5 Introduction About Performance Analysis Agent This document provides an overview and operating instructions for Performance Analysis for SQL Server agent Silent Installer tool. Target Audience The Silent Installer tool is intended to be used by customers deploying a large quantity of Performance Analysis agents. These customers should previously be acquainted with Performance Analysis agent installation and its requirements. The Silent Installer is designed to allow Database Administrator (DBA) to perform numerous Performance Analysis agent installations across large sites in a batch mode, reby saving effort and time required to interactively install each agent separately. It is advisable to consult hardware guidelines and considerations document prior to deciding on installation architecture and middle-tier computer hardware. 6 2 Performance Analysis for SQL Server 6.5 Silent Installer User Guide What is Silent Installer The Silent Installer is a tool for installing Performance Analysis agent in a batch mode. This tool uses a and command line parameters in order to select input required for installation. For a full list of available variables accepted by Silent Installer, see section Input Parameters for Silent Installer on page 8. When to use Silent Installer The Silent Installer should be used by customers in any of following scenarios: Deployment of multiple Performance Analysis agents using single-tier architecture to multiple SQL Server Hosts whereby all agents are using similar configuration. Deployment of multiple Performance Analysis agents using multi-tier configuration whereas all agents are employing a common shared Middleware and are using similar configuration.

7 Before You Begin Before installing Performance Analysis agent, verify that following prerequisites are met. These prerequisites also apply for each instance installed using Silent Installer. te For single-tier installations, all prerequisites apply to SQL Server Host. Prerequisites for Installing Performance Analysis Agent General The following list summarizes prerequisites for installing Performance Analysis agent. These prerequisites also apply for each instance installed using Silent Installer. Verify that your SQL Server version is supported. Verify that your operating system is supported. Select agent architecture that best matches your business needs (Single-Tier vs. Multi-Tier) Ensure that all Hosts and Clients involved in installation are visible to one anor through network. Verify that agent communication port is not being used by anor program or Performance Analysis agent instance. If repository component is being installed, prepare two tablespaces on monitored instance as follows: Data tablespace with Mb of free space.

If repository component is being installed on a new repository prepare two tablespaces on repository instance as follows: Data tablespace with 1200Mb of free space. Index tablespace with 1000Mb of free space. te 500 MB of free space are required for each agent employing performance repository. In Active/Passive Cluster environments, run agent installation wizard on shared disk. The agent should be installed only once per SQL Server instance. SQL Server Host Ensure that logged-on Windows domain user account (running agent installation wizard) has local Windows Administrator privileges on SQL Server host as well as write privileges to target agent installation directory. Verify that target installation directory has at least 300 MB of free disk space for a multi-tier installation or 2 GB of disk space for a single-tier installation. Depending on your network naming policy, identify SQL Server host s name or IP address (depending on your network policy). Monitored Instance Verify that user is a member of SYSADMIN fixed server role. Verify that monitored instance is running. Middle-tier Host Ensure that logged-on Windows domain user account has local Windows Administrator privileges on middle-tier host as well as write privileges to target agent installation directory. Depending on your network policy, identify middle-tier host s name or IP address. Verify that target installation directory has at least 2 GB of free disk space for each SQL Server instance monitored by this middleware (for example: for a single instance reserve 2GB or for two instances reserve 4GB).

9 5 Ensure that Client logged-on Windows domain user account (from which installation is initiated) has local Administrator privileges on middle-tier host and write privileges to installation directory. Ensure that host name or IP address of middle-tier host is known. Verify that target installation directory has at least 2 GB of free disk space. te It is recommended to reserve additional space beyond initial planning to allow future growth.

10 6 Performance Analysis for SQL Server 6.5 Silent Installer User Guide Preparations Prior to Using Silent Installer To use Silent Installer, following preparations should be taken: 1 Use Performance Analysis agent installer to perform an interactive installation using architecture and configuration options that you would like to replicate to subsequent agent installations. The installation PA_Summary_install.cfg will be automatically generated by interactive installer and will record all configuration and selections made during installation process. The will be generated at directory <installer_running_directory>/pa_logs.<unique Id>/ PA_Summary_Install.cfg 2 Place following content in an empty directory, from which you will run Silent Installer: Content of zipped archive - silent_install_<platform>.tgz Performance Analysis agent for SQL Server Installer - for example for Windows platform: D_PASS_Agent_6_X_XX_Windows_x86.exe Installation generated from interactive installation detailed in step 1 - PA_Summary_install.cfg 3 Prepare a list with values for silent installation parameters that you want to use (for a complete list, see section Input Parameters for Silent Installer, on page 8). The Silent Installer will use input parameters specified in command line to install Performance Analysis agent. Any unspecified parameter will be defaulted to value, specified in previously executed interactive installation.

11 Executing Silent Installer Ensure that you have followed preparations for using Silent Installer stated in section Preparations Prior to Using Silent Installer, on page 6. te For single-tier installations, all prerequisites apply to SQL server Host. The next section contains a list of available input parameters that can be passed to Silent Installer program. Please note that only mandatory parameters are server_arch which is used to select installed Performance Analysis agent architecture and mon_instance_name which is used to specify monitored SQL Server instance name.

16 12 Performance Analysis for SQL Server 6.5 Silent Installer User Guide Running Silent Installer 1 Follow all installation prerequisites as detailed in section Preparations Prior to Using Silent Installer, on page 6. 2 Follow all steps as detailed in section Preparations Prior to Using Silent Installer, on page 6. 3 Log in to target host operating system with an account that has administrator permissions on this machine. 4 Run silent_installer program (silent_installer.exe) from command console and specify parameters which should use a differing value from that which appears in. For example, specify monitored instance by adding parameter mon_instance_name. te Once installer starts executing, it will be non interactive as long as no problem occurs. If any issues occur during installation, it will hold and wait for user to issue correct input. Once input is provided, installation will return to silent mode.

17 Silent Installation Examples This section contains two examples of silent installation based on common use cases for Silent Installer. Agent Deployment Single-tier Deployment of Agent This scenario takes place when installing agent using single-tier configuration on multiple SQL Server server Hosts, which have been similarly configured. 1 Use interactive Performance Analysis agent installer on first SQL Server server Host. te that all settings provided to installer (such as directory names and database accounts) will be recorded in and used for subsequent installations. Ensure that all selections best serve common/global business needs. 2 For every subsequent SQL Server instance for which you would like to install agent, copy generated in step (1) to SQL Server server Host and run silent installer, changing only parameters which defer between computers. In most cases only agent architecture (for example, single-tier) and monitored instance's SID will have to be provided. For example running a silent installer on instance ORA10264: silent_installer.sh - server_arch single-tier -mon_instance_name ORA10264

18 14 Performance Analysis for SQL Server 6.5 Silent Installer User Guide Deployment of Multiple Performance Analysis Agents Employing a Shared Middleware 1 Install Middleware agent component interactively on middle-tier Host. 2 Select a SQL Server instance and install Performance Analysis agent collector component on corresponding SQL server Host providing Middleware component installed in step (1) as installation's middle-tier. te All settings provided to installer (such as directory names, database accounts, etc.) will be recorded in and will be used for subsequent installations, thus make sure that all selections best serve common/global business needs. 3 For every subsequent SQL Server instance for which agent should be installed, copy generated in step (2) to SQL server Host and run Silent Installer, specifying server_arch=collector_multi_tier to install a collector agent employing same Middleware. Specify parameters which defer between and current installation (for example monitored instance dba user account and password used to grant privileges to installation user). For example: silent_installer.sh -server_arch collector_multi_tier -mon_instance_name ORA mon_instance_dba_user sys -mon_instance_dba_password mypwd
