Inserting links in D2L Captions The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal antidiscrimination statute designed to ensure equal access to opportunities and benefits for qualified individuals with disabilities. In many state, government, and education institutions, videos must include ADA compliant captions. ADA compliant captions should: Be one to three lines of text that appear onscreen all at once, stay there for a few seconds, and are then replaced by another caption. Be timed to synchronize with the audio. Not cover up graphics and other essential visual elements of the picture. Require the use of upper and lowercase letters. Use a font similar to Helvetica medium. Have a good resolution. Fit the 32-character-per-line requirement. YOUTUBE captions Editing text To edit the text of your captions: 1. Visit your Video Manager and click the drop-down menu next to the Edit button for your video 2. Select Captions 3. Click on the caption track you would like to edit 4. Click inside any line in the caption track panel and edit the text 5. Remember to save when you re finished If you re editing automatic captions, this will generate a new caption track including your revisions. Editing time codes There are a few different ways to edit time codes on your caption tracks. The easiest method is to edit the time codes directly in the YouTube captions editor: 1

2 1. Visit your Video Manager and click the drop-down menu next to the "Edit" button for your video 2. Select Captions 3. Click on the caption track you would like to edit 4. Select a specific line in the caption track panel and press the up or down arrow to adjust timing and the left or right arrow to change duration 5. Once you're finished, be sure to select Save Changes You can also edit time codes by downloading the caption file and using a plain text (.txt) editing program like TextEdit or Notepad to edit the captions. To download your captions: 1. Visit your Video Manager and click the drop-down menu next to the Edit button for the video you d like to translate 2. Select Captions 3. Select the caption track you would like to download 4. Click the Actions drop-down menu 5. Click the captions file format you would like 6. Your browser will download a file containing the captions track When you re done editing, simply add the captions back to your video. Media Server The media server is the preferred place to store large files. Although many files can be directly uploaded into D2L content, the media server has superior speed and storage capacity. To gain access to the media server, faculty must submit a request to the IT help desk (2222) Request the following: Your own folder on An installation of the free version of FileZilla FTP software Saving files to the media server 1. Open FileZilla 2. Enter the following log-in information: Host: Username: lrccd\<youremployeeid> 2

3 Password: <Your LRCCD password> 3. Find your folder in the right window. Folders are named using your last name and first initial. Open it by double-clicking. 4. You will now see the contents of your folder in the bottom right quadrant. 5. Drag a file from your computer into the contents area. Linking files from the media server 3

4 To link your file in D2L or Wordpress you will need to know the URL of the file. The first part of the URL will always be You will also need to know the name of your folder and your file to complete the URL. Example URLs: Insert a URL Link in D2L 2. 5 Inserting media files in D2L using the HTML Editor You can use HTML Editor's Insert Stuff option to embed media files: Insert a media file from your computer Insert a media file from your course offering files Insert a media file from your shared files root path Insert a YouTube video Insert a URL link Insert a media file from your computer 2. Select My Computer to browse and select a file from your computer. 3. After you select a file, click Choose Destination to select or create a storage location for the file. 4. Click Upload. 5. Click Insert. Insert a media file from your course offering files 2. Click Course Offering Files to browse and select a file from your current org unit file path. 3. Select your file from the file directory or click Upload to upload a file to the directory. You can also select a file type from the Media Type drop-down list and click Apply to filter your directory search. 4. After you choose a file, click Next. 5. Enter a Link Text and an Alternate Text. 6. Click Insert. Insert a media file from your shared files root path 2. Click Shared Files to browse and select a file from your shared files root path. 3. Select your file from the file directory or click Upload to upload a file to the directory. You can also select a file type from the Media Type drop-down list and click Apply to filter your directory search. 4. After you choose a file, click Next. 5

6 5. Enter a Link Text, if desired. 6. Click Insert. Insert a YouTube video 2. Click YouTube to browse and select a video you want to insert. 3. Click Next. You can preview the YouTube video from the YouTube Properties page. 4. Click Insert. Note: YouTube videos are not served using secure encryption protocols, whereas D2L is by default. Embedding a video from YouTube will create a warning for students that they are trying to display insecure content. Depending on the web browser and its security settings, the video may not appear. In order to resolve this, you will need to make a slight modification to the YouTube URL in order to have the YouTube and D2L security settings match (thereby bypassing the insecure content warning and allowing your students to see the video in all browsers).
