1 St. Barnabas Church of England Aided Primary School Vision: All children are created uniquely and loved by God. We are entrusted with the privilege of nurturing and developing these children. Providing an outstanding education will enable children to reach their full potential in life. Children will contribute meaningfully to the future of our community and society at large. The Christian faith plays a vital role in informing behaviour and moulding character of all adults and children in the school community. BEHAVIOUR AND ANTI BULLYING POLICY This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15 v 12 Reason for Policy We, at St. Barnabas, believe that good behaviour is of paramount importance in maintaining a safe and positive working relationship with the pupils, parents/carers and wider community. As a whole school community we shall endeavour to: promote positive, thoughtful and caring patterns of behaviour; maximise the effectiveness of teaching and learning through the establishment of a purposeful working atmosphere; provide role models of good behaviour with an emphasis on politeness; encourage pupils to be responsible and aware of the effect of their behaviour on others; seek to ensure the safety and well being of the whole school community. All staff, both teaching and non teaching share the responsibility for maintaining high standards of behaviour throughout the school. Promoting good behaviour We promote good behaviour by: Each class follows their own rules. These are standard class rules followed by all classes and incorporate individual rules devised by each class for themselves.

2 House points are awarded for positive behaviour. Sending pupils to another teacher/headteacher to receive additional praise. Wall displays that value a child's best efforts. Praise in School Celebration Assemblies where Headteacher Awards are given. Praise communicated to parents/community. The traffic light system is used to monitor behaviour in class and used at each teachers discretion. Full Details of the traffic light system is in the Appendix to this policy Partnership with Parents/Guardians It is the school's policy to welcome the interest and close involvement of parents / guardians. If a child's behaviour is giving the school cause for concern, i.e. they reach red on the traffic light system, parents/guardians are contacted and asked to come in. If a particular incident occurs in school, the class teacher or Headteacher will inform the parents/guardians by inviting them to come into school to discuss the incident. Behaviour strategies may be agreed to help the child to modify their behaviour. If inappropriate behaviour persists the school may involve outside agencies. In extreme cases the exclusion procedure would be implemented. Vulnerable pupils will be helped using various strategies. The Physical Restraint of Pupils Occasions arise when the safety of a child or other children requires direct physical intervention by adults and these will be carefully monitored and recorded. Mainstream schools are governed by the 1986 Education Act which abolished corporal punishment in the state sector. Recent DFE advice outlines the justification for the use of force recognising the occasional need for a teacher or other members of staff to use physical intervention in areas previously outlined. Racial and Sexual Harassment It is our policy at St Barnabas to strongly oppose any harassment or discrimination of individuals or groups based upon their colour, race, nationality, ethnic origins or gender. Any incidents of harassment or discrimination will be taken seriously with the equal opportunities policy followed. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR Pupils refusing to do as asked Bad language / gestures Bullying verbal or physical Cyberbullying Racism Stealing or damaging items belonging to school or other pupils Persistent disruption to learning

3 Assault on members of staff/pupils verbal or physical Record Keeping Provision exists within the school's system of record keeping and reporting to comment upon the children's general behaviour. If a pupil's behaviour requires monitoring or is causing concern, detailed notes will be kept by the class teacher and discussed with the headteacher. The traffic light system requires that each time a child s behaviour reaches red notes will be kept regarding each incident. School Rules Every new school year, the children write their own school rules based on our School Values. This enables the children to take ownership of the rules and have the school rules at an appropriate level. Bullying Bullying is Behaviour by an individual or a group, usually repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual either physically or emotionally, Bullying can happen to anyone. This policy covers all types of bullying including: Bullying related to race, religion or culture Bullying related to learning difficulties or disability Bullying related to appearance or health conditions Bullying relate to sexual orientation Bulling of young carers or relate to home circumstances. Bullying can take many forms. The three main types are: Physical hitting, kicking, taking belongings Verbal name calling, insulting or racist remarks Indirect spreading unpleasant stories about someone, excluding someone from social groups, cyberbullying Prevention is better than cure so all staff will: Actively provide opportunities to develop students social and emotional skills including their resilience. Be vigilant for signs of bullying Always take reports of bullying seriously and investigate them thoroughly Use the curriculum to increase children s awareness of bullying to help them to develop strategies to report it and to combat it Train staff to identify bullying and follow school policy and procedures on bullying, including recording incidents of bullying. Actively create safe spaces for vulnerable children

4 Working with parents and carers We will: Ensure that all parents/ carers know who to contact if they are worried about bullying Ensure all parents know about our complaints procedure and how to use it effectively Ensure all parents/ carers know where to access independent advice about bullying Work with all parents and the local community to address issues beyond the school gates that give rise to bullying. Review This Policy will be kept under constant review by members of the school team, including staff, parent/carers, governors. The Policy will be automatically reviewed at the start of each school year as part of the procedure set up arrangements. 5 Appendix 1 Traffic Light System: Traffic lights, consisting of green, amber and red spots, are displayed in each class. The system is used to control low level disruptive behaviour. For example: Shouting out Distracting others rudeness All children start on Green. A child may be moved to amber then red, at the teacher s discretion, following a behaviour issue. A child may be moved down again at the next break following renewed good behaviour patterns. Each time a child reaches red they will need to see the Headteacher to talk about their behaviour. Any violent outburst towards others will mean immediate red. Should a child reach red 3 times in any one term, and then his or her parents will be contacted. Whether or not a child moves up or down the traffic light system following any behaviour is at the total discretion or the class teacher and may be different for each class. Appendix 2 Practical strategies for developing good behaviour 1.1 Praise children's positive behaviour no matter how small a step. 1.2 Provide regular praise highlighting children who are behaving well. 1.3 Take time to talk to children privately and personally. 1.4 If a child has a particular behavioural problem, talk it through with him/her indicating the positive steps he/she might take to improve the situation. 1.5 Ensure eye contact. 1.6 Smile to reward positive behavioural patterns. 1.7 Be sure not to criticise all misdemeanours equally. Stress whether it is a small matter or a really important issue. 1.8 Display flexibility in grouping children with varying behaviour patterns. 1.9 Break tasks into small units to provide greater variety for children who find concentration difficult Spend additional time near disruptive pupils so that you can supervise them adequately. Try to ensure that they are constantly visible Be prepared to call the class together repeatedly, even in a single session, to explain your concerns. It will be a good investment of your time and theirs Insist on and ensure calm when bringing children in from the playground. Be ready to receive them. This sets the tone for the session Be aware that the reasons for persistently poor behaviour may have a root cause in circumstances beyond your control such as lack of sleep, security at home, safety, food or other underlying reasons Remember it is the act of poor behaviour and not the child that is at fault. Managing behaviour 2.1 Engage the pupil in quiet conversation away from other pupils to describe the exact behaviour that is undesirable and the positive steps he/she can take to remedy it. 5

6 2.2 Encourage children to independently move away from disruptive peers and to display self discipline in such situations. 2.3 Avoid punishing whole groups for the activities of individuals unless there are exceptional circumstances. Punishments should be in proportion to the offence. 2.4 Separate pupils who are displaying poor behavioural traits by moving them away from their friends/peer groups etc. 2.5 The traffic light system is used to control low level disruptive behaviour.
