5 Inaugural Ceremony of SPIE Student Chapter At THE NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY The SPIE Student Chapter at the THE NORTHCAP UNIVERSITY (formerly ITM University) has been inaugurated on 12 November The guest of honor for the day was Dr. Virendra N. Mahajan, Adjunct Professor, College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona. The grand ceremonial inauguration was attended by all the dignitaries of the University, including Pro-chancellor, vice-chancellor, Distinguished Professor Kehar Singh, SPIE chapter Advisor Dr. Sunanda Vashisth, faculty coordinator Mr.Prabhat Kumar Sharma, Chapter Officers and all other SPIE members in the campus. The inauguration ceremony was followed by the first official meeting, attended by all 42 members of the SPIE student chapter Mr. Mohit Yadav (President SPIE Student Chapter) welcoming Prof. Virendra Mahajan and Prof. Kehar Singh. 5

6 Our chapter was inaugurated by Dr. Virendra N Mahajan as he was visiting India during our chapter installation days. He is still in contact with a few members of our chapter and we thank him for his support SPIE Student Chapter Members During Inaugural Ceremony 6

7 Beginning of Chapter The chapter was started in Nov 14 with 42 members. We have 5 student officers and 1 Faculty Advisor as well as 1 Faculty Coordinator, namely: 1. Ms. Malvika Sharma- Joint Secretary 7. Ms. Mahima Sharma- Treasurer Officers of SPIE Student Chapter Our Faculty Advisor has been a constant support and guided us the best. All our officers were dedicated to their work and this year we will be holding interviews for the officers posts and we all will be more than happy to guide the new officers in need 7

8 Chapter Activities: 1. Dr. Kehar Singh has been attached to our chapter since beginning. We started a lecture series by Prof. Singh. We have had a few interactive as well as demonstrative sessions. As of now, our topic of discussion is Holography. Prof. Kehar Singh ( Ex. Dean And Emeritus prof. IIT Delhi ) Delivering lecture to SPIE Students Members. 8

9 2. We have been organizing games and fun activities at our university festival and at university s club activity week to attract students and spread awareness about SPIE and Optics. Students are playing technical game related to Optics during Momentum

10 3. We have organized a demonstrative session on Holography by Prof. kehar Singh (IIT, Delhi). We have taken ideas from all members of our student chapter for games and activities. 11 4. On the occasion of National Science Day we organized a Quiz Competition. It was a two round contest held on 2 days. It was an elaborate event with around 15 teams participating. Score board during the Quiz on the occasion of Science day. 11

12 5. Two student members attended an international conference on VLSI organized by VDAT at Nirma Institute of Technology (Nirma University), Gujarat. Our members Mr. Mohit Yadav and Mr. Shubham Sehgal at Nirma University during an International Conference on VLSI by VDAT

13 6. An educational excursion for student members to Nehru Planetarium and laser exhibition at Delhi. It showcases natural phenomena with very simple experimental setup. 14 7. The year 2015 is being celebrated the world over as the International Year of Light. A SPIE-student chapter of NCU organized a One-day workshop on Optics: to Celebrate International Year of Light (IYL-2015) at NCU on 14 Oct., Prof Ajoy Ghatak (formerly at IIT Delhi) and Prof Kehar Singh (distinguished Research Professor at NCU ) were the distinguished speakers. They enlightened the participants on various aspects of optics such as polarisation, laser, fibre optics, holography, etc. They also spoke about some of the noble laureates in the field of optics and highlighted their contributions in providing crucial breakthroughs. Pro Vice Chancellor of NCU Gurgaon Brig. SK Sharma gave the opening address and emphasized the importance of optics in science and engineering and congratulated SPIE- Student Chapter of NCU for celebrating the International Year of Light (IYL-2015). The workshop was attended by more than hundred undergraduate and post graduate students from various colleges of NCR. In addition to the special lecture sessions, there were demonstrative sessions on holography and polarization, in which different types of holograms, polarizer, polarizing sheets etc. were demonstrated. This was followed by a quiz based on optics and its related applications in the field of science and engineering. The aim of this workshop was to motivate and inspire the students. Interaction with the speakers was highly enlightening for the students. The most-relevant videos, impressive presentations and real-time examples had a tremendous impact on the participants who felt excited to pursue further studies in the field of optics. 14
