Quick notes: If you have got a 32-bit version of a previous version of Windows, you need to upgrade to the 32-bit version of Windows 7 to be able to do an In-Place Upgrade. 30 Deal with device drivers Drivers are those small files that are typically hidden away that actually drive the devices you connect to your computer. For example, when you plug in a digital camera, a driver is necessary to make that device work on your computer Install automatically drivers in Windows 7 In Windows 7, when new devices are connected to the PC the first time, the drivers typically are found and installed Connecting a digital camera in Windows 7 Typical devices might be connected to the computer include printers and scanners, cameras, video cameras, mass storage devices and so on. However, depending on which devices are connected in Windows 7, the AutoPlay Dialog Box will pop up with different options Last Edited:
Manage the device drivers Device Manager is used to view a list of hardware devices installed on the computer, set properties for each device, update installed drivers or remove them Click Start button Type device in the Search box and click on Device Manager under Control Panel section The Device Manager window is displayed Select a device by click on the little triangles next to each catalogue of device type to expand the list Last Edited:
To view options of selected device driver, go to File Options To update the driver software or uninstall the driver, go to Actions select Update Driver Software or Uninstall option To see properties of the selected device, right click on the selected device and choose Properties from the shortcut menu to see information and options about the device as well as its driver under tabs in Device Properties windows Last Edited:
Under the Driver tab, there are some options: Driver Details Update Driver Disable Uninstall There are some other common options can be found from the shortcut menu such as: Update Driver Software Disable Uninstall Scan for hardware changes Last Edited:
Update Driver Software Select Update Driver Software option either from the Action drop down list or from the shortcut menu of the device The Update Driver Software Wizard is displayed, select one of two options to search for updated drivers Search automatically for updated driver software this option requires Internet connection (recommended) Browse my computer for driver software this option will allow user to browse the computer for the updated software and do it manually Quick notes: Some devices, for example an old MP3 player, would not be recognized in Windows XP and Windows Vista. After they are plugged in Windows 7, a window will pop up to indicate there might be a problem with some of the files on the device even though the device drivers were found and the software installed successfully. In this case, you choose one of the following options: Scan and fix option Continue without scanning Because some really old devices have drivers that can t be found after the device was plugged into the computer, you need to go to the manufacturer s website to try to find the driver, download it and install it Last Edited:
Run a Windows XP program in Windows 7 Many people do not want to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista or Windows 7 because some of their older XP programs can t run in these new Windows versions. However, Microsoft builds on virtual PC with XP Mode to resolve this issue and this new and powerful feature, included the virtual PC based, virtual environment and fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3, can be downloaded as a free download from Microsoft website Understand how Windows XP Mode works Using Windows XP Mode, you can run programs that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions Windows XP Mode works in two ways both as a virtual operating system and as a way to open programs within Windows 7. Windows XP Mode runs in a separate window on the Windows 7 desktop, much like a program, except it's a fully functional version of Windows XP. In Windows XP Mode, you can access your physical computer's CD/DVD drive, install programs, save files, and perform other tasks as if you were using a computer running Windows XP. When you install a program in Windows XP Mode, the program appears in both the Windows XP Mode list of programs and in the Windows 7 list of programs, so you can open the program directly from Windows 7. Programs installed in Windows XP Mode in the Windows 7 Start menu (Sources: Microsoft - Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 ) Notes: Almost all programs compatible with Windows Vista, and the majority of Windows XP programs, Run well in Windows 7. If a program doesn't, first try the Program Compatibility Last Edited:
troubleshooter. It can fix several problems and is included in all editions of Windows 7 Click the Start button Click Control Panel In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting Under Programs, click Run programs made for previous versions of Windows Some hardware and devices that work in Windows 7 might not work in Windows XP Mode. They might not be detected in Windows XP Mode. If you're playing music or video in Windows XP Mode using Windows Media Player, and you maximize or minimize the Windows XP Mode window, Windows Media Player will stop playing. This is due to the way Windows XP Mode works in Windows 7. To resume playback, click the Play button in Windows Media Player. Before download Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC In order to use Windows XP Mode, it s necessary to make sure that the computer meets certain system requirements. Otherwise, Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode will not work correctly even though the program might be able to be downloaded and installed. To determine whether the PC supports hardware virtualization, download and rin the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool Go to Download and run the application called havdetectiontool.exe Last Edited:
After you run the application, a window will pop up to indicate if the PC has a CPU that will have the support for hardware virtualization If you receive the message This computer does not have hardware-assisted virtualization, your computer does not meet the hardware requirement for Windows Virtual PC but you can still use Windows 7 XP mode by running the hotfix from Microsoft Support Center. Be aware that XP Mode will Run much better if hardware-assisted virtualization can be enabled. For more details about the hotfix, go to US; If you receive the message Hardware-assisted virtualization is not enabled on this computer, you need to follow the instruction to turn on hardware virtualization in your PC BIOS which are specific to OEM models. For more details about manually configuring BIOS settings, go to and scroll down to Step 2 If you receive the message This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization, you can download and install Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC Last Edited:
Download and install Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC Go to Select the following options: Which edition of Windows 7 installed in the computer from the drop down list of Select system Which desired language for Windows XP Mode language from the drop down list of Select language Last Edited:
Scroll down to Download and install Windows XP Mode section and follow steps below that section to download and follow the prompts to get it installed After the application was installed, do the following to run the application Click the Start button Go to All Program Click Windows Virtual PC folder and select Windows XP Mode Last Edited:
The setup program will run if it s the first-time run A separate window of Windows XP desktop is displayed on Windows 7 desktop and this window can be resized as well as move around Last Edited:
