1 Spring, 2011 President's Message By Tammy French, UW-Whitewater In October of 2010, the Wisconsin Communication Association once again held its annual convention in association with the Business of Communication Association in Stevens Point. We continue to be delighted with the Wisconsin Statewide Communication Association Conference. Those of us who were fortunate to attend walked away energized by practical information in the presentations and educated by the plenary panel of professionals. I extend gratitude and congratulations to the previous president, Tricia Classen of UW Rock County, who graciously served for two years. Further, the conference is the gem it is because of the hard work of Wayne Sorenson, Kari Schultz, and the rest of the staff in the Continuing Education department at UW Stevens Point. The Wisconsin Statewide Communication Association s conference is unique. This intimate gathering of professionals invites collaboration and interaction. With a diverse audience of WCA and BCA members, local professionals, students, and K-12 educators, we still find that this conference offers more of a take away than many conferences we attend. We walk away ready to apply ideas to our classes and day to day work lives. It is that spirit that led to next year s convention theme, Listening to our Past...Speaking to our Future. We know that we need to learn from our past and understand the groundbreaking research and teaching of our predecessors, and at the same time we need to look forward and determine where and how we can carve our own legacy. In that regard, we are eager to hear from past WCA presidents and other communication historians who will offer their insights into where we ve been as a discipline and where we are headed. The next Statewide Communication conference will be held in Wisconsin Rapids at the historic Hotel Mead on Friday, October 7 th, We look forward to an opportunity to give participants something to take away from the conference. At the same time, we encourage you to consider what you might give in the exchange of ideas as you read through our call for panels and papers. Whether you d like to propose a panel idea yourself or offer suggestions to the planning committee, we welcome all suggestions. We will continue to work toward the goal of full inclusion of speech education in state standards. If you have suggestions on how best to accomplish that goal, please me and let me know what they are (frencht@uww.edu). Thank you for your support of the Wisconsin Communication Association. I look forward to seeing you in Wisconsin Rapids on October 7, Tammy French, President, Wisconsin Communication Association Spring 2011, p. 1
