1 Spelling Activities Spelling Bingo - Each player folds a piece of paper 4 times so you have 16 boxes. Each person makes his own game board and chooses 16 words from the current list and past lists (or use the same words more than once). Write one word in each box. The caller says a spelling word. If a player has the word on his bingo card, he traces over it with a pen or colored pencil. If the player does not have the word, he turns his paper over and writes it on the back. For a real challenge, play black-out bingo. ABC Order - Write your words in alphabetical order. Then write them in reverse alphabetical order. Riddle Me - Write a riddle for each word. Colorful Words - Use two different color pens to write your spelling words. Use one color to write the consonants and the other for the vowels. Do this one more time. Close your eyes and picture the word in your mind. Now try and write the word with just one color. Sparkle - Call out a word. The first person says the first letter, the second person says the second, etc. If a student says an incorrect letter, they are out. Then you go back and start over with the first person. You continue like this until the word is spelled correctly. When the word is spelled correctly, the person after the last letter says "Sparkle" and the next person sits down. Then you start with the next person with the next word. Eventually it will be between 2 students. Variations: The whole class stands in a huge circle around the room. Pronounce a word, then point to a student who is to say the first letter, the next student (moving left or right) says the second letter, the third student says the third letter and so on, moving around the circle. If someone "goofs", that student is out and returns to his/her seat. Repeat the word, then continue with the next student in the circle. The idea is to go as quickly as possible. Other ways of "getting out" may include taking too much time, repeating out loud what has already been said, or asking for the word to be repeated. It is a good idea to reward the final person standing with a small prize.

2 Spelling Survivor. Everyone stands and I announce the word. The first speller says the first letter, second person the 2nd letter and so on. The person who says the last letter picks a popsicle stick out of the class can. That person is "voted off the island" and is out. Anyone who says an incorrect letter is out, too. they cannot pull their own stick. When you are down to 2 players, it works the same way, except this time, when they pull the stick it could be their own and they are voted off. The last player is the winner Spell-O - Give each student a sheet with all the spelling words on it and spaces for each letter of each word across from it. The students choose three of the words on the sheet and circle it. Have little square cards of each letter of the alphabet in a bag/hat/bowl. Have a student pull out a letter and read it aloud. The students put the letter in the appropriate blanks across from each word that contains that letter. They can either do it for all of the words or just the ones they've circled...it's up to you. When a child has completed a whole word they call out "Spell-O!" and get a prize. You can either have them win when one word is filled in or all three. You will have more than one winner at a time. Fun Voices -Write the spelling word on the blackboard. As you point to each letter, have the students call out the letter...but not just in a monotone murmur. If the letter is a consonant, the boys say the letter in a deep, husky, "football player" voice. If the letter is a vowel, the girls call out the letter, using a high-pitched, "sweet young thing" voice. Once the students get the "hang of it", another step is added. Not only do students call out the letters in the different voices, but they also stand up, then sit back down with each letter. The drill sounds like a football huddle and gets everyone giggling (and practicing each word). Number Game- With students in groups of four, give each student a number: 1, 2, 3, or 4. Before the activity begins, write each team's name across the blackboard. Also have four popsicle sticks with the number 1, 2, 3, or 4 written on one end placed in a cup with the numbers down. Pronounce the spelling word, then allow the teams seconds to practice spelling the word within the team, making sure each member can spell the word. Say stop when the time is up and bring everyone to silence. Repeat the word and

3 randomly choose a stick from the cup. If the stick has, for example, a "2" on it, then all the 2's from each team come to the board and write the word below their team name large enough to be read, but small enough to be covered with their hand. Walk along and peek under each cupped hand, awarding a point to each team whose member has correctly spelled the word. By drilling each other, everyone learns to spell the word. By not knowing who from their team will be called on to spell the word, each person makes sure all of their fellow team members can spell the word. Instead of writing on the board, the players may go up and write on individual chalk boards or white boards. Spelling Bee -- Here is a game that we use to review and practice spelling words. My third grade class absolutely loves it!! Choose one child to be the spelling "Bee". As he buzzes around the room, all of the children chant this verse. "Spelling bee, Spelling bee, buzzing on your spelling spree; Ha Ha, Hee Hee; You can't sting ME!!! The current "Bee" stops and stands behind another student. The teacher recites one of the current spelling words. If the student correctly spells it, that child becomes the new spelling "Bee" and the old "Bee" sits down at the new "Bee's" desk. If not successful the whole class spells it in unison and the first child continues. To keep the whole class actively involved when one child is spelling a word, they can listen carefully and "thumbs up" if it's spelled correctly, and "thumbs down" if it's not. Anyway, it's really a very simple, fun game. Square Words-- Pass out a blank sheet with 12 premade squares on it. (Or however many words your spelling list has) The students must put 1 spelling word in each box. Once they are done, they cut out the boxes. Now give instructions on how to sort them. Example- One pile for the words with double consonants, the rest in another pile. Afterwards, you can pair up the students and they use their cards to play memory, face down on their desks. Word Speedway--On posterboard, create a generic race track. Game pieces include little toy cars, one for each player, and one die. The students need a list of the week's spelling words. Players roll to see who goes first. Once that is decided, the player is given a spelling word. If they get it correct, they roll the die and move that many spaces. If they get the word wrong they stay where they are.

4 Butcher Paper Spelling--Provide a large sheet of butcher paper and a variety of writing utensils in a center. Students copy their words onto a section of the butcher paper. After completing the word list, students are to be directed to find and circle, underline, trace over, etc. a specific spelling pattern. (Ex. Circle all of the words with a silent e.) They may also be asked to illustrate one or more of the words from the list. Rainbow Words--Provide students with a variety of colored pencils. Students write words from the word list three times each changing pencils each time. Reader and Writer--Students work in pairs. The first student The Reader picks a word card and reads it out loud. The other student (The Writer) writes the word on a white board. Continue with the next 2 cards. After the third word is written, students reverse roles. Create-a-Sentence--Have students pick 5 words from the spelling list cards and 15 words from the Dolch word cards. Have them create 2-3 sentences with a minimum of 5 words in each sentence. Copy the sentences using a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Word cards may be used more that once.
