2 DOMAIN 1 Market Research, Assessment, and Forecasting DOMAIN 6 Marketing, Sales and Communications Management SUMMARY Engineering Manager Knowledge and Skills Required for Performing Tasks in the Following Domains: --Market Research, Assessment and Forecasting (Domain 1) -- Marketing, Sales and Communications Management (Domain 6) Candidates for certification require an understanding of a range of analytical tools, practices, techniques, and models in order to perform marketing and sales functions. They must have knowledge of the techniques, be able to apply them, interpret the results, and make appropriate recommendations. They must also be able to communicate the results and recommendations. The knowledge areas include: 1 Market analysis (customer base, competition) 2 Risk analysis 3 Trend analysis (economic, social, political, environmental, technological) 4 Benchmarking to identify best practices in other companies 5 Business forecasting tools and techniques 6 Technology assessment practices and techniques 7 Business forecasting and planning models 8 Sales and advertising practices (U.S and international) 9 Marketing and branding techniques 10 Product portfolio analysis
3 11 Pricing strategies In order to communicate the results and recommendations from the analyses, candidates need to have presentation skills. They should know presentation techniques including hardware and software. They should know how to communicate in writing and orally as well as respond directly to questions and other points of view. Candidates should also have knowledge of customer satisfaction strategies. They should know the techniques to obtain reliable measures of customer satisfaction and how to analyze current levels of customer satisfaction and recommend strategies for improvement. Finally, candidates should have an understanding of global trade and international operations. They should know cross-cultural differences, differences in management approaches, and how to interact with managers in different cultures. The resources must be identified and procured and the project must be managed through implementation to
9 completion. Engineering managers must be able to appropriately apply budget management, resource management, and project management techniques as they oversee their engineering operations. The knowledge areas include: 1 Procurement and contract procedures and regulations 2 Funding sources and funding plans 3 Capital budget and resource planning 4 Project management techniques including planning and control concepts 5 Financial accounting and budgeting procedures 6 Engineering economic analysis techniques 7 Work scheduling techniques 8 Inventory control procedures and supply chain management 9 Total Quality Management (TQM) and continuous process management techniques 10 Operations and manufacturability systems analysis 11 Maintenance and repair oversight processes 12 Techniques for monitoring the environment and adapting to changes Candidates must also have knowledge of software applications that support the procurement, contracting, and engineering operations functions. Customer satisfaction is an important monitoring requirement to determine whether product, process, or financial adjustments must be made. Candidates need to be familiar with customer feedback mechanisms and ensure that they are monitored.
