2 Notre Dame de Chicago Parish 2 Ascension of the Lord From the desk of the Pastor... Del escritorio del Pastor... The Year of the Sacraments...one word at a time Change. We believe that in the Mass, when the priest invokes the Holy Spirit and repeats the words of Jesus, the elements of bread and wine are changed into the reality of his Body and Blood. In faith, we can affirm that this happens, but we cannot explain with any precision how it happens, as much as we might want to. The how remains a mystery. And there is another important dimension of change that calls for our close attention. Not only do the elements of bread and wine change, but we who take within ourselves the Body and Blood of the Lord are radically transformed. Jesus says, "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day." (John 6:54) The Eucharist changes us in the most radical way imaginable, from mortal beings subject to death to children of God raised up to new and eternal life. May the Eucharist continue to nourish every member of our parish community! Of many things Hopefully, our parish offices have a new temporary space! You can enter the office from the "specially marked doorway". There is also a doorbell. Our parish phone line: has been re-located to this office. Thanks for your patience during the restoration of the rectory after the fire! The renovation of our restrooms in the lower church hall is complete! Please continue paying your pledges to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. This money goes directly to the cost of the restrooms. Please consider making a special gift to the restroom project! Joy and peace, Msgr. La alegría y la paz, Monseñor Pat Where will you go when it is time for retirement? Maybe you are already in your golden years and enjoying some welldeserved relaxation. Did you plan well? Finances can be a little tighter than anticipated, and maybe that house that held up all those years now needs a little work. Life is never exactly the way we planned it or envisioned it. Life always has the tendency to take us by surprise. In terms of what comes next after this earthly life, we know there is a place prepared for those who love the Lord and heed his words. We do not know what it looks like or exactly which people we will see there, but we know it is better than anything we have experienced previously in life. This place, not defined by human perceptions of space and time, is eternal and perfect, and it is where Jesus sits at the right hand of God. The Ascension of the Lord provides for us a hope that, after whatever trials of this life we experience, there is rest in the Savior's arms. The Incarnation, God made flesh, rose from the dead and now is with the Father so that we could rise from the dead and live eternally with the Father. This is good news!

This should then show us the importance of this day in the life of the church in the world. It is no surprise that Pope Francis would choose the topic of "Communicating the family: a privileged place of encounter with the gift of love" as the theme this year. Saturday, May 23 5:00 pm - Maribel Eggleston Kate Floros Terry Hardt Sunday, May 24 8:30 am - Fe Granada Gerry Granada 10:00 am - Ellen Cruz Betty Nieves Necy Tan 12:00 pm - Victor Fernandez Ysabel Fernandez Magdalena Zavala Saturday, May 23 5:00 pm - Patrick Gallagher Sunday, May 24 8:30 am - Phil Granada 10:00 am - Ola Wilk Branas 12:00 pm - Juanita Martinez Last October we saw the Synod of Bishops meet for a week on the topic of family. In response to that synod, there is a widely cast net as the church asks for our input on many topics that effect the family. The family, whether it is a single man or woman living alone, a married couple with or without children, a community of religious men or women living in community, or the family of nations, is the place where God speaks to the people. Love is present wherever people first think of another person, before thinking of themselves. Sacrificial love, that action of wanting and working for another person, is perfectly embodied in the sacrificial love of Christ on the cross, or of parents working for the betterment of their family, instead of themselves. It is indeed an "encounter with the gift of love." May we all, this year, mark this World Communications Day as a day to pray for and work for someone other than ourselves.
