2 Schemes of Work These schemes of work are neither prescriptive nor exhaustive. The structure and organisation of schemes of work should reflect the needs of candidates and the particular approaches favoured by different institutions. Although the duration of schemes of work have been indicated in weeks these are approximations and, work for the may continue throughout the AS course. The examples listed below are included to assist centres in their planning. Example 1: Art, Craft and Design Coursework A scheme of work which starts with an introductory course encouraging candidates to work in different media. 6 weeks Sketchbooks are used by candidates to record aspects of their lives and surroundings. They are encouraged to record their experiences in different ways, using a variety of media. They can also include photographs. 12 weeks Candidates gather critical/contextual material related to their theme(s) in a sketchbook, they also access appropriate Internet sites. This is mainly a taught course aimed at laying the foundations for future developments. Candidates are introduced to a number of different ways of working including: learning about the importance of sketchbooks for researching and developing ideas learning about how to use a range of materials and techniques effectively and safely learning how to use a digital camera, scanner and computer programmes for manipulating images and accessing useful Internet sites learning about how to select and present images effectively. Candidates are provided with a number of themes by the centre. They select one or two themes from which they develop work using different media. Candidates choose to adopt one of two approaches, they can either: develop work for a single project using two or more media OR develop two separate projects using different media. Contents Candidates include two projects demonstrating their use of different media. Alternatively: Candidates can include a single project with additional work demonstrating their use of different media carried out during the introductory course. klm Copyright 2008 AQA and its licensors. 3 Example 2: Art, Craft and Design Coursework In this example candidates undertake a course aimed at introducing them to a range of media and approaches based around the theme of the environment. 18 weeks Media-based course In a teacher-led course candidates are introduced to a number of different media and techniques based on the following areas of study: painting and drawing printmaking three-dimensional media digital media Candidates are expected to keep a workbook which includes drawings, colour studies, digital images and information about the work of artists, designers and craftspeople A Project on the Environment Candidates are introduced to the project in a number of ways which might include: they meet a local planner who explains how decisions are made about urban and rural developments and the influence of the general public on these decisions they are made aware of different architectural styles they are introduced to a number of relevant websites they are introduced to different ways of recording aspects of the environment through drawing, photography (including digital images), video and by making written notes they are taken on a carefully-prepared town walk they make observational studies of their environment both in school and at home. The candidates are then able to choose from a number of themes related to the environment including: contrasting shapes, forms and structures regeneration contrasting architectural styles. Candidates are able to develop their work either through painting and drawing, video, photography or three-dimensional media. Candidates may select a number of examples of work from their mediabased course to exemplify breadth of study. 4 Example 3: Art, Craft and Design Coursework A broad based scheme of work aimed at providing opportunities for both expressive and design-based work. 18 weeks Project 1 Candidates keep sketchbooks to record observations and studies of work by artists and designers who have explored related themes. This unit is based on observations of the contrasting qualities of natural and manufactured forms. Emphasis is placed on the importance of drawing as a means of recording information in a variety of ways, from making preliminary studies to finished working drawings. The work is placed in context by looking at and making studies of examples of still-life groups from different periods. Each candidate studies at least two different approaches. Candidates then develop a number of ideas and finally produce finished work in paint, collage or mixed media. Project 2 This unit involves working from a specific design brief. Candidates visit a local shopping mall. They have to make studies and take photographs of fast-food outlets. They explore a range of options for redesigning one of the outlets. Part of their research involves using the Internet to look at corporate images used by well-known companies. Finally, candidates produce their own designs for the façade and menus of their chosen outlet. Candidates produce work for their portfolio this includes two projects with related work in sketchbooks, on mounted sheets and final realisations. klm Copyright 2008 AQA and its licensors. 5 Example 4: Fine Art Coursework In this scheme of work essential skills to enable candidates to research and develop ideas in an independent way form the foundation for later work. Term 1 Introductory Course Candidates are introduced to aspects of the course including: learning how to structure and organise sketchbooks learning about different ways of researching and investigating ideas through drawing, colour studies, photography and note taking learning how to handle a range of two- and three-dimensional media for developing ideas learning effective ways of using critical/ contextual materials exploring different ways of supporting work through the use of ICT. learning how to use video to enhance their work. learning about different ways of analysing and responding to works of art and design learning how to organise and present work effectively. Examples of work selected from the introductory course are included which exemplify the development of particular skills. Individual Projects In this project candidates are given a number of options including: producing work based on their response to a personal issue, interest or concern developing ideas explored in their sketchbooks developing work in response to a theme provided by teaching staff. The use of ICT for research and developing ideas is encouraged. Candidates include a single project which reflects a sustained and in-depth period of study. 4 Copyright 2008 AQA and its licensors. 6 Example 5: Fine Art Coursework In this scheme of work candidates undertake two separate projects and include additional work from a life drawing course in their portfolios. 18 weeks Project 1 Candidates prepare a workbook which includes examples of observational studies and critical/contextual material Candidates are asked to respond to the theme of Close-ups. They carry out research in school, at home and on a visit to a local town centre. They study how artists, photographers and film makers have used close-ups in their work. Candidates finally develop and produce work in a choice of media, including: painting and mixed-media video three-dimensional constructions. Project 2 Candidates undertake a series of classes in various aspects of life drawings Candidates compile a collection of studies of people in their sketchbooks. They are asked to focus on specific themes including: moving figures figures in groups figures relaxing. A range of approaches are encouraged from the naturalistic to the abstract. Candidates are encouraged to look at related work by other artists in a local gallery and on the Internet. Candidates include examples of life drawing selected from the life-drawing course. 7 Example 6: Photography Coursework This includes examples of techniques and processes, critical/contextual material and project work. 18 weeks Introductory Course Candidates are introduced to the basics of photography including: the use of cameras, film, lenses, filters and lighting darkroom techniques, developing, printing, presentation, layout and mounting safe working practices aspects of ICT including using the Internet, scanning, manipulating images and using digital cameras accessing relevant critical/contextual material and developing critical language Through a series of exercises they learn about: viewpoints, composition, depth of field and capturing movement the importance of colour, tone, shape, texture, pattern and form. Candidates begin to compile a journal which contains technical and critical/contextual materials Documentary Photography Project Candidates undertake research into the relationship between people and different environments, considering the impact that particular situations, lighting and colour can have in creating atmosphere and mood. They develop their own ideas for work based on their observations. Candidates choose to work from one of the themes listed below: homelessness families people at work. They produce a photographic essay or video based on their observations. Preparatory work is kept in their journal and on mounted sheets. In their workbooks candidates include critical/contextual examples related to their chosen theme by photographers, such as Paul Strand and Henri Cartier-Bresson and video and film makers, such as Sam Taylor-Wood. They also include reports on visits to photographic exhibitions. Thematic Project Candidates respond to the theme of Growth and Decay from a personal perspective, developing work from various sources, such as still-life groups, rural and urban environments and contrasting images of the young and elderly. 8 Example 7: Textile Design Coursework This represents one approach to Textile Design. Candidates are introduced to different Textile techniques. They attend a workshop with a textile designer and produce work based on observations of organic objects and explore a theme related to a particular culture. They have opportunities to produce two projects or develop one in greater depth. 9 weeks Introductory Project based on the exploration of colour and form Candidates learn different techniques, how to develop sketchbooks and mood boards. They also learn about interesting ways of incorporating critical/contextual materials. Candidates explore the nature of organic objects through drawing and colour studies. They experiment with dyes and produce textile constructions based on their observations. 9 weeks Project based on the study of Islamic design A one-day workshop with a textile artist, who makes objects using wrapped and tied materials, results in candidates exploring similar techniques. Candidates investigate the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople who have worked in similar ways. Additional materials produced during the workshop are included. The unit of work involves candidates researching Islamic design following a visit to a local Mosque, through the Internet and in the school library. Notes, drawings and colour studies are kept in a sketchbook. Candidates make use of computers for developing a range of ideas and experimenting with different colour combinations. Final designs are developed as printed fabrics. Candidates submit two projects based on the themes of Organic Objects and Islamic Design which include mounted sheets, mood boards and sketchbooks as well as finished work. klm Copyright 2008 AQA and its licensors. 9 Example 8: Three-Dimensional Design Coursework This represents one approach to the Three-Dimensional Design specification. 9 weeks A project based on Aztec design Candidates are introduced to ways of effectively producing a sketchbook. They learn about a range different approaches and techniques including ways of effectively including critical /contextual materials. On a visit to a local museum candidates document examples of Aztec design. Candidates are introduced to different aspects of three-dimensional design. Their first task is to create a container which has been influenced by Aztec design. They produce a series of alternative designs before constructing their final work. Preparatory work is carried out in a sketchbook, which is used throughout the course for researching and developing ideas and studying critical/ contextual material. 9 weeks A project based on designing a sculpture to be located in a civic centre Candidates visit a local civic centre. They make drawings, take photographs and digital images of the area, at different times, observing the way that light works within the space. They develop ideas for a sculpture which is designed to provide a focal point. Finally, they produce a scale model of their sculpture. They might use a computer simulation to demonstrate how their sculpture would look in a specific location from different viewpoints. 10 Example 9: Graphic Communication Coursework This represents one approach to Graphic Communication. 9 weeks Introductory Course Candidates are introduced to the main conventions used in graphic design. They are introduced to appropriate graphic software and learn about how to present their work in an appropriate form. A project based on developing a corporate image for a restaurant selling Turkish food Candidates research local restaurants considering factors, such as different letter forms, images, colours and textures. They make drawings and take photographs and/or video footage. They also investigate the foods and images related to aspects of Turkish culture. Following this they develop design ideas, exploring a variety of alternatives using appropriate software to assist in the process. Candidates then develop designs for the restaurant s façade and menus, and produce a mock up of the interior to scale. Finally, they explore different ways of presenting their work and engage in discussion with staff and other candidates about it. These discussions are recorded on tape and in written form. 9 weeks A project based on package design Candidates investigate examples of contemporary and past package design making drawings, colour studies and taking photographs. They consider carefully the relationship between the package, the product it contains and the consumer. Candidates are provided with a list of products from which they select one. This forms the basis of their design work. They research appropriate examples and develop their own designs. This involves making use of computer-generated images of three-dimensional forms and the construction of a number of mock-ups, considering factors, such as appearance and ease of construction. Finally they produce a finished package and write an evaluation of its effectiveness in meeting the requirements set out in the original brief. Additional materials from the introductory course might be included.
