2 AGENDA SIGNATURES REQUIRED! All upper grade students are required to have their agenda signed by a parent or guardian at the beginning of each week. It is their responsibility to get the signature and remember to bring their agenda back to school. Students are not allowed to make phone calls for agendas, homework, or other items they are required to bring to school. Good Homework Habits are a stepping stone to success! Homework solutions that work Like an actor rehearsing his lines or a batter working on his swing, your child does homework to practice what he learns in school. And if he s like most youngsters, homework brings occasional challenges. Here are solutions to common problems he might face. Getting started When your child gets home from school or after-school care, he might want to relax for a little while or he may want to jump right in and work. Have him try each method for one week and keep track of how it goes. He could write notes in each day s calendar square. ( Went great! or Hard time getting started. ) After two weeks, he can review the notes to see which routine worked best. Staying motivated Academic Team Tryouts The 7th and 8th grade Academic Team Tryouts will be held Wednesday, August 24th from 3:30 to 4:30. The 5th and 6th grade and 3rd and 4th grade Academic Team tryouts will be held soon. Please stay tuned for an exact date and time! Academic Team Does your youngster ever feel restless when he s doing homework? Suggest that he get up and move to a new spot. For example, he might finish his vocabulary assignment at the kitchen table and then read his science chapter on the porch. A planned break, (say, to have a snack or take a walk) can also give him a second wind. Solving problems Help your child make a list of strategies he can use when he gets stuck. For a math assignment, he might try tools like a number line or find sample problems in his book. When he s reading, he could look up words in a dictionary or reread a paragraph. Tip: If he s still stumped, he might call a friend or write down his question to ask his teacher the next day Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated

3 BLUE AND GOLD SAUSAGE ON SALE NOW! If you have not already signed up to sell blue and gold sausage, you must complete the permission slip in order to participate. Blue and Gold will be on sale until Monday, August 29th. All orders and payment must be turned in at that time. Checks should be made payable to the Banner PTA. If you have questions, please contact Chrissy Marik at PTA ACTIVITIES: PTA MEETING MONDAY NIGHT, 8/22 AT 6:00 PM IN THE CAFETERIA. SKATE NIGHT! Free for all Banner Students. Additional skaters are $5 each and includes skate rental. Yukon on Wheels at Route 66 & Ranchwood. 6:30 pm concessions will be available. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and have a good time! The Boy Scouts of America will be meeting with all K 5th boys at a general assembly on Thursday, August 18th. If your student is interested in joining Boy Scouts, there will be a parent meeting at 3:30 on Friday, August 19th in the cafeteria.

4 Easy Fundraising opportunities for our school! Many fundraising opportunities require little effort if they are already things you purchase or use! Box Tops for Education: Many of the products you buy have box tops for education points and are worth a minimum of ten cents each! Please cut and save them as well as ask family, friends, and neighbors to save theirs! There are classroom competitions for each student s class. Be sure and label your Ziploc baggie with your students name and grade before sending them to school. Deadlines will be posted in the newsletter. SMART SAVER/BUY 4 LESS RECEIPTS: Beginning 9/1 we will be collecting cash register receipts from Smart Saver and Buy 4 Less stores. It doesn t matter how small or large your purchase (or how you pay for it), send us the tape and we will submit them! We receive gym equipment for our efforts. This is not a class competition. Collection runs from 9/1 to 3/31. MONTHLY RESTAURANT NIGHT: Each month there will be a different restaurant night for families to gather and visit. Restaurants donate a portion of the sales to the school. Stay tuned for the first restaurant night to be held in September! Check the calendar for your grades practice and game schedule. Practice starts today. Go to net to see more information on games and practices! Weekly Newsletter At the beginning of each week a newsletter highlighting the events and activities to come will be sent home with your student. The information is provided to you in order to alleviate any scheduling conflicts and allow parents ample opportunity to participate in the events available to their student. Many events will have deadlines and are posted both in the newsletter and on the calendar found on the school website. Communication Questions Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers: Q: How do I get ahold of my student s teacher? A: Teacher plan times and their addresses are listed on the school s website at Q: How can I get an Infinite Campus Parent Portal username and password to view my students cafeteria account, behavior, and grades? A: All parents are able to get a username and password by completing the application for an Infinite Campus Username (located on our website) and submitting it to the office. This is by far the best way to keep up with your students day to day activity at school.

5 Excellent Attendance Being in school every day means your child won t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If he asks to stay home just because, remind him of what he ll miss, such as his reading group or art class. Explain that he can be absent only if he s sick or if there s a family emergency Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated Please review the school s attendance policy in the Student Handbook to insure compliance with the attendance laws. School rules point us in the right direction! Student Handbook The Student Handbook is available online at our website All students are required to obtain their parent s signature and sign and return the signature page located on the last page of the handbook. Please go over the student handbook with your student and complete the signature form. If you student will be taking any medication (prescription or over the counter) at school or has any medical conditions, please complete the page 29 and return it to school. No medication will be administered with a verbal authorization. If you did not receive a hard copy of the student handbook, please send a request with your student s name and grade and we will print one out and send it home with your student. All students must have a signature page on file by Monday, August 22, 2016.

6 Transportation It is important to know that your student should be waiting outside, at their bus stop, approximately 5 minutes before their scheduled pick up time. Bus Riders: Contact Information Please text before 7:00 a.m. if your student will not be riding. If you are not a regular bus rider, please text your driver to insure they stop at your student s bus stop on days that your student needs picked up. Drivers cannot answer calls while they are driving the route between 7 and 8 am or 3:35 and 4:30 pm. Bus 1 - Miss Lori Bus 2 - Mr. Dennis CAR RIDERS: Pick up and Drop off Information Please review this information to help make traffic run smoothly and insure the safety of our students. All students being dropped off should be to the left of the yellow bus lane in front of the school. Please do not stop or park in the bus lane. PK 2nd grade students are picked up in the north parking lot. 3rd through 8th grade students are picked up in the south parking lot. Parents should not wait by the front door as this is for bus riders only. Please wait in your designated area to pick up your students (north or south).
