Talking about jobs By Eileen Garside When I was at university 20 years ago. It wasn t possible to talk to people in business about their work, but now it is. Two university students told me how this helped them find out about jobs after university. Going to meet Martin at the company was very helpful, say Jayesh Patel, now in his third year of business studies. I ve always wanted to work for an engineering company, but now I have a clearer idea about what kind of jobs are available. Martin explained what happens in certain jobs and even made an appointment for me to see his boss. I then spent a very interesting four weeks at his company over the summer and, after that, I was able to decide which job was right for me. Jayesh sees Martin as a friend (there s less than five years between them). Both men say that a small age difference is important, and Susan Chao agrees. She decided to Anna after finding her name on a list of past students from her university. It s great to Anna, says Susan. I asked her about her first few weeks in the jobs, which was very useful for me. 10
