1 The room thermostat application module is placed on a flush-mounted bus coupler. The room thermostat is used for regulating the temperature in individual rooms.the required set temperature can be assigned parameters using the ETS software. In addition the user can adjust the set temperature using a rotary switch and can toggle between comfort and standby mode using an integrated presence switch. The current mode of operation (comfort mode, standby mode, night operation) is displayed by three green LEDs. The frost or heat protection is shown by a red LED while a yellow LED displays the frost alarm. In addition a cover frame in the chosen colour and a flush-mounted bus coupler are required. Note: the position of the PCI is rotated by about 90. Therefore you have to rotate the bus coupling units by about 90. 3 Continuous/Switch Heat Cool /2 Selection in ETS2 ABB Heating Thermostat The application program makes it possible to have individual room temperature control. The room thermostat can be adapted to various heating and/or cooling appliances by selecting appropriate parameter settings. The thermostat has five operating modes which are each assigned a separate setpoint value in heating/cooling mode. The states are displayed by LEDs on the device. The status of the communication objects Comfort mode, Night operation, Frost/heat protection, Dewpoint mode and Push button determines the active operating mode. It is possible to switch to comfort mode using the presence switch located on the device. The presence switch can also be addressed via the bus and the 1 bit object Push button is available for this purpose. It can also simultaneously send the status of the push buttons to the bus. Caution: If the Push button object and the presence switch are operated at the same time (within approx. 2 s), the push button changes the object value that has just been received. Continuous / Switch Using the parameter Type of heat function or Type of cooling function, it it possible to adapt the internal calculation and output of the control values to the properties of the room and the possible heating or cooling appliances. The parameter has four options: continuous PI control: The control value is determined internally according to a PI algorithm and output via a 1 byte communication object. It is therefore possible for example for electromotive control valves to be addressed in a range between 0 (= 0% = valve closed) and 255 (= 100% = valve fully opened). PWM control: The control value is determined internally according to a PI algorithm and output via a 1 byte communication object. It is therefore possible for example to address electrothermal control valves via switch actuators. The room thermostat operates with pulse width modulation so that the heat output can be set to intermediate values. It is therefore necessary to parameterise the period for the switching cycle of the control values. With a preset cyclic time of 15 minutes (90 * 10 seconds), a control value of 33.3% which has been determined internally means that the valve is opened for 5 minutes and closed for 10 minutes. switching two-step control: The control value is determined internally according to a two-step algorithm with an adjustable hysteresis and output via a 1 bit communication object. It is therefore possible for example for electrothermal control valves to be addressed via switch actuators. The heating valve is closed if the setpoint value is exceeded. If the room thermostat falls below the setpoint value minus the hysteresis, the heating valve is opened. continuous two-step control: The control value is determined internally according to a two-step algorithm with an adjustable hysteresis and output via a 1 byte communication object. It is therefore possible for example to address electromotive control valves. In this case, the room thermostat only sends the values 0 (= 0% = valve closed) and 255 (= 100% = valve fully opened). Heat Cool With the parameter Activation of heat/ cool function, it is determined whether the room thermostat controls heating and/or cooling appliances. There are five different settings available: heat, cool, heat and cool, 2-step heat and 2-step cool. The settings 2-step heat and 2-step cool are used if a relatively slow basic system is to be combined with a faster additional system. An example of this is floor heating as a basic system and warm water heating as an additional system. If there is a substantial system deviation, the additional system helps to correct this deviation as quickly as possible. In the event of a minor system deviation, only the basic system is used July 2000

4 There are various predefined appliances available for selection for the heat function (e.g. warm water heating, floor heating, air convector, electric heating). These settings normally suffice. Should these appliances however not be sufficient for adapting the control system to the heating system, it is also possible to carry out this adjustment via the control parameter. Only in special cases should detailed control parameters be selected after an exact investigation of the controlled variables in the room. The parameters Proportional range for heating and Readjust time for heating should be set individually. The control system can be deactivated for the investigation of these controlled variables. There are also predefined appliances available for the cooling function (e.g. cooling ceiling, air convector, SplitUnit). In special cases, it is also possible to adapt the control system via the control parameters. The room thermostat has parameterisable setpoint values. The base setpoint is preset to 21 C but can be changed if required (7 40 C). The parameters Standby mode, Night operation and Frost/heat protection for the various operating modes can then be set in relation to the base setpoint. In the heat and cool operating mode, the room thermostat uses the parameter Insensitive zone between heat and cool. This prevents the thermostat from switching between heat and cool too frequently. In the settings 2-step heat or 2-step cool, the parameter Distance from basic to additional system is used to prevent the thermostat from toggling. Object no. 3 has the highest priority. The thermostat is always inactive if the value of the object is logic 1. If communication objects no. 0 to 3 have the value 0, the thermostat operates in standby mode. If both object no. 0 Comfort mode and object no. 1 Night operation have the value 1, the comfort mode takes priority. It is possible to adjust the influence of the potentiometer that is attached to the thermostat using the parameter Scaling of setpoint adjustment button. The available settings lie in a range between +/- 0K (= disabled) and +/- 10K. If required, the setpoint can also be set as a 2 byte value using object no. 10. The value is stored in the EEPROM of the bus coupler. Frequent changes (more than 1-2 times a day) are not recommended as the EEPROM memory only permits a certain number of modifications. From standby mode or night operation, it is possible to switch to comfort mode using the presence switch for the set extended comfort period. Once this period has elapsed, the device returns to the original operation mode. It is also possible to deactivate the presence switch to prevent unauthorised persons from operating it. This is a good idea for example in public buildings and schools. If the operation mode has been changed to standby mode, it is a good idea to predefine the behaviour of the presence switch. For this reason, the room thermostat has the parameters Function of push button status if. It is possible to set here whether the push button status should be deleted or recreated (night object is set to 0) or unchanged (comfort object is set to 0). If object no. 3 has the value 0 and object no. 2 has the value 1, the thermostat is always set to the Frost/heat protection operating mode. It is a good idea for the frost/heat protection object to be influenced by a window contact (via a binary input). As soon as the window is opened, the room temperature is lowered for example to 7 C (for heating).. July

5 In addition to controlling heating or cooling appliances, the room thermostat can also output the current temperature. There is a 2 byte communication object available for this. In order for the room temperature to be output automatically, it is necessary to indicate the temperature change which should trigger the sending of a new temperature value. The selected value should not be too low to ensure that the bus load remains negligible. Any measurement errors that may occur e.g. due to the bus coupler heating up can be corrected using an adjustment value. The output of the control value is carried out if it has changed by a specific percentage value. In addition, it can also be necessary for certain actuators to send the control value cyclically. The cyclic time that is to be set depends on the monitoring period of the actuator. It can also be necessary for certain heating or cooling appliances to invert the output of the control value using the parameters Output of control value. Object no. 9 represents the internal control status of the room thermostat. In the basic setting, it is a 1 byte object and displays the following states bit by bit: bit 0: Comfort bit 1: Standby bit 2: Night bit 3: Frost/heat protection bit 4: Dewpoint bit 5: Heat/cool bit 6: Controller OFF bit 7: Frost alarm If required, it is possible to select one of the states using the parameter Meaning of object status.
