1 English International School Moscow South-West Newsletter No 32 Friday 5 June 2015 FROM THE On Wednesday 3 June, being Principal for the Day was really good. I especially enjoyed observing lessons. I was able to see how the children worked in class. I noticed how the age of the child affected the style of the lessons. It seemed that all the students were concentrating well. It was a great, but tiring day! Nic Goimil Year 5 Principal for a Day FROM THE ADULT PRINCIPAL FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK Dear Parents FAMILY FUN DAY We have had an amazing week starting with our wonderful Family Fun Day last weekend. What a fantastic spirit there was in the school and how much everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was so good to see the whole community come together to enjoy themselves and thank goodness that the weather changed in time for the day! I want to say thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success whether by baking, donating or giving of their time. As a result of all these efforts we managed to raise over 20,000 rubles which the Student Council will have to spend on new toys and games. Given that it was not our intention to raise any money this year, but just to have a good time, this is a magnificent result; thank you so much. STUDENT PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY In the middle of this week I was temporarily replaced as Principal when Nic, in KS2, was appointed Student

2 Principal for a Day. All the other members of Upper Key Stage 2 helped by being Vice Principals for part of the day. It was a wonderful exercise and the learning which took place, most notably, to do with developing leadership amongst our older pupils was priceless. Aided by his Vice Principals, during the day Nic formally observed lessons, wrote an to all of you, had a Skype meeting with a representative from our Head Office in the UK, and spent time with two PTA Representatives. Nic was an excellent Principal though I think by the end of the day he was very tired. As I pointed out, at the end of school on Wednesday he knew how I feel at the end of a busy day. Well done Nic! COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS Principal Nic looks rather too comfortable at my desk! Finally, I think it is important for you to know that we are always considering the quality of what we do. You know already, I hope, that we aim to be family friendly, caring and take an individual approach to our students. I am pleased to inform you that as we continue to strive to be amongst the best we have almost completed the first part of our application to join the premier organisation for International Schools around the world the Council of International Schools (or CIS). This is a rigorous process which requires references from those who are not directly connected to us and a significant amount of review about how we operate and how we are performing. We are not yet members, but whilst going through the tasks which will eventually allow us to become member (I hope!), it does allow us to focus on what is important and think about how we can continue to improve. 3 NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS Early Years Ms Leah writes : This has been a terrific week even though last weekend s fun was hard to beat! We have been studying dinosaurs and the topic is really interesting to the whole class. We started off learning some dinosaur names and have learned how dinosaur bones become fossils. We have conducted an experiment with the plastic dinosaurs, pasta, and play dough to make our own fossils. This was really great fun! Our pond finally produced frogs and they were released into the pond in the forest. The children were sad to see them go but understood that they would need to hunt for insects now! A small frog from Early Years Key Stage 1 Ms Kristie writes : This week was a Red Letter week! After weeks of watering and watching our cucumber and tomato plants grow, finally we were able to plant them in our garden. We'd like to thank our gardener, Rawshan, for preparing the garden plot and helping the KS1 students dig, plant and water our seedlings. We also planted 5 pumpkin seeds. The package says they will grow as big as a small child! We can't wait to see how they have grown when we come back from our summer break! Also in science, we have been studying things above the ground and things below the ground. With the weather turning to summer, we have the opportunity to get outside more. We have been looking at insects, worms, roots, flowers and so many more things that are in our immediate neighbourhood. It's exciting seeing what an abundance of nature we have all around us. Maths is continuing with fractions. We are beginning to add and subtract simple fractions. Thanks again, everyone, for the participation last Saturday. It was wonderful seeing parents and students interacting. It's always fun to get together. Lower Key Stage 2 - Ms Davis writes : Congratulations to Seongmin for star of the week last week! This week we are experimenting with changing states! In Art we will be working on mixing colors and painting! Also, please

4 do not forget to bring in recycled good for making instruments. Upper Key Stage 2 - Mr Morton writes : Well done Olesya, our new Year 6 student, who was Star of The Week. She has settled into our school so well. What a great Family Fun Day! Well done to all the UKS2 students who supported the events. (Apologies for winning the Skittles competition.) Looking ahead to our summer break, we have been learning how to plan for a holiday. We had to make decisions about destinations, flights, hotels and car hire. Great fun and we certainly seem to have expensive tastes. We will be setting a limited budget for our next exercise!
