1 T.I.M.E. Association The T.I.M.E. Association A Success Story T.I.M.E., which stands for Top Industrial Managers for Europe, was founded in Paris in The T.I.M.E. Association celebrated its 20 th Anniversary on October 16 th 2009 (picture) at its birthplace, École Centrale Paris. From 16 members at its foundation, the network has grown to 54 members in , representing 20 different countries. The 25 th. Anniversary of T.I.M.E. was celebrated at École Centrale de Lille on October 24 th All T.I.M.E. members are leading institutions Engineering Schools and Faculties and Technical Universities in their own country. All have a strong international dimension in their research, teaching and industrial relations and all are committed to international cooperation, exchange and recognition of studies abroad. A list of current members is attached. The main purpose of T.I.M.E. is to facilitate the exchange of students for Double Master Degrees in Engineering. Since its foundation, over 5,000 carefully selected students have graduated with two Master Degrees and they enjoy rapid career progression in industry and in other fields of activity. T.I.M.E. graduates are mobile, adaptable and culturally aware. 1

2 A Democratic Organisation Representing its Members For the first 8 years of its life, T.I.M.E. operated as a voluntary, informal network of friends who shared a vision of how to educate international engineers. As the network grew in size, the need for a more structured approach emerged. T.I.M.E. was incorporated in 1997 as a not-for-profit organisation under French law, with formal Statutes, Bye- Laws and procedures. In accordance with the Statutes, the main decision-making body is the General Assembly (picture), a body where all members are represented. It meets once per year and is hosted on a rotating basis by a volunteer member institution (NTNU Trondheim (Norway) in 2012, Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2013, École Centrale de Lille in 2014, Tohoku University in 2015). The day-to-day running of the Association is entrusted to an elected Advisory Committee representing ten member institutions and headed by a President, a Vice-President, a Treasurer and a Secretary with the support of a salaried, part-time Secretary General. Members are encouraged to take an active part in shaping decisions (a current example is the Working Group on Communications) and in developing joint projects (an example since 2007 is the T.I.M.E. European Summer School - TESS - jointly run by 6 members on 6 campuses). The Association has a database on Double Degree cooperation with data on degrees prepared, contact persons, texts of agreements, names of students currently studying and having graduated. The database is on the Association s web portal: and members may log in to access full details and input their own data. 2

3 The Double Degree : Top-Class Graduates T.I.M.E. has always believed that the Double Master Degree, involving prolonged study abroad, full integration in the host institution, learning other languages and becoming qualified in a second country, is the best way to educate the engineers an international job market needs. It requires strong commitment on the part of the student, and only the most determined undertake a Double Degree study track. It also requires academic excellence. The Double Degree also means commitment and close cooperation between institutions and academics in different countries, in order to define the study path a student must follow to graduate: there is no joint curriculum and local differences and specifics are respected. In a word, T.I.M.E. respects and promotes diversity. The result is mobile, adaptable and ambitious graduates who are highly prized by international companies. At the T.I.M.E. 20 th Anniversary in Paris, a panel of recruitment and talent development specialists from leading companies including EADS, Air Liquide and Schlumberger (picture) confirmed that the T.I.M.E. profile corresponds exactly to the high-potential, internationally-aware and mobile young graduate they seek to recruit and develop to become the leaders of tomorrow. The T.I.M.E. Association believes that international means better quality and has developed a quality assurance and certification system for its graduates, where those who satisfy the rigorous T.I.M.E. quality standards are awarded a T.I.M.E. Label Certificate as well as their Double Degree. We have also fostered and supported the emergence of a T.I.M.E. Alumni Association which was founded in 2013 ( 3

Association : An International Community T.I.M.E. stands for Top Industrial Managers for Europe. 25 years after its creation, it may be useful to reflect on the continuing pertinence of this name. T.I.M.E. members continue to aspire to train top graduates thanks to the Double Master Degree. The reference to industry is part of the network s identity, and although naturally not all graduates these days work in industry as such, it is still highly relevant to T.I.M.E. s mission. As we well know, all engineers are destined to become managers. Although T.I.M.E. members focus on scientific and technical research and training, the humanities are represented and in this respect the T.I.M.E. Double Degree plays a vital role. What better way to develop as a person than to study abroad for a significant period, in a different language and culture, alongside students from a variety of backgrounds? Intercultural skills and adaptability are vital in today s world and will become more so in the future. Finally, T.I.M.E. is for Europe. Originally, all members were European, but in recent years the network has started accepting members from other continents. There are currently members from Asia and the Americas. However, the mission remains for Europe : just as European T.I.M.E. graduates may well work in other parts of the world, and for non-european companies, we are confident that students from outside Europe will want to study in European countries and, after graduation, to work for European companies, in Europe or elsewhere. T.I.M.E. is an international network, already present in Australia, Brazil, China, Russia, Japan and most major European countries. The network is open to universities from every continent.
