I am so proud of all of our dancers for their continued hard work and dedication throughout the year! Please find in our packet guidelines for our dress rehearsal and recital. The purpose of Dress Rehearsal is to give parents and dancers the feel of what to expect for recital, and please note dress rehearsal and recital are held at Cullen Performance Hall at the University of Houston and Dress Rehearsal will take longer than Recital. It is very important to me to keep our rehearsal and recital as stress free and as fun as possible, so please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for being a part of the Houston Dance Works family, and I am looking forward to seeing your child on stage and having a wonderful and memorable recital! Thanks! 2 General Notes about Dress Rehearsal and Recital Dancers should arrive to dress rehearsal and recital completely dressed in his or her first costume with hair and make-up complete. Please put your child s name in everything accessories, costumes, tights, shoes, dance bag. If something goes missing, we want to know who we may return it to. We strongly recommend your dancer goes to the restroom before arriving at the auditorium, and we recommend you asking if they need to go take a trip to the restroom before the rehearsal and recital shows begin and during intermission. Only one parent or guardian per performer is allowed at rehearsal. Please do not bring guests to the dress rehearsal. Please remember dress rehearsal is not a show, it is an opportunity to practice on the stage for recital. The students need this night to work the bugs out and do not need the added pressure of a big audience, and this gives dancers and parents the opportunity to get an understanding of recital. No boys or men are allowed in the girl s dressing room. There will be a separate dressing room for Houston Dance Works boys. No gum, candy, food, or drinks (with the exception of bottled water) in the auditorium, back stage, or dressing rooms. We want to protect dancers with food allergies and keep our costumes and the area clean. Please throw away any trash in the appropriate receptacle. As a non-university of Houston sponsored group, it is a privilege to have the opportunity to have our recital at Cullen Performance Hall. We want to keep the school and auditorium as clean as possible so we may be welcomed back for years to come. Absolutely no photo cameras and video cameras will be allowed in the theater. No pictures or videotaping will be allowed in the theater by any electronic devices, including cell phones. Please remind your dancer(s) it is very important he or she stays with the class and class mom while at recital and it is polite and good etiquette to refrain from talking while other dancers are dancing. No children should be walking around the auditorium or campus alone. Houston Dance Works Recital Team members are wearing red Recital Team t-shirts. Our Recital Team is located throughout the auditorium and on each side of the stage. Please refrain from physically removing your child using the front of the stage during the performance or after he or she performs. Our recital staff is on each side of the stage should action be necessary. Costuming Notes Please go through your checklist and make sure your child has all of his/her shoes, costumes, costume pieces, and items needed for the recital before you leave to come to the school. For the rehearsal and recital, please note dancers should have no jewelry (necklaces, earrings, etc), no fingernail polish, no underwear under tights, and no fake tattoos. Band-Aids should be clear and please remove any stickers from shoes. How to do Low Bun What you will need: Gel, a comb, hair elastic, hair spray, hair net, and bobby pins What to do: You may work with dry or slightly damp hair. Apply gel generously to all hair at the roots. Please pay close attention to the whispies or fly-away hairs (if she has them). Part hair directly above the center of

3 the dancer s right eye. Slick the hair back into a low ponytail. Then, wrap ponytail into a bun and secure with a hair net and bobby pins. Hair Accessories Most single hair pieces should be worn on their upper right side of the hair. Ribbons that tie around bun should be knotted with loose ends hanging down below the bun. Note: As it is Recital Season, you may want to purchase your tights before the week of the show as we want to make sure that the tights you need are available. Costume and Dancewear and our online dancewear vendor, Discount Dance Supply, are very good about keeping items in stock, but you never know what could happen. Costumes and Dancewear 1503 Dunlavy Street Houston, Texas Discount Dance Supply Studio ID - TP35149 Parking You may park in the Welcome Center Parking Garage near the University of Houston Hilton Hotel. Please note the entrance to the auditorium in the front of the building. Please enter through the doors on your left hand side Call Times Dancers in Show 1 should arrive no later than 4:40pm for Dress Rehearsal on June 6th, and no later than 11:45am for Recital on June 7th. Dancers in Show 2 should arrive no later than 6:40pm for Dress Rehearsal on June 6th, and no later than 2:20pm for Recital on June 7th. Check-in Procedure When you arrive, please check-in at the front of the auditorium with one of the Houston Dance Works recital team members. Here, one parent will receive a wristband which will give you access to the backstage changing area. For security purposes and for the safety of our dancers, please note only parents with wristbands and dancers in costume will be allowed into the dressing and backstage areas past the public auditorium. Students in costume and the parent with a wristband may proceed to the dressing room once you have checked in. Your Dancer Sits with his or her Class Once you have checked in and brought any items to the dressing room, please bring your student to sit with his or her first class. The student section will be in the front rows on the right side of the auditorium, and each class will have a designated row with a label. Students are to sit with their class during dress rehearsal and recital. Please remind your children it is very important they stay with their class throughout dress rehearsal and recital. We do not want any children wandering alone on campus. Students in multiple classes are to sit with his or her first class, then, sit with the second class once the dancer has changed costumes.

4 Students in Ballet/Tap Combination Classes Students are to arrive at the auditorium dressed in his or her first costume. Once your dancer has performed his or her first dance, please have the parent wearing the wristband meet him or her at the backstage dressing room to change. Once you have changed your dancer, please bring your child back to the designated row for his or her class to wait for the next dance of your dancer. Photographs and Video Absolutely no photo cameras and video cameras will be allowed in the theater. No pictures or videotaping will be allowed in the theater by any electronic devices, including cell phones. The camera flash and the recording light on a camera are very distracting from the stage and can become a safety hazard. We want to keep our dancers comfortable and focused on stage. It will be the parents/guardians responsibility to inform any guest of these rules. Anyone in violation of this rule will be asked to leave to the auditorium. Class Pictures Mindy Melendez, of Happiness is Life Photography, will be taking class pictures at dress rehearsal. The pictures will be taken on stage immediately after each dance ends. Pictures will be available for purchase through her online portal within four weeks of recital. Videography Innovative Images will be providing videography for our recital. Videos may be purchased through Innovative Images. All Dancers Participate in the "Finale" of the Show! Don t forget All participants of our recital participate in the last dance of the show! We will run the finale at dress rehearsal. Dancers do not need to change from his or her last costume. Four numbers before the end of the show, we will begin lining dancers up for our GRAND FINALE! Picking up Children after Dress Rehearsal and Recital For the safety and security of our dancers, parents with wristbands are the only adults permitted to pick up a child. Parents with wristbands should come to the designated dressing area to pick up their dancer. Auditorium Seating Please note the doors will open to the public approximately 20 minutes before the show begins on Saturday. Seating is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. We understand family and friends would like to sit together, but please refrain from reserving rows of seats for your friends and family members. If you would like to sit together, please plan on arriving together. If we see that seats are being reserved, a Cullen Performance Hall usher or university police officer may ask you to unreserve your seats. Please not sit or stand in the aisles of the auditorium as this is against Houston Fire Code. Show Dancers Support! Please do not leave your seat while a group is performing. If you need to get up during the recital to help dress your child backstage, please wait until the dance on stage is finished.

5 Help make the dancers feel good about what they are doing...it is OK to clap for a group during their dance, not just at the end. Be generous with your applause during a dance number. However, please do not shout out dancers names during the dance, and please refrain from using air horns. Dancers will be more at ease and they WILL smile more with positive claps and cheering. Let s show our fabulous dancers you can see how hard they ve worked all year!
