2 Which courses have special codes for modified or alternate curriculum? Only those courses for which an EOC exists or has existed: English I, II, and III Algebra I and II and Geometry Biology, Chemistry, and Physics U.S. History, World History, and World Geography 2

3 Since most of those courses no longer have an EOC, will some of these codes be eliminated? There is no plan to eliminate any of these codes at this time. 3

4 What code do I use for modified or alternate versions of all the other courses? Use the standard code. Since all courses taught for state credit begin with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the code and course name associated with those TEKS is the most appropriate documentation of the student s educational accomplishments. 4

5 Why don t we have modified or alternate versions of all codes? That would require the addition of almost 2000 codes, most of which would never be used. It has been determined that this would not be helpful for districts and would place an undo burden on the system. 5

6 If we use the standard code for a course, how will other districts or colleges know that the course was modified or that the student receives special education services? They will not know that from the transcript. Another public school will know that from the IEP. A college will be dependent on information provided by the student and/or guardian or provided by the district at the student/guardian s request. 6

7 Can we use a V code to indicate that modifications have been made to a course? You may not use a V code on the transcript. Any use of the V code in other records, such as the IEP, is a local district decision. 7

8 What code do I use for courses that are offered for local credit only? Use one of the 8 codes (Locally Developed): 84000XXX English Language Arts 84100XXX Mathematics 84200XXX Physical Education 84300XXX Health 84400XXX Social Studies 84500XXX Fine Arts 84600XXX Languages Other Than English 84700XXX Technology Applications 84800XXX Science 84900XXX Career And Technical Education 85000XXX Other Secondary Subject 8

9 I thought those codes were for courses that anyone could take. What if the course I m documenting is available only through an ARD committee decision? The description of these codes has changed. It now reads as follows: The following codes are for use with locally developed courses, including courses at the designated grade level that are available to students receiving general education and/or special education services. 9

10 Why can t we continue to use the 9 codes for these courses? This is the description of the 9 codes: The following code may be used for courses designed and provided through an individualized education program (IEP) that have been determined by an admission review and dismissal (ARD) committee as an appropriate substitute for a high school course that meets state graduation requirements. This code may only be used for students who entered grade 9 prior to the school year. 10

11 Since substitutions are not allowed for students who receive special education services who entered grade 9 in or after , those codes are not appropriate for those students. 11

12 I keep getting transcripts for transfer students from other schools in Texas that do contain 9 codes, even though the student entered grade 9 in or after Why? TEA has shared information on the changes in coding through as many venues as possible. We appreciate your help in continuing to share the new guidance. During the transition year ( ) and even in , some schools continued to use 9 codes. We hope this discrepancy will not continue in
