4 UFSCar The Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), founded in 1968, is located within the state of São Paulo. The university has campuses in São Carlos, Araras and Sorocaba. UFSCar has about students distributed in 62 undergraduate courses and 54 graduate programs (22 doctor degree and 32 master degree) ARARAS CAMPUS In the Araras campus, located in Araras/SP, there is the Centre for Agricultural Sciences (CCA), which has five academic departments responsible for offering six undergraduate courses and two graduate programs to more than 900 students. CCA has a team of 75 technicians and 70 professors, and two experimental units in the cities of Anhembi and Valparaíso. 4

5 ARARAS Araras has about habitants and is 170 km far away from the capital of the state of São Paulo. It has a modern infrastructure and is famous for the high life quality of its habitants, being for six times the city that presented the best development index of Brazil. Its economy is based on industries, with a PIB per capita of R$ ,00*. 6 ARARAS CAMPUS HISTORY The installations are inserted into the city historical context. The place where, nowadays, there are laboratories, classrooms and all campus facility, was occupied by coffee plantations until After that, it was used by the National Program for the Improvement of Sugarcane (PLANALSUCAR). In 1991, the PLANALSUCAR was incorporated by UFSCar, which had as consequence the creation of Araras campus. Several buildings of the former owners were preserved and currently are used as Centre administrative and academic units. 7 ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS Department of Biotechnology and Vegetal and Animal Production The Department of Biotechnology and Vegetal and Animal Production (DBPVA) has a team with 15 professors, offering basic disciplines, such as molecular biology, botanic, zoology, vegetal and animal physiology, and technological disciplines, such as vegetal production and genetic improvement. 9 Department of Sciences of Nature, Mathematics and Education The Department of Sciences of Nature, Mathematics and Education (DCNME) is responsible for the development of teaching, research and extension activities for all courses and graduate programs offered in the campus, acting mainly for the courses of Biology, Chemistry and Physicist. The department presents a group of 24 professors who participate in several projects open to the community. Activities: The Bees and the Environmental Services. 10 Monitoring of Insects/Microorganism and the Agricultural Environment. Coordinator: Dr Ane Hackbart de Medeiros; Program of Development and Implementation of Methods of Physical-chemistry and Instrumental Analysis for Environmental Matrix. Coordinator: Dr Amarildo Otávio Martins. Department of Rural Development The Department of Rural Development (DDR) presents a multidisciplinary group of 10 professors, who participate of all undergraduate and graduate courses of the campus. Activities: Agroecology, Rural Development and the Environment. Coordinator: Dr Luiz Antonio Cabello Norder.

11 Department of Natural Resources and Environment Protection This department, known as DRNPA, presents a group of nine professors responsible for basic areas, such as soil sciences, plant nutrition and climatology, and technological areas of irrigation, drainage, fertilizers and weed management. DRNPA professors and technicians are involved in several activities in courses of Agronomy, Biotechnology and Agroecology, and in both graduate programs presented in the campus. Department of Agroindustrial Technology and Rural Socioeconomy (DTAiSER) The department has a team of 18 professors and acts in two areas: Agroindustry and Rural Economy. The department collaborates in the courses of Agronomy, Biotehnology and Agroecology, and in both graduate programs of the campus. Activities: Sustainable Agriculture. 13 Development of Agroecological Processes in the Familiar Agriculture of the State of São Paulo. Coordinator: Dr Manoel Baltasar Baptista da Costa; Quality Development and Control in the Sugarcane Industry. 14 UNDERGRADUATION COURSES The five departments on campus are responsible for offering of undergraduate and postgraduate. The first undergraduate degree was deployed Agricultural Engineering, over the years the campus was expanding and nowadays there are six undergraduate for more than 900 students. 15 GRADUATE PROGRAMS Graduate activities in the campus began in 2006 with the creation of the master degree in Agroecology and Rural Development. Nowadays there are two graduate programs: Master degree in Agroecology and Rural Development: Introduction to a new perspective in relation to food production, besides the evaluation of sustainable agroecossistems based on the agroecological concepts. Master degree in Agriculture and Environment: Aimed at improving technical qualification, critical sense and humanistic formation of who are directly involved with the program, students and professors, and of users of its products and services, such as technicians, farmers and other professionals from Agricultural Sciences.
