2 SCHOOLS: PARTNERS FOR THE FUTURE INITIATIVE - PASCH A global network of schools is being built through the PASCH partner school initiative. Pupils at these schools are not just given the opportunity to learn German and enjoy German education. This cultural relations initiative is designed to arouse a lasting interest in modern-day Germany and the German language in young people especially in the priority regions of Asia, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe. The Federal Foreign Office is responsible for coordinating PASCH, which is being implemented in cooperation with the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), the Goethe-Institut (GI), the Educational Exchange Service of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (PAD) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The partner school initiative has been quite a success: the network includes 1500 schools, about 1000 more than in Twenty-three German Schools abroad have joined, 430 additional schools are introducing the German language diploma, and another 509 new members of the network are introducing German as a foreign language or expanding their teaching of German. 3 MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR As the process of globalization expands its reach, education is crucial for meeting the requirements of all areas of modern life. The sooner we become aware of the benefits of an international learning community, the earlier we can meet modern day challenges. With the initiative Schools: Partners for the Future we aim at inspiring students at partner schools to learn the German language in an international environment, which has proven to be beneficial for developing tolerance and intercultural competence. As we praise the cultural diversity and tolerance of values, we want to create spaces where young people can interact in order to understand each other better, and where creativity and learning from each other is supported. Our partner schools in the Philippines and abroad have become such places and will continue to encourage students to take an active role in influencing intellectual environments. The Goethe-Institut supports its partner schools in introducing or further developing German as a teaching subject. It offers teachers of the initiative advanced methodological and didactic training and language courses, and it equips schools with up-to-date teaching materials. To continously support these activities, the Goethe- Institut provides teaching experts worldwide in order to assist its partner schools. 4 THE KEY ELEMENTS OF THE INITIATIVE TEACHER TRAINING CULTURAL EVENTS The Goethe-Institut has sent teaching experts to supervise partner schools throughout the world. Partner school teachers undergo training to improve their German language and teaching skills. The Goethe-Institut provides a vast array of cultural programs that range from regular exhibitions on German culture, film screenings to German festivals. All these programs are designed to motivate students to take an active role while engaging in contemporary German culture.

5 UP-TO-DATE TEACHING MATERIAL The Goethe-Institut provides modern, multi-media learning materials and background study material as well as technical support and assists the schools in ensuring highquality German language studies. PREPARE STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC STUDIES IN GERMANY The initiative supports students wishing to pursue academic studies in Germany by providing orientation programs and information on the German university system. The number of scholarships granted to students of partner schools has doubled in recent years.

6 What has been achieved in the Philippines? In March 2011, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Department of Education (BR. Armin A. Luistro FSC). As a result, 9 partner schools (public high schools) are offering German classes 680 students attend them. 36 English teachers have been attending a training program to become German teachers (8 of them are currently on a six-month immersion program in Germany). Ateneo High School and the German European School offer German (80 students in total). Both schools became partners via a separate MoU. Since 2008 every year, around 10 German students of partner schools have been provided a full scholarship for a three-week international youth camp in Germany. All schools are provided with up-to-date teaching materials. Regular events to promote German language and culture such as the Christmas Market at Ateneo de Manila High School, the exhibition Germany for Beginners at UST, the comic exhibit Comics, Manga & Co. at Arts in the City including workshops on comics, film screenings etc. A curriculum for German as a school subject has been proposed to DepEd.

7 What are the plans for the future? Continue teacher support with up-to-date teaching materials and regular trainings Establish German in the school curriculum from grade 7-12 (students reach B1 level with an internationally recognized exam, which enables them to take the university entry exam of all top-ranking German universities after another three-month language training) Establish the international teacher training program at Philippine universities of excellence ( Deutsch Lehren Lernen administered by one of Germany s top Universities - University of Giessen) to meet the demand for German teachers Create an Association of German teachers in the Philippines Deutsch- Philippinischer Lehrerverband Provide more information on the excellent and partially free study opportunities at top-ranking German universities Create a platform among the decision makers in the education system ( German Group ) which also enables international meetings for better understanding and exchange of ideas on how German can be promoted Raise public awareness of the benefits of learning foreign languages Promote German language and culture through sports, concerts and other cultural events, as well as student exchange programs

8 Why should students learn German? Business: Knowing the language of German business partners improves relations and therefore chances for effective communication and success. The global career: Knowledge of the German language increases job opportunities with foreign companies in the Philippines and abroad. Proficiency in German helps youth to function productively for an employer with global business connections. Tourism and hospitality industry: Tourists from German-speaking countries travel far and wide, and are the world s biggest spenders when on holiday. They appreciate to be looked after by German-speaking staff and tour guides. Science and Research: German is the second most commonly used scientific language. Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad. Opportunities to study/work in Germany: Germany awards a generous number of scholarships and other support to study in Germany. Working holiday visas are available for young foreigners from a range of countries, and special visas are offered to skilled workers and professionals. BPOs There is growing number of companies, in the call-center sector in particular, which are seeking German-speaking staff. German companies in the Philippines require employees with German language skills and insights into German culture. Schools and universities A number of education institutions has introduced German language programs and requires German teachers and lecturers. Employers abroad Currently, hospitals in Germany and Switzerland are looking for qualified German speaking staff from the Philippines.

9 Why should students consider Germany a destination for higher studies? 1. Germany offers a great variety of degree programs of high academic standards, cutting-edge technology and advanced research facilities. 2. Tuitions fees in Germany are a great deal more reasonable than in other countries. 3. An increasing number of international degree programs is partly or entirely taught in English. Students are not necessarily required to speak German in order to be qualified as university students in Germany; however, basic German is required. 5. The academic excellence of German universities and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) is convincing more and more students of high potential from all over the world. There are more than 18,000 international collaborations with almost 4,000 foreign institutions of higher education in 140 countries. 4. German universities offer diverse options - Germany is one of the leaders in the international competition for the world s best brains. 376 universities, universities of applied sciences, colleges of art, teacher training and theological colleges and specialist administrative colleges offer a huge range of subjects and courses.
