1 Borrowing a Kindle Book for Your ipad From Your Public Library Before Getting Started Your local public library must be a member of the New Hampshire Downloadable Books Consortium. See the listing: You will need a library card number and, in some cases, additional information like a PIN or prefix to log into the NH Downloadable Books site (NHDB). Check with your local librarian to make sure you have access to the collection. All Kindle ebook readers are compatible with the Kindle Books in our collection. However, the ebooks are not available in Kindle Book format. In these cases, use the OverDrive READ format. This format works very well with ipad 2 and newer devices. All ipads, iphones, ipod Touches, Android tablets and phones and a variety of other smart phones and tablets are compatible with the Kindle Books in our collection when using the free Kindle app from Amazon. An Amazon account is required. The same devices are also compatible with the OverDrive Media Console app and can be used to download and read all of the EPUB ebooks and play all MP3 audiobooks in the collection. The Apple devices can also be used to read the READ format in the device s browser. Logging Into the Site Log into the site with a library card from a participating New Hampshire public library. Scroll for the name of your library or town. Note that some libraries require a prefix or PIN in addition to your library card number. Check with your local librarian for more information. 2 Tips for Finding Available Kindle Books Did you lose the navigation menu? Get it back by clicking here: From the menu, select All Fiction or All Nonfiction in the ebook columns. Tap Available Now to narrow your results to ebook that you can check out right now. Available titles show a black book icon in the corner of the book cover. Page 2 of 7

3 Tap open the Formats menu to select Kindle Books. Tip: Pinch the screen outward (reverse pinch) to expand this area of the screen and make it easier to tap on this small link. You might also prefer to view the collection in List view. (List view shows more detail about each title without needing to click into the item record.) Sorting by Most Popular is a great way to see best sellers you might have missed. When you find a title you d like to check out, click on the title of the book. Checkout the title Double-check that the title is available in Kindle Book format, and click Borrow to check out the book. Page 3 of 7

4 Note that you can change the default lending period before you borrow the book. You can choose between a default 7 or 14-day lending period. Rated Titles Gray stars: Not yet rated Yellow stars: Others, but not you, have rated Blue stars: You have rated You are brought to your account >> Bookshelf. Tap Download and select the Kindle Book format. Confirm & Download to connect to Amazon s Kindle Book page for this book. If you checked out the title by mistake, you can return it immediately from the bookshelf -- until you ve selected a format. After that, you ll have to return the book from the Amazon site >> Manage Your Content and Devices >> Actions >> Return Book. You can ask your local librarian return the ebook for you. At the Amazon Site A new browser window or tab opens and you are brought to your Kindle account. If you are already signed into Amazon, you ll be prompted to select a Kindle device or app to send the book to. If you are not signed in, click the Get library book to sign in and select a device or app. Page 4 of 7

5 Tip: If you aren t already signed into Amazon, you might get a pop-up that encourages you to Sign In. Do not click on that large Sign In pop-up box. You ll be redirected from the correct path. Instead, be sure to click on Get Library Book. After signing in, you ll have the opportunity to select a device. Wirelessly transferring the Kindle Book Make sure your ipad or iphone is connected to the internet. Kindle Books can be transferred to an ipad or iphone via a local wireless network or a cellular connection. Press the home button on your computer to find the Kindle app. Page 5 of 7

6 From the Kindle App s Library page, you should see the book start to download. (Be sure you are connected to a wireless or cellular network) If the book doesn t show up immediately, tap the Sync button at the bottom of the Kindle App screen. Returning ebooks Early: Returning the ebook back to the collection early allows you to check out more ebooks and others to get the book faster. It s a win-win Visit Amazon.com and see the Your Amazon link. Place your mouse over the link and select Manage Your Content and Devices. You may get asked to verify your password before getting into the account. Page 6 of 7
