Scott Adams ProgrAM OF STUDY The full-time student should expect to spend a minimum of three academic years in residency to complete the degree. The program is based on the individual s area of interest and undergraduate training and is jointly planned by the student, a committee of the graduate faculty, and a professor who serves as advisor to the student in the principal studio area.

3 APPlication Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has a dual admission process for degree-seeking status. Applicants must first satisfy the admission requirements and be approved for admission to graduate study by both the Graduate School and the academic program to which application is made. Contact the program director of your intended program for specific program admission requirements, such as test scores, personal interviews, personal history forms, letters of recommendation, or applications. It is the prospective candidate s responsibility to meet all requirements and established deadlines. Textile Arts: Textiles is an interdisciplinary program that incorporates a variety of techniques and methods of working including book arts, weaving, surface design, paper making and felting. The umbrella discipline of Textiles balances fine craft techniques with conceptual development and utilizes technology and technological development. The Textile Arts area has a well-equipped studio for weaving, papermaking and surface design. Textiles combines traditional and digital techniques as part of the creative art making process. 1. Three (3) letters of recommendation, preferably from art instructors (at the undergraduate degree granting institution), or from artists familiar with the applicant s current artwork. 2. A letter of intent of approximately 500 words, indicating professional aspirations and more immediate objectives pertaining to the program of study the applicant will pursue while in graduate school at SIUE. Photography/ Digital Arts: The option in Photography/Digital Arts is designed for students to pursue individual research in both traditional and/or digital photography. Students are encouraged to establish their own direction throughout the 3 year program. Drawing: The drawing area is committed to realizing the potential of each individual and to provide a challenging context for artistic development. Each student artist is led to simultaneously explore historical traditions while being encouraged to innovate. Painting: The painting program is based on the formal language of image making and how it relates to personal meaning, as well as to the exploration of a wide range of philosophies and ideas. The faculty strive to maintain a variety of approaches within the program which encourages students to engage in a dialogue informing and broadening their particular base of knowledge. A continuous evolution of idea exploration using the resources of faculty, visiting artists, and dialogue with peers, is promoted. APPlication A digital portfolio (powerpoint or self extracting presentation format) consisting of twenty (20) images in the area in which application is made. Some areas also require the submission of additional drawings, or images; contact the area head for additional image requirements. An image list should be labeled and submitted in the same order that the images appear in the digital presentation. Indicate name, media, dimensions, and date work was completed. Disc format and presentation format should be Mac-compatible (please make sure to check for updates on format changes on Graduate College and department website).

4 Sculpture: Sculpture candidates are encouraged to develop individually and no one style, material or philosophy is emphasized. The sculpture studio is generously equipped. It features a Pillar solid-state induction melter that is capable of melting aluminum, bronze and iron. The welding area features stick-arc, oxy-acetylene, MIG, TIG and a plasma arc cutter. The fabrication area has two anvils, an 80# German-made air hammer and a power roller. Printmaking: The focus of the Printmaking Area is to develop the highly creative printmaker. The indirect (artist matrix-print) nature of printmaking is taught as a palette of techniques and ideas rather than a repetitive or solely reproductive process. The organic, mechanical, electrostatic, chemical and digital aspects are understood as the vehicles of printmaking. All paths of aesthetic practice and expression can be considered. Equal emphasis is placed on honoring one s curiosity and one s imagery. Metalsmithing & Jewelry Design: The graduate jewelry and metalsmithing program at SIUE is based upon individual and personalized aesthetic and technical development. Fundamental to the program, is an awareness of the historical past in jewelry and metalsmithing as well as the rich and diverse array of aesthetics which exist in contemporary metalsmithing. Understanding and appreciating the present and the past becomes the foundation that will lead the graduate metalsmith to contribute into the new millennium. Ceramics: The ceramics program at SIUE seeks to prepare its graduates for the complex and competitive field they will eventually enter. Attending conferences and expositions such as NCECA and SOFA introduces students to the broader art world, and heightens their awareness of the work of their contemporaries. Entering national and international juried exhibitions complements this approach. Ultimately we are committed to fostering the evolution of ideas and techniques, and broadening the scope of possibilities within contemporary ceramics while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship. The ceramics faculty acknowledge their roots in ancient history while striving for new interpretations, challenging the physicality of the medium, creating art that speaks of our time and place.

5 DEADLINE Please provide a SASE and check for sufficient postage to ensure return of your portfolio images. The deadline for receipt of all material for the fall semester is February 1st of the preceding spring semester. In order that the M.F.A. program may achieve a broader perspective, students who receive their under-graduate art degrees at other institutions (other that SIUE), will be given higher priority in acceptance for admission. The Master of Fine Arts degree is a terminal studio degree designed to further the individual development of degree candidates and to provide them with professional competency in the creative arts of ceramics, drawing, metalsmithing, painting, photography/ digital arts, printmaking, sculpture and textile arts. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, is located just 25 miles from downtown St. Louis. Various members of the Art & Design Department regularly exhibit work within the St. Louis Arts Community.
