2 Anti-Bullying Policy Statement of intent At Cheshunt School we are committed to having a safe and secure school community where everyone feels valued and any form of bullying is dealt with swiftly and effectively. Cheshunt school is a place people want to come to learn and work. Through this ethos and culture our students develop into caring individuals sensitive to the needs of others. Aim of Policy The aim of the policy is to help us deal with incidents of bullying quickly, effectively, consistently and with sensitivity. Principles All members of the community have a right to: Feel safe in and around the building. Feel safe from any form of social media. Be treated with respect regardless of age, gender, race or religion. Be listened to. Their own space which no one is entitled to enter with the intent to hurt, harm or humiliate. Support when it is needed. Definition of Bullying Bullying involves a person or group of people persistently being nasty or cruel to another person with the intent to cause hurt or upset. Bullying can be: Physical pushing,hitting, kicking, barging,throwing objects at or any use of violence. Verbal name calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing. Emotional - being unfriendly, tormenting, saying things about family members, taking belongings Racist - racial taunts, graffiti, gestures. Sexual unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments. Homophobic - because of or focussing on the issue of sexuality or sexual orientation. Cultural because of their faith, religion or beliefs. Disability related physical or learning. Cyber all areas of internet such as or social media. Mobile threats by text messaging or calls. Misuse of associated technology i.e. cameras or other video facilities. Anti-Bullying Policy 2 January 2014

3 Roles and Responsibilities We expect our staff to: Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a safe learning environment. Have high expectations of behaviour Foster self-esteem, self-respect and respect for others Respond promptly to behaviour which makes any member of the community feel uncomfortable or unhappy Listen to students if they are reporting bullying behaviour and take appropriate action Follow up any complaint about bullying from student or parent and report back promptly and fully on the action which has been taken Deal with observed instances of bullying promptly and effectively,in accordance with agreed procedures Have clear rules and routines for behaviour and take responsibility for promoting good and courteous behaviour both in classrooms and around the school, in accordance with the school s behaviour policy Manage students effectively, using approaches which are appropriate to students needs Maintain good relationships with students, exercise appropriate authority, and act decisively when necessary. Report incidents of bullying accurately on SIMS and inform the Student Support Team immediately so that incidents can be investigated and resolved swiftly We expect our students to: Be responsible for their behaviour and follow the school behaviour policy Make a positive contribution within the classroom and the wider school community Refrain from becoming involved in any kind of bullying, even under peer pressure Intervene to protect a student who is being bullied Report to staff any witnessed or suspected instances of bullying Anyone who becomes a target of bullies should: Not suffer in silence, but be confident to speak out to put an end to their own suffering and that of other potential victims We expect our Parents/Carers to: Advise their child to report any bullying to a member of the Student Support Team. Advise their child not to retaliate violently to any forms of bullying. Inform the school of any suspected bullying and provide evidence where available of any online bullying activity. Support the school in matters of discipline which ensures the safety and progress of all students. This might include instances where their child is the perpetrator. Inform the school if they have any concerns about their child. Anti-Bullying Policy 3 January 2014

4 We expect our Governors to: Require the school s analysis of bullying and the actions taken to be included in regular behaviour reports to governors. Challenge and support the school accordingly. Seek the views of students, parents and carers,and staff on a regular basis about the school culture. Procedures This policy enhances the school behaviour policy and procedures of reporting incidents will be the same as for any other behaviour concern. Procedures All incidents will be investigated promptly and thoroughly and written record made. All involved will be interviewed separately and written statements made which are dated and signed by the interviewer and interviewee. Any witness information will be collected and signed. Once facts have been established appropriate action will be implemented. Parents of both the victim and the perpetrator/s will be informed. SEE FLOW CHART. A programme of anti bullying and raising awareness support will be implemented for both the victim and the perpetrator to prevent future incidents of bullying behaviour. If this action is not successful other strategies and /or sanctions will be applied. Strategies to minimise incidents of bullying Effective anti-bullying programmes through PSHE. Raising awareness through anti bullying events and assemblies. Vigilance of adults and other students in preventing and reporting incidents. Whole school promotion of positive behaviour. Peer supporters team (HABI). Support Mediation between students involved. Counselling on appropriate behaviour for the victim and perpetrator. Follow up mentoring to support the victim with self-esteem and assertive behaviour. Follow up mentoring to support the perpetrator with acceptable behaviours and respecting others. Working with parents/carers. Sanctions Reprimand and warning. Detention. Isolation. Fixed term exclusion. Permanent exclusion. Anti-Bullying Policy 4 January 2014
