1 2: SOLAR ENERGY STORAGE ANALYSIS FOR SMALL SCALE AGRO-MACHINERY Engineers Without Borders UK brings people, ideas and engineering together to respond to the complex challenges that we face as a global community. Engineering capacity is not evenly distributed around the world and by providing technical support and skills to projects we enable organisations and communities to overcome global challenges such as lack of access to power, clean water and safe shelter. To achieve this Engineers Without Borders UK recruit and support qualified volunteer engineers to work on 6 and 12 month opportunities based with our local partner organisations. This gives volunteers the opportunity to work on real development projects that are changing lives by bringing their technical expertise as well as providing a valuable learning experience.

2 Our international projects are our flagship activity and have been for over a decade. All our volunteers receive comprehensive training prior to departing and are supported whilst overseas. We offer a range of placements suitable for people with different levels of professional experience. Our international opportunities are the result of ongoing collaboration between Engineers Without Borders UK and our international partners. Our aim is to develop quality opportunities for high calibre volunteers, that respond to the needs and skills gaps of our international partners. Our international volunteering opportunities offer a wealth of benefits. Because of this we require all volunteers to commit to: Fundraising towards the cost of their project. 3 Attending a three day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited pre-departure training course on April 2017 and a one day evaluation upon your return. Raising the profile of Engineers Without Borders UK s work and staying involved in our movement after their placement Joining the Engineers Without Borders UK Alumni Network Return flight Accommodation Basic food Work-related in country travel Comprehensive insurance (excluding personal effects) Visas Half of the pre-departure training course cost Contribution towards essential vaccinations and antimalarials Personal travel expenses and insurance Travel within the UK for training, interviews or visa applications Toiletries Spending money Any costs relating to non-essential vaccinations Insurance for computers and electrical items Please note: All expenses are calculated on the local cost of living and paid into volunteers' UK bank accounts in a series of grants. It is the volunteer's responsibility to manage this grant for the duration of their placement. Engineers Without Borders UK is not responsible for reimbursing any expenses volunteers incur above the grant we provide. VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY TITLE 2: Solar Energy Storage Analysis for Small Scale Agro-Machinery ROLE TITLE Associate Energy Storage Analyst LOCATION Bangalore, India FOCUS AREA DURATION FUNDRAISING TOTAL ESTIMATED DEPARTURE DATE PARTNER ORGANISATION OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW Energy 6 months 1600 June 2017 Since 2010, the SELCO Foundation has worked to provide reliable energy services to impoverished segments in society in India. The Foundation works to link the benefits of sustainable energy to poverty eradication by collaborating with NGOs, local financial institutions, education institutions and social enterprises. Many rural livelihoods in India and other developing countries depend on motorised agricultural machinery that is energy intensive and requires a consistent supply in order to operate. It is possible however to optimise designs so they can be affordably and reliably powered by solar energy. Solar power is an ideal solution for micro-generation but the main challenge is to make it affordable for the small-scale agricultural business. SELCO realises that a number of systems exist to store solar energy and focused research is needed to find the most economically viable solution. 4

5 Solar-powered machinery will save households money and generate additional income for people in off-grid communities with unreliable power supplies. OBJECTIVES In the short term the project aims to investigate the suitability of alternative solar energy storage systems for small agro-machinery. The solution will be piloted with the Farmer Producers Organisations (FPO) in the rural tribal areas of Karnataka, Orissa, Bihar and North Eastern States of India. In the long term the aim is to optimise solar energy systems to increase efficiency and significantly reduce the purchase cost and operational expenditure for the end users. VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES The volunteer will be working with SELCO s technology team to: Undertake a comparative study of energy storage systems for small agro machines with a capacity of no more than 2 horsepower. The following storage technology will be under the scope of this study: Lithium Ion and lead acid hybrid system Zinc Magnesium-dioxide Hybrid Ultra Capacitor Produce a commercial, comparative analysis report of findings Coordinate with vendors and supervise the pilot installation of the chosen system Monitor and evaluate the pilot project Share the outcomes from this pilot with other practitioners directly or through an online portal SKILLS REQUIRED Technical skills: Bachelor's/Master's Degree/NVQ equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering or Electronics Engineering Familiarity with electrical and energy storage systems Technical proficiency in using solar simulation tools such as PV Syst /HOMER Proficiency in MATLAB would be an added advantage General skills: Volunteering experience 5
