3 Youth Referral Program Developed to assist Greater Sudbury Police Service frontline officers when using extrajudicial measures. Based on similar programs in Hamilton and Halton.

4 Enrollment Currently there are approximately 35 Young Persons in the Youth Referral Program. We are receiving approximately 10 new referrals per month.

5 Statistics Approximately 85% of the young persons who have been referred to the program have been deemed complete (have fulfilled the program conditions and completed the community youth program) 15% have partially completed the contract Youth criminal charges are down in Sudbury since the implementation of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

13 The Northern Ontario Suicide Prevention Network (NOSPN), of which I am the chairperson, is working towards providing a standardized approach to dealing with stigma related to Mental Illness in Sudbury by introducing the Elephant in the Room Anti-Stigma Campaign. 15 Just as arresting criminals does not reduce crime building hospitals does not make people healthier. Actions which increase social capital will produce positive results every time, regardless of which lens you are using. Specifically, we must support and enable all actions which -increase social trust -increase neighbourhood cohesion -increase collective efficacy -increase neighbourhood potential for community involvement with children -increase reciprocity/ mutual assistance -increase resilience -enable healthy behaviours -promote sports organizations (emphasis on positive norms and values) -decrease perceived levels of crime -decrease social disorder
