CDE is supporting the state s 178 school districts to attract, prepare and support great educators. Because... Every child in every classroom deserves to have excellent teachers and excellent building leaders who are supported in their ongoing professional growth. (Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Educator Effectiveness A Colorado Priority. Available: Adams State University has created ED 589: Mathematical Thinking Across the Elementary Curriculum to support you with this important purpose. It is important to note that this is not a course about discrete topics in mathematics. You will be exploring mathematical thinking within a holistic, cross-discipline approach to education. You will be helping your students think like mathematicians in order to better ground them in their understanding of mathematical concepts and processes. If this is your first time to take a fully online course, you will find it different from your previous experience. There is no face-to- face contact with your instructor and fellow participants. As you work through the course, you may begin to prefer this environment because of the flexibility that it affords you in managing your time and the learning materials. You should schedule some time each day for this course if possible. Adams State University Extended Studies Page 1 of 5 March 2014
2 The syllabus details the course expectations and provides important information that will help you through this course. Read this information with care. It will make your journey easier and produce the best results. As you move through the course, you will be navigating in a Blackboard environment. You will gain hands-on experience using Blackboard while learning key concepts in this course. If you complete the course successfully, you will receive a certificate of completion as well as Adams State University graduate credit--one semester credit hour. Communication is a critical component of the learning process. This course will provide you with many avenues to communicate with me and with your colleagues. A message and system is provided for internal and external communication as well as a discussion board that will allow you to participate in an on-line forum, addressing essential questions that I will post. I look forward to seeing your first communications! Instructor Information Instructor: Sam Sortore ssortore@adams.edu Phone: Address: P.O.
