The graduate will demonstrate the appropriate relationship management skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include both internal and external relationship management, business ethics and supervision. B. The graduate will demonstrate the appropriate project management skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include task organization, critical thinking and record retention, delegation, resource management and meeting deadlines. C. The graduate will demonstrate word processing skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include creation and management of documents; text, paragraph and section formatting; creating tables and lists; applying references; inserting and formatting objects. D. The graduate will demonstrate spreadsheet skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include creation and management of worksheets and workbooks; creating cells and ranges; creating tables; creating charts and objects; applying formulas and functions. E. The graduate will demonstrate presentation graphics software skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include creation and management of presentations; inserting and formatting shapes and slides; creating slide content; applying transitions and animations; managing multiple presentations. F. The graduate will demonstrate desktop publishing skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include creation and management of publications for distribution; working with templates; designing custom publications from scratch; using business information sets; working with tables; advanced formatting and merging publications with data; generating data driven catalogs; editing large scale publications; creating interactive websites. G. The graduate will demonstrate database skills necessary for successful employment in a business environment; to include creation and management of databases; building and formatting tables; creating queries; creating and formatting forms; creating and formatting reports. H. The graduate will demonstrate the appropriate accounting skills necessary for

IV. Course Description & Introduction In-depth coverage of desktop publishing technology, text editing, and use of principles. Emphasis on layout techniques, graphics, multipage displays, and business applications. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. V. Course Competencies Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: A. Define desktop publishing terminology B. Manipulate text and graphics to create a balanced and focused layout C. Create flyers, brochures, and multiple page documents. VI. Learning Outcomes The student will: A. Create a variety of documents and format them for professional use. Assessment Methods & Grading Policy Lab Participation/Homework 25% A Quizzes 15% B Mid-Term Exam 30% C Final Exam 30% D F 0-59 A. Lab This course is hands-on intensive and therefore laboratory exercises are an integral part of the expectations. Completing the lab assignments prepares you to be successful on the practical exams and the final exam. a. Lab assessment Lab assignments will be done in the classroom during the

4 Course Syllabus Page 4 lab hours. These will be submitted for a grade. All assignments that are submitted are not graded, however you are responsible for submitting all work assigned. b. Observation for labs done in class, your instructor will observe your progress and offer assistance when you have difficulties. c. Clarification you will have the opportunity to provide your instructor with feedback relative to what you did not understand about a lab. The goal for this is for you to help your instructor to determine the level of your understanding of an assignment prior to being tested on it, and to allow the instructor to clarify things where you have questions. B. Chapter Quizzes at the end of each chapter, a quiz will be given. Quizzes will be multiple choice questions and timed. No make-up opportunity will be allowed for students that miss the quizzes. I will drop the lowest quiz grade. C. Mid-tem Exam a practical exam will be given at the mid-term point in the class. It will be a practical exam over all material that has been covered to that point. There is no make-up opportunity for the mid-term exam. D. Final Exam the final exam for this class will be all chapters covered after the midterm exam. No make-up is allowed. VIII. Additional Resources & Supplies (To be provided by student): Pen X. Class Participation Policy & Student Conduct A. Texas State Technical College challenges students to be learners who assume responsibility for being a part of a community of scholars. Students who are absent from class miss opportunities to contribute to the learning environment of the classroom and are developing patterns that will not be tolerated in the professional workplace. C. In light of the above, the student is responsible for all assigned course work and cannot be absolved of this responsibility. When enrolled in a particular course, the student is obligated to do all of the work assigned. Punctual and regular attendance is vital to the discharge of this obligation and absences, excused or not, do not alter this responsibility. D. Students whose absences exceed 15 percent of the scheduled classes and laboratories may receive an F for the course. E. Student Conduct: a. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to dress in the appropriate attire for the class being presented. b. Each student is expected to act responsibly and take the consequences for his/her action or inaction as appropriate. F. Classroom Etiquette: a. An atmosphere of respect will be expected of all within the classroom. b. Any open displays of prejudice, harassment, etc. will not be tolerated. c. Any student who disrupts the classroom will be asked to leave and will receive a zero on all work due that day and will be counted as absent for the day. d. A second disruption by that student will be grounds for the student to be administratively dropped from the class and other disciplinary action will be taken as appropriate. e. There will be no smoking, dipping, chewing tobacco or use of profane language in the classroom. G. Cheating / Plagiarism Policy: TSTC expects all students to engage in scholastic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity. Any student found guilty of scholastic dishonesty is subject to disciplinary action. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on academic work (such as copying, bribing, or buying/selling tests), plagiarism (claiming another s work as one s own without acknowledgement INCLUDING Internet data), and collusion (unauthorized collaboration). See College Catalogue for additional information. XI. Safety All students in this course will comply with all general safety rules, which apply to the type of activity in progress in each class. Violation of course safety rules can result in grade penalties and/or other appropriate disciplinary action. XII. Special Needs
