2 Jewish Studies Program & The College of Arts and Sciences Celebrating our Continuing Partnership with Hillel Contact us: Chaya Kessler, Director D Bowman Hall Welcome -- Whether you ve been away for the summer or you re experiencing your first few days on campus - Bruchim Ha Bayim - Welcome to the Kent State and The University of Akron Jewish Community. Whether you re a current student, prospective student, parent, faculty or staff member, alumnae or community member, this guide is designed to help you navigate Jewish life and the myriad opportunities and resources available here on campus. We at Hillel deeply appreciate the strong partnerships we have with our host universities and the greater Jewish community. Our Board of Trustees ensures that our excellent staff of professionals has the necessary resources to provide high-quality meaningful Jewish experiences so that we can accomplish our mission of enriching the lives of Jewish undergraduate and graduate students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. My favorite part of working at Hillel for the past fourteen years is being with students. And for them, I have a special note: You are part of an energetic Jewish community on campus -- with Hillel as its foundation. College is a fantastic time for exploration. I encourage you to challenge yourself with new experiences and new people. I hope that Hillel can be a conduit for you to explore your passions through a Jewish lens. Whether it s finding new friends with whom you already share a connection, serving your local community through a service project, gaining résumé-building skills through a leadership position or experiencing a new twist on something more traditional like Shabbat dinner, we hope that Hillel will be a place where you feel welcome to express yourself. We have an incredibly professional and compassionate staff -- I encourage you to seek us out should you need anything. B hatzl cha-- Good Luck! Jennifer Chestnut, Executive Director jchestnu@kent.edu Jennifer Chestnut Executive Director

3 Dear Students, Welcome Dr. Alfreda Brown I am pleased to welcome you back to campus and to support Hillel at Kent State University, which serves Kent State and University of Akron students as well as the larger regional Jewish community. As vice president for Kent State s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) I feel a special relationship with Hillel and hold in high regard the quality of programming the center provides for this accomplished and diverse community. Hillel s presence fits well with the mission of DEI to support and engage underrepresented student groups, and to connect them to each other and to university resources. As the only Jewish organization on campus, Hillel has been an important component of Kent State for five decades, providing Jewish students with spiritual, cultural and social sustenance during their college years. I encourage you to take full advantage of Hillel s programs and of the opportunity to form lifelong friendships by connecting to other students, staff, faculty and the larger Jewish and university communities. I also hope we will have a chance to work together to promote our shared visions of social justice and academic excellence. Sincerely, Dr. Alfreda Brown Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Kent State University Hillel Your Jewish Home on Campus The Cohn Jewish Student Center, home of Hillel at Kent State, really is a home-awayfrom-home for Kent State and University of Akron students.
