4 King s Research Expertise The inter-disciplinary nature of biomedical and health-focused research at King s is highlighted by its importance across four of our main Faculties, each of which has established collaborations with the Crick. Between them, these Faculties offer 1,400 postgraduate research students an exciting, challenging and supportive environment in which to pursue their research. A short summary of the breadth of research and specific expertise within each Faculty follows. Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine The Faculty offers an integrated approach to postgraduate study across the life sciences, and has outstanding expertise across basic, translational and clinical research. Its research benefits greatly from close collaboration between academics and clinicians to both address the most significant challenges for understanding health and disease, and to ensure faster translation of research outcomes into clinical practice. Expertise within the Faculty includes: biophysics and cell biology, cancer studies, cardiovascular research, genetics, imaging and biomedical engineering, infection and immunity, pharmaceutical science, physiology, stem cell research, transplantation, and analytical sciences. 5 Dental Institute Recognized internationally as the most influential centre of excellence in the UK for oral and dental research, the Dental Institute at King s offers exciting opportunities for graduate research. The Faculty has significant expertise in biological science that includes: biomaterials, cancer, developmental biology, genetics and epigenetics, and stem cells. The Faculty provides exciting opportunities for postgraduate students to both develop expertise in fundamental areas of chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science and also apply these to research challenges in biomedical science and health. Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is one of the world s largest and most prestigious centres for postgraduate research and teaching in psychiatry and related disciplines, including neurobiology. 6 What our students say... I decided to apply to the Crick PhD program because it is a top-level program at one of the biggest research institutes in the world. The project I applied to is a King s-crick joint project; which is very exciting because it s a multidisciplinary project involving developmental biology and statistical physics. I spend a lot of time at both institutions and this has allowed me to attend seminars in diverse topics, and also learn from people with different backgrounds. I think this program is ideal for efficiently developing a project that encompasses multiple fields of knowledge. Edgar PhD student in the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences The rigorous training to be an independent researcher and frequent seminars from the national and international guest speakers helped me to learn about practical applications, methodology used and pitfalls that happen during the process of answering the most fundamental question in biological science. Modern science cannot thrive in isolation and if science is to progress there must be collaboration between government. interchange between international scientific communities and closer links between science and business globally.
