1 Gonerby Hill Foot Church of England Primary School Behaviour Policy As a Church of England school with a Christian ethos we endeavour to provide a caring environment where all children and their families feel welcome. We encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith, and promote our Christian values through the experience we offer to all our pupils. We actively promote British values as defined under the Ofsted guidance 2014 through our school ethos, agreed rules, curriculum and teaching. We aim to promote tolerance and respect for people of all faiths (or those with none), cultures and lifestyles; and support and help through words, actions and influences within school and more widely in the community to prepare children and young people positively for life in modern Britain. We expect high standards in all aspects of school life and want to ensure that every member of the school community has the right to be able to realise his / her full potential in a secure, safe and happy environment. It is important that children, staff, parents, carers and governors all work together to promote high standards of behaviour as this is essential if effective teaching and learning is to take place. Our Core Values Our behaviour policy is underpinned by our core values as we aim to be the sort of people that God would want as to be and to treat others in the way we would want them to treat us. We seek to reflect many Christian values and the following six have been chosen as our Core Values. They are: Forgiveness Understanding that forgiveness can be given and received, but that it must be genuine and from the heart. Compassion Understanding of the feelings of others, by putting ourselves in their shoes, and responding with kindness and support when they need help. Service Understanding that we have a personal responsibility to serve our community and to work for the good of others rather than for our own self-interest. Excellence Understanding that excellence is not about being the best but is about doing your absolute best to produce the best results you can. Knowing that excellence is achieved through high aspirations, hard work and great effort, perseverance and taking risks. Individuality Understanding that everyone is unique and special with their own gifts, talents and ideas and valuing and maximising these to encourage creativity and innovation. Community - Understanding that all within our school are needed and valued and each person is important to the whole community. Knowing that together we are stronger and can achieve more. Our focus on our values also compliments Our Golden Rules and how we manage and promote appropriate behaviour in school. 1

2 Our Golden Rules The children, staff, parents/carers and governors will work together to promote our Golden Rules, which are: Be Gentle, Helpful and Friendly; Always try your best; Listen to everyone; Be honest and fair; Look after property; Stay safe. Our Golden Rules will be displayed in all classrooms and around school and staff will ensure that everyone knows and fully understands them. At the beginning of the year all classes will establish a code of conduct / classroom rules and adopt routines and systems to support and encourage good behaviour. Staying on Green & Going for Gold All classes will have a traffic light system with Green, Amber and Red lights displayed with a gold star alongside. Each day is a fresh start, and pupils will start on Green every morning, at lunchtime and for the afternoon session. Pupils who follow the school s Golden Rules will remain on Green. Pupils who are not following the Golden Rules will be given a reminder, prompting to the rule(s) that specifically needs to be followed, by a member of staff. If the child continues to ignore the rule then he/she will be moved to the Amber traffic light. A child on Amber who corrects their behaviour by following the rules, will be moved back to Green. If the child continues to ignore the rule(s) then he/she will be moved to Red. Red means that the behaviour has been unacceptable and the child will receive a Red Card. He/she will automatically miss the next class playtime and will be sent to the Headteacher to explain why the Red Card was given. The child will then go back to green as an incentive to put things right. Hurting someone will automatically move a child to Red Parents will be contacted by the Headteacher if their child receives two Red Cards in one week. Children who receive Red Cards will lose parts (depending of the length of class Golden Time) of their Golden Time on Friday afternoon. We feel it is important to promote and reward positive behaviour. The majority of children will always follow the Golden Rules and stay on Green and that is the expectation. To encourage these children to push themselves further, Gold Stars will be awarded for consistently following the Golden Rules and going above and beyond expectations. Being awarded a Gold Star is at the teacher s discretion. If a child receives two Gold Stars in one week, he/she will be awarded a Golden Ticket which is an invitation to choose a reward which will take place during a Friday afternoon within that term. 2

3 Other Rewards In addition to Staying on Green and Going for Gold, children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 will be rewarded with stickers and excellent awards for effort, excellent work and progress made, for looking after and helping others and for looking after the environment. In Key Stage 2 House Points will replace stickers and will be counted weekly and the winning House team will be rewarded with a block on the House Points chart. At the end of the term, the House Team with the most blocks will receive an extra playtime. House Points are mainly used to promote teamwork and collaboration and KS2 Teachers may also use stickers to praise good behaviour, effort and achievement. Diamond Award Assembly Every week each class teacher nominates two children to receive Diamond Awards to celebrate achievements during the week. These can be awarded to acknowledge excellence in a piece of work, to celebrate progress made in a specific subject area or to reward achievement in a social or emotional aspect of school life. Class teachers will explain why the award has been given in the Friday Celebration Assembly, and each child will receive a certificate. Child of the Term Awards Each term the pupils in each class will nominate one child who has been an exemplary role model in terms of their behaviour and attitude to learning. Staff will guide pupils to make appropriate choices by highlighting exemplary characteristics. The nominated Children of the Term will receive a certificate in a special assembly. Other strategies used to promote positive self-esteem and good behaviour include: 1. A relevant, motivating, stimulating curriculum, differentiated to meet the needs of all pupils; 2. Talking and learning about behaviour through the SEAL programme and Circle Time, class reflection time and assemblies; 3. Praising/rewarding children who are exhibiting good behaviour. Expectations Children are expected to: Staff will: Arrive at school on time every day; Come into school sensibly at the appropriate time; Move around school calmly and quietly; Listen to each other and adults and consider each other s feelings; Use only a calm voice while in the school building; Dress smartly wearing the correct uniform; Follow the school s Golden Rules. Use praise for achievement, appropriate behaviour, skills and effort. Praise should be specific and relate to the Golden Rules. Listen to the children and build relationships; 3

4 Give more attention to positive behaviour than negative; Where children behave inappropriately, follow the Staying on Green system fairly and consistently; Create a positive and safe environment; Be on time to greet the children to ensure they are calm and quiet as they enter the classroom; At the end of the day accompany the class quietly and calmly to the playground to ensure their safety; Take all bullying, sexism, racism and homophobia very seriously. Tell children when and how they will address the issue. All incidents will be recorded in the Incident Book and reported to the Head Teacher and dealt with in accordance with the individual polices; Seek advice and support when inappropriate behaviours continue despite intervention; Give feedback to parents about their child s behaviour celebrating good behaviour and achievements as well as sharing any concerns. We believe that excellent teaching and learning promotes positive behaviour, therefore, all teaching is underpinned by the school's Teaching and Learning Policy. How parents/carers can help: Talk to their children about the school expectations of work and behaviour; Praise children for good behaviour, for Staying on Green and achieving Gold; Attend parents evenings and communicate with the school any concerns/issues which may affect their child s behaviour/learning; Ensure that their child attends school regularly, on time and wearing full school uniform; Work in partnership with staff to provide the best possible support for their child. Accept and follow the school s Home School Agreement. Persistent Inappropriate Behaviour Most behavioural incidents will be managed through following the system outlined in this policy. Where children are not responding to this system an individual behaviour programme, behaviour chart or Pastoral Support Plan may be required. This will be discussed and prepared with the class teacher, member of the Senior Leadership Team and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator if problems persist. Parents will be advised and involved when behaviour programmes are drawn up. The school will liaise with such agencies as the Education Welfare Service, Learning Support Services, Emotional and Behaviour Support Services, Social Services, Health Services and the Educational Psychology Service as necessary. In cases of extreme misbehaviour the school will consider the use of Exclusion. In the event of verbal abuse, sexual abuse, racist abuse, or extreme physical aggression the Head Teacher will assess the severity of the situation and contact parents/carers if 4

5 necessary. Racist incidents are dealt with and reported in line with local authority procedures. Bullying Please see our anti bullying policy. At Lunchtime The Midday Supervisors are responsible for managing pupil behaviour at lunchtimes. They will promote positive behaviour using the Golden Rules. Unacceptable behaviour will be dealt with according to Traffic Light system outlined in this policy. Class teachers will be informed of any Amber warnings given. Unacceptable behaviour resulting in a Red Card will be reported to the Senior Leadership Team. Power to use reasonable force Members of staff have the power to use reasonable force to prevent pupils committing an offence, injuring themselves or others, or damaging property, and to maintain good order and discipline in the classroom. Head teachers and authorised school staff may also use such force as is reasonable given the circumstances when conducting a search without consent for knives or weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, stolen items, tobacco and cigarette papers, fireworks, pornographic images or articles that have been or could be used to commit an offence or cause harm. In these circumstances, staff will refer to the document Use of Reasonable Force advice for school leaders, staff and governing bodies. Use_of_reasonable_force_advice_Reviewed_July_2015.pdf Monitoring Behaviour records will be reviewed and evaluated by the Senior Leadership Team at regular intervals, assisted by the School Council.
