2 Contact Details Cynara Davies Education Officer Tel: Louise Rigglesford Community Partnerships Manager Tel: ext Katrina Burton Head of Learning Tel: Tel: Lucy Greenfield Community Programme Manager Tel: or Who We Are Chichester Cultural Learning Partnership (CCLP) is formed of six organisations in and around the Chichester District - Chichester Cathedral, Chichester Festival Theatre, Fishbourne Roman Palace, The Novium Museum, Pallant House Gallery, and Weald & Downland Open Air Museum - all of whom are committed to delivering dementia-friendly cultural activities. Each organisation has a trained Dementia Champion who is able to deliver Dementia Friends awareness sessions; an Alzheimer s Society initiative to raise awareness of how we can all support people living with dementia. CCLP was formed in 2014, sharing best practice between organisations working with a wide range of people in the local community. One of the main shared interests was to include activities for people living with dementia into each organisation s programme of work. Over the course of 8 weeks in 2015, the partnership organised the first Living Well with Dementia Festival, offering a range of events for people living with dementia, their friends and families. These included guided tours, music and dance workshops, art workshops and singing sessions. Following two successful years of delivering the festival in Chichester, the organisations in CCLP aim to provide a year-round programme of dementiafriendly events and activities. In this booklet, you will find information about each individual organisation s planned activity for the coming year, as well as contact details should you want to find out more. Adult Learning Team Tel: courses@wealddown.co.uk

3 Chichester Cathedral is a centre of prayer, worship and debate with visitors and worshippers coming from all over the world. Chichester Cathedral welcomes everybody - a place of inspiration and reflection for 900 years. We deliver a varied programme of learning opportunities for all ages throughout the year, including workshops, special events and tours. Chichester Cathedral is committed to becoming a dementia-friendly venue. We are in the process of rolling out Dementia Friends training to our staff and volunteers. Throughout the year you can join one of our specially trained guides for a tour of the Cathedral which will introduce you to some of the highlights of this ancient building. Enjoy experiencing this beautiful place and find out about some of the Cathedral s artistic treasures including the colourful Chagall window. This tour has been designed to be dementia-friendly and participants will have the chance to handle objects and textiles and listen to music. Previous participants on these tours have commented: Very interesting and delightful change for my residents, who really enjoyed the guided tour and would like a second visit. We loved it. I was surprised my Mum stayed for the whole thing. I thought she would get tired but she enjoyed the surroundings and the stimulation. The multi-sensory aspect was great. For the last two years we have been involved in the Living Well with Dementia Festival and during the 2016 event we hosted a tea dance, music workshops led by Open Strings and a textiles workshop with a local textile artist, in addition to running the guided tours. We hope to source funding to enable similar special events to run again in the future. Participants said of the music workshop: Relaxing, friendly and happy. As a carer I really enjoyed the music, singing and playing the instruments. I would love to do it again. To find out about booking our dementia-friendly guided tours or about other learning events, please contact Cynara Davies, Education Officer. Dementia-friendly tours are delivered by staff and volunteers who have been trained in dementia awareness. 3 per person including refreshments. Tel: educationofficer@chichestercathedral.org.uk

4 Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the UK s flagship theatres with an international reputation for producing work of the highest quality, ranging from large-scale musicals to distinguished dramas. Alongside our productions, we run a much-valued programme of learning and participation work. Through classes in writing, dance, and drama for a variety of ages we have built and strengthened connections within the community, and are committed to delivering a yearround programme of dementia-friendly activities. As of summer 2016, all of our Box Office and Front of House staff have attended Dementia Friends information events. Previous dementia-friendly activities have included seated dance sessions, weekly singing groups, backstage tours of CFT as well as public Dementia Friends information sessions. Here s what some of our previous participants have said about our dementia-friendly sessions: It was great, we could go with the flow, wriggle and smile. Use up some energy without being embarrassed. Each time I ve attended the event I ve had a great time. It s always so relaxing and fun and geared to people of all ages and abilities. Please see below for details about dementia-friendly activities currently planned to take place this year: Mind, Body, Sing! Fridays, 2pm pm, St Paul s Church, Chichester Enjoy the fun and health-giving properties of group singing. No auditions and no reading of music and even if you think you cannot hold a note or keep a rhythm, you are definitely welcome. Everyone is musical and there are no wrong notes! Please call or to enquire about term dates. 3 per person including refreshments. Spare Tyre presents The Garden November 2016, Chichester Festival Theatre Experience The Garden, an immersive performance for people with dementia and their carers, created by participatory arts company Spare Tyre. 5 Fishbourne Roman Palace prides itself on being an accessible venue that offers a friendly welcome to all. Many of the staff are Dementia Friends and the venue offers a wide range of activities suitable for those living with dementia. A visit to the site itself gives visitors the chance to find out more about the discovery of the Palace and daily life here nearly 2,000 years ago. The Roman Palace is well known for its fantastic collection of mosaics and its beautiful recreated Roman gardens. Fishbourne Roman Palace is open every day from 1 February - 15 December. Why not pop in for a visit and enjoy an object handling session, afternoon tea in the café or a multi-sensory stroll through the Roman herb garden? From September 2016 we will be running a programme of Wednesday afternoon Creative Conversations specifically for those living with dementia and their families. Find out a bit more about Roman life, try a new practical skill and enjoy a chat over tea and coffee in a comfortable environment. The first session is on Wednesday 14 September from 2.45pm - 4pm and will give participants a chance to explore Roman mosaics and to make a mini mosaic to take away. The sessions are on the second Wednesday of each month, except in January and August, all from 2.45pm - 4pm. 6 The Novium Museum tells the story of the history of the Chichester District through exhibitions, events and activities. We provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn more about the heritage of the city and engage with some of the 500,000 artefacts we care for. We endeavour to provide new opportunities for those people living with dementia, as well as their carers, to discover more about our collections and the development of Chichester over time by meeting our staff, sharing their stories and getting hands-on with some objects from our collection. The museum runs specialised dementia-friendly sessions throughout the year, all of which are led by fully trained staff who have extensive experience in leading activities for people with dementia. The events we attended have been very good and stimulating for my husband. He has enjoyed the opportunity to visit new places, meet new people and try out new ideas. I ve had a really lovely time; I shall come back again hopefully. We ve been made to feel very welcome. It s been really nice, nice to be able to touch it s the best bit! Hands on History Tour 1pm on 24 October, 23 January, 24 April and 24 July A 45 minute informal and interactive tour of the museum. Staff will discuss some of our favourite objects and stories, and provide the opportunity to handle various artefacts. 4 per person including refreshments. As well as scheduled sessions at the museum, we can arrange bespoke sessions for care homes, support groups and other groups who are interested in the History of Chichester, the museum s collections, The Guildhall or finding out about the important work museums do. To book a place or to find out more about our Hands on History tours or other activities, please contact: Novium Learning Team Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1QH Tel: noviumlearning@chichester.gov.uk

7 Pallant House Gallery Community Programme Pallant House Gallery is situated in the centre of Chichester and houses one of the best collections of 20th Century British Art in the country. The Gallery is committed to including people living with dementia and carers in the Community Programme and general life of the gallery. There is a rolling programme of Dementia Friends sessions for staff and volunteers to attend. Many facilitators and staff involved in the Community Programme have completed dementia awareness training provided by the Alzheimer s Society and Arts 4 Dementia. The Community Programme provides long term creative opportunities that are tailored to people s different interests and needs. We have developed a number of activities that are dementia-friendly where people living with dementia and carers can join other members of the Community Programme to share and enjoy their interests in art and creativity. Art Views - Thursday afternoons monthly, 1.30pm 3.30pm A free-flowing discussion looking at artworks from the Pallant House Gallery Collection. The facilitator encourages people to take time to look at the artworks and share their personal responses. There are no wrong answers, everyone s opinion is valued. The art discussions are usually an hour followed by tea and cake. Utterly fascinating, vivid interaction between everyone. Felt very at home. Learned a lot. Meet and Make - second Tuesday each month, 10.30am pm A workshop providing opportunities for people to try out different creative techniques, meet new people and learn more about the exhibitions and collections. Time in the Studio is friendly and happy with gentle and helpful guidance. Much appreciated. Both sessions are supported by staff and volunteers who have trained in dementia awareness per person for each session including refreshments. Other Studio sessions and activities are also open to people living with dementia and carers. 8 The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum is an award-winning museum where you can discover historic buildings and the stories of the men, women and children who have lived and worked in them over a 950-year period. We have historic gardens, a working watermill and smithy, and public buildings too including a tin tabernacle church and Victorian school. It is a tactile and multi-sensory environment where people are encouraged to explore and learn through informal conversations and hands-on activities. At the Museum we strive to provide a warm welcome and a supportive environment for all visitors. A significant number of our staff and volunteers at the Museum are Dementia Friends and we have run activities for adults living with dementia and their friends and family over the last few years in a range of topics. 9 It is thought that one in three people in the Chichester district will have a form of dementia during their lifetime. The Chichester Dementia Action Alliance is a group that works within the National Dementia Alliance Framework to enable people with dementia and their carers to have a voice about what will benefit them to live well. This is achieved through integrated working across communities and services, with an emphasis on building dementia-friendly communities and raising awareness through Dementia Friends sessions. What can you do to help? Become dementia aware - be a Dementia Friend Know what dementia is, how it affects someone and what you can do to help Sign up to the Alliance as a public body, business or charity that would like to make an ongoing commitment to improving the lives of people with dementia Find information and formal training opportunities through the Alliance Share your experiences, ideas and opinions by joining the alliance focus group For more information go to chichesterinpartnership.org.uk or call
