3 Introduction to Lean Management The main idea behind the lean management is to deliver maximum to the end customer with minimum cost on the resources. That is making the complete production or service process efficient. A lean organization understands customer value and focuses on its key processes to continuously increase it. The ultimate goal is to provide perfect value to the customer through a perfect value creation process that has zero waste. To accomplish this, lean thinking changes the focus of management from optimizing separate technologies, assets, and vertical departments to optimizing the flow of products and services through entire value streams that flow horizontally across technologies, assets, and departments to customers. 3

4 5-S A LEAN Management Tool Introduction 5S is a system to reduce waste and optimize productivity through maintaining an orderly workplace and using visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results. Implementation of this method "cleans up" and organizes the workplace basically in its existing configuration, and it is typically the first lean method which organizations implement. The 5S pillars, Sort (Seiri), Set in Order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke), provide a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. In the daily work of a company, routines that maintain organization and orderliness are essential to a smooth and efficient flow of activities. This lean method encourages workers to improve their working conditions and helps them to learn to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory. A typical 5S implementation would result in significant reductions in the square footage of space needed for existing operations. It also would result in the organization of tools and materials into labeled and color coded storage locations, as well as "kits" that contain just what is needed to perform a task 5S provides the foundation on which other lean methods, such as TPM, Cellular Manufacturing, JUST-IN-TIME Production, and Six Sigma can be introduced. 4

6 Value Stream Mapping Why? Many organizations pursuing lean conversions have realized that improvement events alone are not enough Improvement events create localized improvements, value stream mapping & analysis strengthens the gains by providing vision and plans that connect all improvement activities Value stream mapping & analysis is a tool that allows you to see waste, and plan to eliminate it What Is Value? A capability provided to a customer of the highest quality, at the right time, at an appropriate price, as defined by the customer. "Value" is what the customer is buying 6

7 Value Stream Mapping Apply Five Simple Principles Specify value from the standpoint of end customer Identify the value stream for each product family Make the product flow So the customer can pull As you manage toward perfection 7

8 Kaizen Kaizen is small improvements and a change for better. It must be accompanied by change of method. The Kaizen concept stimulates productivity improvement as an ongoing process in any company. It is a practice oriented strategy which leads to creation of culture of improvement It is more a way of life or at least a cultural approach to quality improvement. The implementation of philosophy of Kaizen can be achieved through involvement of employees to effect improvements. 8
