2 The American Academy of Forensic Sciences is pleased to present the 2012 Forensic Science Educational Conferences for Middle- and High School Teachers. FSEC - Helping bring forensic science to the classroom. In December 2000, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) was released comparing U.S. students with those of 41 other nations. At the end of 12 th grade, our students ranked among the very lowest in math and science of the 42 countries. Keenly aware of the deficiencies, middle and high school science teachers are seeking appropriate methods to improve science competence in students. With today s explosion of television programs and media coverage of the latest advancements in the forensic sciences, students have become fascinated with anything relating to the work of the forensic scientist. Wishing to foster a stronger interest in science learning among our nation s young people, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences now co-sponsors Forensic Science Educational Conferences. A limited number of scholarships are available to local area middle and high school teachers. To apply for a scholarship, complete the Scholarship Application Form and return with your registration. Roger Webb Forensic Science Institute Edmond, OK June 25-27, 2012 A full schedule of exciting, hands-on learning will be provided at the June 25-27, 2012 FSEC to be held at the University of Central Oklahoma campus in Edmond, Oklahoma. An array of forensic investigative science topics will be presented. Included will be an overview of basic crime scene procedures, laboratory exercises and instruction on wildlife forensics, digital evidence, chemistry and toxicology, anthropology, psychology, as well as DNA. Attendees will be able to choose among several tracks over the course of the three day workshop and will take with them a wealth of information and hands-on training experience for use in their own classrooms and laboratories. 4 University of Alabama at Birmingham Birmingham, AL July 11-13, 2012 This workshop promises a well rounded, hands-on look at forensic science. The July 11-13, 2012 FSEC will be hosted on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The workshop will focus on basic crime scene procedures and laboratory exercises, and attendees will be instructed on preparing and conducting forensic related laboratory investigations. Attendees will take with them a wealth of information and hands-on training experience for use in their own classrooms and laboratories. Jason Linville, PhD, Director of Graduate Studies in Forensic Science, serves as Conference Director. 5 San Jose State University San Jose, CA July 11-13, 2012 The American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and San Jose State University (SJSU), College of Applied Sciences and Arts, Forensic Science Program in the Department of Justice Studies will present a Forensic Science Educational Conference (FSEC) in San Jose, California, July 11-13, This three-day conference will include state-of-the-art presentations from forensic scientists from the AAFS disciplines with hands-on workshop activities. These will include take-home, classroom case modules in CSI evidence handling and processing, fingerprints, firearms, bloodstain pattern analysis, forensic DNA, forensic anthropology and facial reconstruction, and court testimony and ethics. Teachers will also exchange best practices and lesson plans during evening think tanks. Steven Lee, PhD, Director of the SJSU Forensic Science Program, serves as Conference Director. The August 7-9, 2012 FSEC will be hosted on the campus of Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The workshop will focus on basic crime scene procedures, laboratory exercises and instruction on fingerprint recovery, blood spatter analysis, and arson, along with current trends in profiling. In addition, attendees will be instructed on preparing and conducting forensic related laboratories. Attendees will take with them a wealth of information and hands-on training experience for use in their own classrooms and laboratories. Michael Cipoletti, Assistant Professor of Forensic Science, will serve as Conference Director.
