8 Student experiences Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience for students; seeing the sights, experiencing the culture, learning a new language and expanding their networks. Students that chose to come to Nottingham Business School get to experience all this and more. Here, a selection of students who came to Nottingham from across the world, share with us their thoughts, experiences, advice and guidance on studying abroad. Nottingham Student profile Name: Lara Dubois Course: BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance Dual Award student from EUROMED Marseille Ecole de Management, Marseille, France I came to Nottingham during the first year of my International Business degree as part of the exchange programme offered between EUROMED Marseille and Nottingham Business School. The course focused on Accounting and Finance, and offered methods of learning that were very different to those used at my school in France. We would have lectures to learn the theory and then seminar groups to properly understand the theory and work through practical examples. The sessions were also well structured making it easier for me to mix with students and tutors. My plan after I graduate is to progress my education further with an MBA specializing in tourism and events. I don t know yet if I ll stay in France or go abroad; but wherever I choose, I know that my time at Nottingham Business School will boost my CV and future opportunities. Marseille 6
9 Student profile Name: Andrius Biceika Course: BA (Hons) International Business Administration (top-up) Lithuania Oslo Student profile Name: John Kåre Solem Course: MSc Marketing Postgraduate Exchange student from BI Norwegian School of Management, Oslo, Norway During my time at Nottingham Business School I enjoyed being part of a truly international student community, gaining a comprehensive understanding of business functioning with real life examples and case studies. The University has some excellent teaching facilities, and the location of the city centre campus is perfect for experiencing all that Nottingham has to offer. As a city it is very student friendly. The skills, knowledge and experiences I gained while at Nottingham Business School, are still benefiting my career three years after graduation. Anytime I speak with a client about international business marketing, strategy or newest knowledge management trends I still refer to examples and case studies which were introduced to me and fully explained back at Nottingham Business School. Lithuania I was working towards an MSc in International Management, when I was given the opportunity to study at Nottingham Business School as part of an exchange programme. During my time at the School I joined the MSc Marketing course. I truly believe that the time I spent on this course will help me to achieve my personal goals, as the theory we studied was demonstrated through practical work too. Studying in an international environment gave me a different viewpoint on both practical and theoretical issues, as well as the chance to expand my personal network. I now have friends from China, Thailand, Italy, Germany, USA and France. I would highly recommend the city to others considering study here as it is the perfect city for students. Vienna Student profile Name: Astrid Kaisergruber Course: BA (Hons) Business Management and International Entrepreneurship Undergraduate exchange student from Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Austria I chose to study here after a fellow student recommended it to me, because she also studied at Nottingham Business School during her exchange semester, and her experiences were only positive. The School offers a wide range of courses to suit individual academic interests, which for me was very important as I wanted to learn something new that hadn t been a part of my studies at home in Austria. I chose to study International Entrepreneurship and feel the choice will benefit my career in the future as it taught me a lot about competitive strategy and innovation. Studying abroad has definitely been the highlight of my academic achievements so far. I gained so many new experiences, met people from all over the world and gained an insight in to their way of living and thinking. I can only recommend that if given the opportunity to come here and study, students should take it. 7
