution here is IGEL Universal Desktop Converter (UDC) software, which transfers IGEL Linux fi rmware to the devices as the sole operating system, making them de facto IGEL thin clients and thus enabling the use of the same Citrix features as with current, standard IGEL thin clients. An additional benefi t is the reduction of the management workload by up to 70 percent in the case of PC conversions. The reason: All PCs converted by means of IGEL UDC software can be remotely managed and updated effi ciently by means of the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), which comes free with IGEL devices. In view of the signifi cantly lower operating and management costs, the already rather low migration costs are recovered even faster as a result. Summary With Citrix and IGEL, companies and government agencies can readily adapt to current and future challenges with great fl exibility, standardize their IT as needed and lower their overall costs. In the study Thin Clients 2011 Ecological and economic aspects of virtual desktops, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) investigated a real installation with Citrix enapp and Citrix endesktop with regard to its power consumption and global warming potential over the entire lifecycle. The result: Over a service life of three years, the global warming potential (GWP) is reduced by up to 63 percent compared to a control scenario with conventional workstation PCs including server power consumption. In fact, the power consumption in the operating phase is reduced by up to 77 percent, which means an annual saving of almost 3,600 euros for every 100 thin clients (depending on the cost of electric power, which is increasing). 6/8
