2 The System of Brazilian Federal Universities 53 Federal Universities in Brazil, and at least one in each State. Minas Gerais State has 11 Federal Universities (plus 2 State Universities). The Federal University of Viçosa - UFV (Universidade Federal de Viçosa) main campus is located at Viçosa, a town in the south-eastern part of Minas Gerais State.

4 Federal University of Viçosa (Universidade Federal de Viçosa - UFV) Inaugurated in 1926, Land grant college model Trilogy Teaching, Research and Extension Several academic aspects similar to the United States universities. Its first Chancellor, Dr. Peter Henry Rolfs, from the University of Florida, established a long tradition of collaboration with international institutions.

5 UFV Undergraduate Programs In 2006, besides its main campus at Viçosa, UFV added two new campuses: at Florestal and Rio Paranaíba, all in the State of Minas Gerais. Currently, UFV offers 55 undergraduate courses in almost all fields of knowledge In 2008 over 10,000 undergraduate students were enrolled.

6 UFV Graduate Programs In 1958, a most relevant and fruitful partnership with Purdue University (USA). Allowed the beginning of graduate programs at UFV on Agriculture in 1963 (Pioneer in Brazil). Currently, UFV offers graduate degrees (Master of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences) in 34 different areas.

7 UFV Graduate Programs Some graduate programs have been evaluated as of international level by a panel of foreign researchers invited by CAPES, the Federal Agency that oversees graduate education in the Country: Animal Sciences Crop Sciences Entomology Genetics and Breeding Microbiology Plant Physiology Plant Pathology and Soil Sciences

8 UFV and Brazilian Agriculture UFV has played a major role in the development of Brazilian agriculture. Has carried its leading breeding programs of soybean, common bean, sugarcane and coffee. Has formed several generations of agricultural scientists now working at other Universities and at EMBRAPA, our Country s largest agricultural governmental research institution.

10 UFV Internationalization UFV has strong interest in increasing its international relationships at all levels. Exchanging undergraduate students. Sending and receiving graduate students for their thesis researches in sandwich programs. Exchanging professors and researchers under research projects, where experiences, knowledge and academic and research materials are shared.

11 UFV s Interaction with Japan UFV has had some incipient and informal interactions with Nihon, Tsukuba and Hokkaido Universities, that have being very productive and should be enhanced. Scientific cooperation with other Japanese Institutions would be very fruitful in the fields of biodiversity, bio-energy, food sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, plant and animal genetics, soil and environmental sciences, and other fields of matching interests.

12 General Basis for Interactions UFV usually hosts foreign undergraduate students for up to one year and graduate students for up to two years. Academic fees in some cases are waived. One UFV teacher is designated as advisor. Documentation of course works and the appropriate academic records are provided for the fulfillment of credit requirements. UFV also assists the students in finding adequate housing on or near the campus.

13 UFV invitation for Dual Degree Graduate Programs We are proposing an international graduate (MS and PhD) dual degree program. Educational partnerships would be based on reciprocal graduate student exchanges among universities that have laboratories sharing common research interests.

14 The Dual Degree Graduate Program Proposal Student acquires academic credits and develops part of the dissertations research at the partner university. Credits acquired at the partner institution are considered to fulfill the requirements for the MS or PhD degree at his home university. The research period spent at the partner university may extend from 6 to 24 months of their graduate program.

15 The History of UFV Development with the Aid of International Institutions Prof. Peter Henry Rolfs, from University of Florida, USA, settled the grounds for its academic development. At the beginning, UFV anchored on USA most prestigious institutions to capacitate its faculty. This capacity building brought technologies that were adapted to the tropical environment, and allowed the formation of new Brazilian scientists. Later, UFV pioneered in the establishment of graduate courses, counting on American and European Universities.

16 UFV experiences on Technical Assistance to Developing Countries Training through undergraduate and graduate courses at Viçosa (usually sponsored by CAPES), and in situ short-courses and researches, especially in agricultural related areas: Latin America: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Africa: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe (PALOP), and Senegal.

Colombia (Integrated Management of Insects on Coffee Crops).
