PREFACE The Centre for Organizational Renewal and Evolution (CORE) at the Department of Management (MAN) the Aarhus School of Business (ASB), University of Aarhus, has had another successful year. The merger between the Aarhus School of Business and the University of Aarhus from 1 January, 2007 has changed things both for CORE and for ASB as a whole, however since we are now small fish in a big pond instead of the other way around. This has meant a crucial change in organizational outlook and we are already beginning to identify both new challenges and opportunities. The new challenges are mostly the result of being part of a larger entity with a smaller degree of independence, while the latter includes possibilities for intraorganizational cooperation and development, as well as access to greater financial resources. Being part of the Danish university sector also gives better exposure and visibility outside the organization. CORE has already taken advantage of a number of such opportunities for internal and external research collaboration to take part in and develop cutting-edge research projects. During its second year of operation, CORE continues to create substantial advantages for the individual researcher, for the university and for the business community at large. Professor Jan Selmer Head of Department of Management (MAN) i

INTRODUCTION One of the main aims of CORE is to produce innovative research of high quality and key relevance, both to the discipline itself and to the business community. Regarding the latter, the latest report released from the Danish Academy of Business Research, published in December 2007, discusses a recent survey of desired research topics by the Danish business sector. Four match ongoing research on organization and management at CORE. In 2007, CORE also hosted the 2007 Danish Academy of Management Conference Ledelse fra viden til handling (Management from knowledge to action). Efforts to improve our doctoral training activities include a number of doctoral workshops and seminars together with the usual ECTS-based courses. To further strengthen the internationalization of CORE activities, we have recruited five internationally recognized scholars each on a two-year contract. Four new research projects and five new PhD projects have been launched during the year. There has been a 37% increase in the total production of scientific publications from 2006 to 2007, and a 91.7% increase in peer-refereed articles alone. From the start, it was envisaged that CORE s research profile would benefit over time by the spinning off of one or more new research groups. This has not happened. Instead, CORE seems to have absorbed almost all active researchers at the Department of Management. This has, according to the Dean, resulted in the department having a too narrow profile. In autumn 2007, therefore, the Dean decided to set up an additional research centre and one or two smaller and more focussed research groups at the beginning of Hopefully, this will resolve the situation. 6 GLIMPSES OF 2007 February The Scandinavian management model in Spanish At the beginning of 2007, associate professor Christian Waldstrøm was contacted by one of his former exchange student, asking him to write a short article on the Scandinavian management model in Infoempleo Spain s leading employment site. The title of the article, in Spanish, is: El modelo de gestión escandinavo. March January Edward Elgar Publication The Handbook of Qualitative Research Methods in Entrepreneurship edited by associate professor Helle Neergaard and professor John P. Ulhøi was published in January to good reviews: an unusually solid and multifaceted book on what qualitative methods have done, are doing and will do in entrepreneurship research. Every serous entrepreneurship scholar should read it. It points at the future. Bjørn Bjerke, Malmø and Stockholm University, Sweden. I would warmly recommend this unique collection of qualitative methods of entrepreneurship research. In bringing together such a variety of experts from so many nationalities in this Handbook, our Danish colleagues are making entrepreneurship research a realistic global venture. Jan Ulijn, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. Colleague from CORE s sister department joins CORE Jørn Flohr Nielsen, Professor of Organization and Management at the School of Economics and Management, University of Aarhus, has joined CORE as an affiliated scholar. Professor Flohr Nielsen s broad research interests include organizational change, organizational aspects of web technology and service management. April US Law Associations interested in CORE s research on patents The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, The San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association, The Orange County Patent Law Association, and the Ventura County Bar Association IP Section invited associated professor John Howells to talk at the LAIPLA Spring Seminar in California. John Howells presented a paper entitled: Patents and Downstream Innovation Suppression Facts or Fiction? 2

May Both The Department of Management (MAN) and CORE, attract international applicants for every vacant position In line with overall ASB policy, MAN advertises all vacancies internationally. This has had the following results: In 2006, MAN announced three PhD fellowships and one associated professorship. On average, 60% of applicants came from abroad. In the first quarter of 2007, MAN announced two PhD fellowships, two associated professorships and one full professorship. In the first four months of 2007, 70% of applicants came from abroad. The majority of applicants come from the US and Germany, but MAN has also received applications from more faraway places such as Peru, Ethiopia and New Zealand. June Research prize to researchers Two CORE researchers, assistant professor Anne Bøllingtoft and associate professor Christian Waldstrøm have been awarded the Hede Nielsen Research Award for their outstanding research contributions and potentials. Each researcher received DKK 250,000. This award was last given to an ASB researcher over 22 years ago. July Steffen Korsgaard s paper nominated for the best paper award at the ICSB World Conference in Turku Of the 250 papers submitted, CORE PhD student Steffen Korsgaard s paper was nominated for the best paper award, together with 20 other papers. Although Steffen s paper, Playtime is over? A poststructuralist approach to entrepreneurship, did not actually win the award, the nomination itself is a major honour. The paper, together with the other selected conference papers will be published in an international journal or in an electronic ICSB publication before the next ICSB World Conference in ICSB stands for the International Council for Small Business. August Academy of Management Conference invaded by CORE researchers ASB is well represented the Academy of Management Conference in Philadelphia, USA, where seven CORE researchers present four papers and participate in two Symposia. This is the highest number of ASB and/or AU papers and symposia from a single department and/or research centre ever accepted for an Academy of Management Conference ever. The Academy of Management conferences are the most prestigious in the field of management, attracting several thousand management scholars from all around the world. This presents an ideal opportunity for networking. September Annual CORE workshop CORE s annual workshop, held on September at Ajstrup Strand discussed new research projects and other important research issues. Two of the three members of CORE s international advisory board also participated, namely professor Sten Jönsson, Gothenburg Research Institute and professor Hans Landström, University of Lund. October New research consortium CORE has become part of an interinstitutional research consortium on pervasive positioning technology (PPT). The consortium consists of partners from The Department of Computer Science/University of Aarhus, The Alexandra Institute, Aarhus School of Business/University of Aarhus, The Danish Agricultural Advisory Service, Systematic Software engineering A/S, and Terma A/S. The consortium won a contract from the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation of approx. DKK 25 million. 3

The rest of the overall budget of DKK 48 million DKK will be covered by the partners. CORE will be responsible for a subprogramme related to innovation and business models for PPT. November Workshop with colleagues from the School of Psychology, University of Exeter On November 11-12, colleagues from the School of Psychology, University of Exeter met with CORE members to discuss the results of the Danish TMTM survey (Think Manager Think Male). December Danish Academy of Management Conference on December A major event in December was the Danish Academy of Management Conference in Aarhus, arranged by CORE. The conference was attended by numerous researchers from various Danish institutions and a large number of practitioners from a wide range of Danish companies. More than 100 people participated and approx. 60 papers were presented. This was the second conference held by the academy, which was established in 2006 for the purpose of encouraging and strengthening management as a discipline from both a Danish and international perspective. This is to be achieved by stimulating research, teaching and practice on management and by encouraging the exchange of knowledge within management. The Danish Academy of Management is modelled on The Academy of Management in the US. The 2007 conference was financially supported by Roskilde University, Copenhagen Business School, and the Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University. 4

RESEARCH New research projects Bridge-building programme CORE and IDEA Midtjylland initiated a bridge-building programme from 1 January 2007 together with the new Væksthus Midtjylland which also houses the region's business service. The programme will employ a bridgebuilding officer to collaborate with consultants from the regional business service on the development of new services and guidance concepts for entrepreneurs especially those with growth potentials in the region. The aim of this part of the project is to strengthen the knowledge base of the regional business service. Thus resources will be allocated for research into the problems facing entrepreneurs wanting to exploit their businesses' growth potential. The regional development pool from the former county of Aarhus is funding the project with DKK 2 million, in collaboration with Region Midtjylland. For further information, contact Professor Poul Rind Christensen. Think Manager Think Male Think Manager - Think Male is a research project on women in leadership. The project was initiated following inquiries from a research group at the University of Exeter working on the same topic. Their research suggests that women tend to be appointed to leadership positions under very different circumstances than men. More specifically, their results suggest that women are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions with an increased risk of criticism and failure. Women's leadership positions can thus be seen as more precarious than those of men, a phenomenon they have dubbed the 'glass cliff, in extension of those other metaphors the 'glass ceiling and the 'glass elevator'. Our contribution is to replicate parts of their research in a Danish context. The project is co-sponsored by the Danish Association of Managers and Executives. Several researchers from CORE are involved in the project. For further information, contact Associate Professor Helle Neergaard Employee-Driven Innovation and onthe-job learning in Europe (EDI project) This project is based on the assumption that the workplace contains "hidden" and as yet unemployed human resources a potential embedded in individual employees as well as in their social interactions within and across organizational boundaries. It is further assumed that much of the individual and collective learning which takes place never translates into organizational learning due to uncontrolled and/or unaddressed organizational dynamics. Thus, the aim of the project is to find ways to free this "locked-in" potential of creativity and innovation. Innovation refers to the entire process from idea to commercialization and use. Employee-driven innovation differs from user-driven innovation, in that it does not restrict itself to focusing on "elite individuals" (lead users). Rather, it embraces all employees in the workplace, their learning environment, organization of the workplace and processes as well as organization culture. The project is sponsored by The Danish Agency for Science, 5

Technology and Innovation. Several researchers from CORE are involved in the project. For further information, contact Associate Professor Dorthe D. Håkonsson. Galileo project CORE is part of an inter-institutional research programme on pervasive and commercial positioning technology (PPT) related to the Galileo satellite. The programme, which is to last for 3 years, is run by a consortium involving The Department of Computer Science/University of Aarhus, The Alexandra Institute, Aarhus School of Business/University of Aarhus, The Danish Agricultural Advisory Service, Systematic Software Engineering A/S, and Terma A/S. It has an overall budget DKK 48 million of which about DKK 25 million comes from the advanced technology research grant. The rest will be covered by the partners in the research consortium. CORE is responsible for a sub-programme related to innovation, organization and business models capable of the fast commercialization of PPT. Several researchers from CORE are involved in the project. For further information, contact Professor John P. Ulhøi Globalization and participation: Interactions in the employees organizational arena (GLOPA) The term globalization has become a part of our everyday vocabulary, and is used in the sense of both a multitude of challenges, opportunities, and perhaps even threats to our current ways of living and working. There is little doubt that globalization has had - and will continue to have en impact on Danish industry at various levels. Despite increasing research into the impact of globalization on organizations, the main focus has been on issues related to economics, management and/or the organization as a whole, rather than on the individuals and groups within the companies. However, it is highly unlikely that globalization - or at least some consequences of globalization - will not significantly affect employees and their behaviour. How is globalization perceived and understood by the individual? How does this understanding of globalization shape individual and group behaviour? In Denmark, employee participation is a strong and highly valued tradition, one which has been associated with both greater worker satisfaction and motivation and improved organizational performance. Globalization may serve as a driver for major organizational change processes, in which case employee participation would be central. Notwithstanding, it is unclear how employees understanding of globalization influences participation behaviours in general, as well as in change initiatives linked to globalization. Will employees psychological and behavioural reactions to globalization ultimately affect organizational performance? The aim of the GLOPA project is to develop an understanding of how globalization influences aspects of employee participation and the way in which employees interact within organizations. GLOPA includes participants from two other departments from the University of Aarhus. Several researchers from CORE are involved in the project. For further information, contact Associate Professor Frances Jørgensen. Industrial ecology strategies as sustainability drivers in the small and medium-sized enterprise sector This project seeks to use industrial symbiosis to reduce the life-cycle impact of small and medium-sized enterprises and to increase resource productivity. While SME s are responsible for a significant part of the environmental impact of industry, they are less open to scrutiny and monitoring and lack the infrastructure to develop innovative solutions to decrease the environmental impact. The project is unique in that it uses industrial symbiosis as a gateway to industrial ecology in SME s, employing a problem solving con- 6

ceptual framework. The project is managed by Dr. A. Factor and sponsored by The Australian Research Council. For further information, contact Professor John P. Ulhøi Finished research projects Think Manager Think Male Think Manager Think Male is a research project on women in management. The project was carried out in collaboration with a research group from the University of Exeter working on the same topic. A descriptive index of 92 personality characteristics developed in the US in the 1970s was used to test whether they were associated with female managers in general, male managers in general and successful managers respectively. Investigations in the US, UK, Germany and Asia have demonstrated that a so-called Think- Manager-Think-Male phenomenon exist. The results of the survey in Denmark surprisingly confirmed that the TMTM phenomenon also exists in a democratic and equalitarian culture as Denmark as well. The project was co-sponsored by the Danish Association of Managers and Executives. The participants from CORE were Professor John P. Ulhøi, Associate Professor Henning Madsen, Associate Professor Helle Neergaard, and Associate Professor Mona Toft Madsen. 14 EDUCATION PhD programme CORE is affiliated with The Doctoral programme in Organizational and Management Education (DOME). DOME is an inter-institutional postgraduate programme offering postgraduate courses, seminars and workshops in English, both for PhD students in Denmark and for foreign students in the field of organization and management theory. This PhD programme trains scholars from business administration and related social sciences, to conduct research on human behaviour and management within complex and knowledge-intensive learning and innovative organizations. Offered jointly by five leading universities in Denmark, the programme combines training in theory and methods from sociology, psychology, innovation theory, entrepreneurship and intellectual capital on organizational phenomena. The focus of research will be either at the micro (i.e. psychological, interpersonal) or macro (i.e. sociological, organizational) level. Drawing on resources from each of the participating faculties, the programme prepares students first and foremost for careers as researchers and teachers within the educational and consulting industry, and researchers and analysts in large and complex organizations. In 2007, 10 courses and 1 Dissertation Research Workshop with Professor Charles Snow. Penn State University, USA and Professor John P. Ulhøi have been held. New PhD projects SME: From Traditional Towards Virtual Organisation PhD student Anna Holm Access to information, knowledge mobility, and organisational innovation has changed the business landscape. The firm/network reality is a dynamic one, and information technologies can leverage the move from one organisational status/structure to another. Most researchers consider a virtual Organisation (VO) and/or an organisation with a high degree of virtualisation (DV) as the most viable forms of organisation in the modern network society. Research so far reveals no concise view on how an organisation can transform itself from a traditional to a virtual one, or which process it can follow to achieve a higher DV. This suggests a need for more thorough and comprehensive research. The air of this project is therefore to systemise, test and add to existing knowledge on VO and DV through a set of theoretical and empirical studies. Ambiguity about VOs and the different perspectives of the concept "virtual" makes is difficult to investigate the VO as such, however. The research thus focuses on identifying and measuring different 10

phases of virtualisation and degree of virtualisation (DV) or virtual-ness of individual organisations. Public Sector Innovation PhD student Toke Bjerregaard Intensified international competition, shorter production cycles and relocation of the labour intensive part of the value chain to low-wage countries have emphasized the importance of firms ability to incorporate new knowledge into new products and services. The central challenge for many OECD economies is thus how to compete more on innovation than on prices. The managerial and policy implications of these developments are not restricted to the private sector, however. Changed demographic and industrial structures have thus altered the social and financial landscape of public sector production and consumption. Measures to facilitate innovation in existing public services or the development of new solutions to new problems have increasingly attracted the attention of public managers an- policy makers in recent years. Although innovation in the private sector has been the subject of numerous scientific studies, there have been far fewer empirical studies of innovation in the public sector administration. The aim of this project is to investigate the carriers of and barriers to public sector innovation. The sources of public innovation can be users, suppliers, employees and managers. The main focus of the project is on the degree of discretion given to employees for public sector entrepreneurship, and how this is influenced by the specific managerial, organizational and cultural characteristics of the public sector. The empirical base of the project will be generated through qualitative research methods. Innovation in (social) networks; from intra- to inter-organizational collaboration PhD student Carsten Bergenholtz The project incorporates two of the biggest current buzz-words: innovation and networks. Companies are more and more dependent on external resources and input in the form of other companies and / or users know how and preferences. Thus, dealing with innovation in networks is one of the biggest challenges facing businesses today. The PhD project contributes to an understanding of this issue; what kinds of network configuration strategies are effective in what kind of circumstances? The project s contribution will consist partly in developing the theory of social network analysis (SNA). SNA is often, and most successfully, carried out on intra-organizational settings, but for a number of reasons the technique is much harder to apply to inter-organizational settings. A theoretical understanding of the limitation and potential of SNA in inter-organizational settings will provide a valuable perspective on the issue of networking strategies. Successful Methods of Integrating Innovative Design PhD student Lars Hedemann The focus of this project is on radical efforts to reorganise design, and has been motivated by a great personal and professional interest in creativity. Designers as a group are naturally connected to creativity and in this project design activity will be used as a proxy for creativity. The importance of design is supported by recent research, which suggests that the organisation of design is becoming increasingly important. In contrast to much other work on creativity and innovation, this project focuses on "low tech industry", the furniture and textile industries. The research will compare new developments in Denmark with those in the UK. The organisation of knowledge production in the Danish Nano System of innovation PhD student Ana Luiza de Araújo The development of nanosciences and nanotechnology has given rise to much talk of a new scientific and technological revolution. The underlying promise is that it will promote the convergence of various fields of science and engineering, such as 11

biotechnology, applied physics, ICT and cognitive sciences. The Impact of the Internet on the Organization of Export Intermediation Activities PhD student Hanne Kragh Hanne Kragh finished her PhD project and defended her thesis in November. The title of the thesis is Implementing Internetenabled ICT in export marketing systems: Effect on activity organization. It has thus been attributed the potential to redefine the existing industries and pull the economy into a new techno-economic paradigm. Such breakthroughs in scientific and technological knowledge are not sufficient for successful innovation processes, however. These require other ways of organising the production of knowledge, since they promote radical shifts in the practices of and relationships between firms, research institutions, regulatory bodies and the government. Despite the promise, very little is known about the changes nanotechnology will bring. Put another way, while nano-materials may create a wealth of new businesses, the managerial implications of nanotechnology have been generally ignored. The focus of this research is to understand the process underlying the creation, integration and application of knowledge in nano-related fields, where scientific breakthroughs have the potential to create radical innovations. More specifically, the analysis is designed to focus on the forms of organisation at the firm level in terms of knowledge production within the Nano Innovation System in Denmark, with the aim of uncovering factors which facilitate or impede innovation processes.
