1 International Seminar: Income Distribution and Inequality Measurement UNAM Central campus, Mexico City November 15, 16, 17, 2016 (v ) Introduction: Income distribution is a key element to understand the economic and social structure and dynamics of the complete population. Measuring income distribution requires the use of reliable information sources, usually based on household surveys. Several studies have shown the need to complement these surveys, and even combine them with other sources in order to obtain more reliable information. At the moment, there is no agreement on what methodologies can provide the best possible description of income distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to contrast the different methodologies, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and find agreements on the best ways to statistically describe income distribution in a given society. General objective Discuss the existing sources and methodologies to provide the best possible description of income distribution in a given society. Specific objectives 1. Discuss the limitations of the statistical sources most commonly used to represent income distribution. 2. Identify the main sources and methodologies to obtain the best possible description of income distribution in a given society. 3. To setup the bases to find agreements and generate recommendations to build a better description of income distribution. 1
