1 Cornerstone Christian College Student Management System The Cornerstone Charter To ensure all students are able to develop the learning outcomes described within the Australian curriculum and the Early Years Learning Framework, which defines the curriculum for all schools (government and non-government). To provide an educational program that is uniquely Christian. We will teach, model and integrate Christian values and beliefs innovatively, creatively and authentically throughout the learning program. To ensure every lesson and learning experience is a result of purposeful planning and is professionally facilitated or delivered by dedicated Christian teachers, whose efforts are genuinely and actively supported by school leaders, support staff, parents and the wider community. To always maintain a school environment where students can learn in a safe and caring place, without fear of disruption or harassment. To recognize, celebrate and nurture each child s unique gifts and strengths. To teach students what it means to be strong, loving and self-disciplined as described in the Bible in Romans 12:2, by encouraging students to make a difference in the lives of others and to stand firm for what they believe. Within the Cornerstone Charter it is understood that every student and teacher has the right to: Learn and teach free from disruption Be treated with respect A safe and positive environment, free from discrimination and abuse Have their property treated with respect and care Guiding and Supporting Student Behaviour The College believes all students should be treated with respect and seeks to build positive relationships with students and their families. Students are encouraged to develop relationships with one another within a safe and respectful environment. Their ability to interact with others when acceptable behavior is promoted and consequences are consistent. This will encourage a positive atmosphere where self-esteem is supported and confidence develops. The College will encourage students to talk about any concerns they may have and will promote values such as friendliness, acceptance, respect, kindness, patience and cooperation. At times students may need guidance and support to make responsible choices and regulate their own behaviour. The College will provide positive guidance and support towards

2 acceptable behavior. As students recognise inappropriate behavior they will be encouraged to appropriately control their emotions and actions. Students will be supported whilst learning over time how to manage their feelings and take responsibility for their own behaviour. The College believes that developing a supportive relationship with students encourages them to learn skills in self-control. There are many ways in which students are encouraged to practice selfcontrol, to be givers and not takers. These include teachers showing a genuine interest in each student with praise and encouragement. Achievements are communicated to parents informally and formally through: classroom rewards, awards (certificates of Merit) are given out at assemblies, Endeavour and Academic Awards are given to students in each class from Years 3-6 at the end of the term and the end of year presentation night. The College pays particular attention to rewarding positive behaviour both within classrooms and through whole school acknowledgment of desirable behaviours. Students are encouraged to become confident, responsible and respectful and to develop a healthy self-esteem. They are guided towards taking responsibility for their own actions and build resilience as they learn how to manage their emotions and behaviours in socially acceptable ways. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions within the framework of a loving and caring school community. Challenging or Persistently Unacceptable Behaviour If a student is disruptive they need to realise their behaviour has a negative impact on themselves and others around them. The College will work with the student to ensure they are positively supported whilst reinforcing consistent and appropriate boundaries. The consequences of challenging behaviour will be discussed with the student and consistently followed through. Students will be given opportunities to respond positively before consequences enforced. The College seeks to work in partnership with families. Open and clear communication between families and the College is vital when supporting students through recurring challenging behaviours. Every student has the right to the best conceivable teaching and learning program at Cornerstone Christian College. Staff will do all that they can to create a positive and caring school community. They will be strong role models demonstrating ethical and responsible behaviour whilst guiding, mentoring, encouraging and challenging students. At times students are unable to manage their behaviour in an acceptable manner. When this happens the College works in partnership with parents. There is a clearly defined process with increasingly serious consequences alongside a system of specific interventions. The result is a balanced approach of both discipline and grace. This approach encourages students to restore broken relationships whilst acknowledging and accepting a cumulative system of consequences for their behaviour.

3 The Student Management System is broken down into three categories: 1. INSIDE the classroom 2. OUTSIDE the classroom 3. INFRINGEMENTS INSIDE Any seen or perceived disruptive behaviour is dealt with in the following way. Without a fuss or necessarily a verbal exchange, the teacher 1) writes the name of the disruptive student on the whiteboard. This is the student s first warning. Further disruption by the same student will result in (2) a cross being placed next t to their name. This is the second warning. Any further disruption from the same student and they are sent (3) sent to the office. All names are taken off the board after recess, lunch and at the end of the day. Send outs are counted for two consecutive terms. Examples of behaviour that may warrant a name on the board include: Distracting behaviour Talking/singing/making noises Walking around the room Swinging on the chair Calling out Distracting another student Interfering with another student s work Being disrespectful/rude to a staff member or another student Name-calling Putting another student down Speaking rudely to a teacher Making inappropriate comments Automatic Send Outs Examples of automatic send outs: Breach of Safety Throwing an object in class Intentionally pushing/knocking a student off a chair Not following safety guidelines in practical lessons Physical Abuse or Verbal Abuse Hitting, kicking or punching another student Swearing at another student or teacher

4 Misuse of Computers or Other Equipment Changing settings of classroom, lab or library computers Accessing or attempting to access inappropriate material via the internet Attempting to access restricted areas on the College computer network Intentional misuse of equipment provided during a lesson Using a mobile phone in class including texting, checking the time, receiving calls, texts or reminders Using an electronic device (ipod etc.) in class without permission. Stealing and physical abuse of a teacher Stealing is considered a serious inside send out. This procedure will be take place from Year 3. The first send out a student will receive a verbal warning, a letter sent home and a parent interview is requested. The second send out a student will receive an out-of-school suspension, a letter home and a parent interview is requested by the Principal. The third send out the student is withdrawn or excluded from the school. A student may be immediately excluded for abusing a teacher. This decision will be at the discretion of the Leadership. When a student is sent out: 1. The student is sent to the Student Services Office. The student must come directly to the office. 2. On arrival at the office, the student must inform the receptionist that they have been sent out and give their Send-out behavioural report form to the office staff. 3. The student must sit and wait quietly to be seen by the Head of Primary or Assistant Head of Primary. A student sent out of class eight times within two consecutive terms will be permanently withdrawn or excluded from attending Cornerstone Christian College.

Formal letter sent home to parents indicating that the student has been sent out of class on two occasions. A parent interview is requested. The student may be given an appointment with the school chaplain at the discretion of the leadership. In-school suspension separate recess/lunch breaks no contact with students. 6 OUTSIDE The system for dealing with inappropriate behaviour outside the class operates differently from the inside system. Students can receive a light, moderate or severe outside offence. Some incidents will result in an immediate suspension or even exclusion from the College for behaving in an inappropriate manner outside of class. An outside offence could be issued before school, at recess or lunch, outside College grounds whilst in College uniform or through involvement in social media. Light Dealt with by the teacher at the time of the offence. Moderate Each time a student receives a moderate outside offence, they are sent to the office and their name is recorded. Students will be given four chances to correct their behaviour. On the fourth (9 th, 14 th, 19 th and 24 th ) moderate outside offence parents will receive a letter listing the offences. On the fifth (moderate) outside offence students are suspended from school for a full day. At each suspension (5th offence, 10th offence, 15th offence, and 20th offence) a parent interview will be requested. On the fourth suspension a parent interview with the principal will be requested. If a student repeats this suspension procedure five times in one year they are permanently excluded from the College. Examples of Moderate offences General inappropriate behaviour rude/disobedient/dangerous Examples: Swearing at another student or teacher Rough play Disregarding the instruction of a teacher Running on path Playing in the toilets Severe Each time a student commits a severe outside offence, they are suspended from school for a full day. One severe offence is the equivalent of five moderate offences. For example, a student who has four moderate offences recorded will jump to nine if a severe offence is committed. If a student is suspended five times in two consecutive terms for any reason, they are permanently excluded from the College.

7 Exclusion A student could be immediately excluded from the College on the first serious offence in relation to physical abuse, bringing a weapon to school, substance abuse (tobacco/drugs/alcohol) and sexual abuse. Examples of severe offences or immediate exclusion Anti-social behaviour Examples: Graffiti Vandalism Fighting Truancy Drugs Stealing Drugs Alcohol

8 INFRINGEMENTS Students are permitted to record a total of 24 infringements during two consecutive terms. At 25 infringements, the student will be excluded from the College. 5th infringement: letter sent home. 9 th infringement: letter sent home 10th infringement: letter sent home, parents asked to attend an interview. 14 th infringement letter sent home. 15th infringement: letter sent home, student receives an out-of-school suspension, parent interview requested. 19 th infringement: letter home. 20th infringement: letter sent home, student receives an out-of-school suspension, parent interview with the principal requested. 21 st 24 th infringement: letter home. 25th infringement: student is withdrawn from the College. Examples of Infringements Educational: Late to class with no note Homework/assignments not done Not bringing appropriate equipment to class Writing/reading notes in class Image of the College: Make-up Jewellery Nail polish Hair Wearing the uniform incorrectly or the wrong uniform Shirt untucked Dress length No College hat Chewing gum Being in an area that is out of bounds Littering/throwing food Swearing (swearing at somebody will result in a send out or moderate offence)
