PART A Signatory progress in reaching goals and targets of the Covenant This section refers to signatory progress against Covenant KPIs. The data from this section will be aggregated across all signatories on an annual basis, and will enable the APC to assess overall progress against Covenant Goals and KPIs, and those of its own Strategic Plan. You can include any particulars relevant to your sector in Part B. Please indicate your organisation s reporting period: Financial Year: 1 July June 2011 Calendar Year: 1 January December 2011 Goal 1: Design - optimise packaging to use resources efficiently and reduce environmental impact without compromising product quality and safety. KPI 1: % of signatories with documented policies and procedures for evaluating and procuring packaging using the SPG s or equivalent 1. Does your company have documented policies and procedures for evaluating and procuring packaging using the SPG s or equivalent? Definition of Packaging Type Reporting of the proportion of packaging reviewed using the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, whether existing or new, need not be individual SKU or products. Signatories can review and report on their review by grouping their packaging into different types if this is more effective and efficient. Grouping into types can be by individual products (SKU s), or by related packaging / products, e.g. by type of material used (paper/ cardboard, plastic, glass, metals...), by brands, by packaging manufacturer, or by some other category which makes sense in their own design and production processes. Reporting the number or percentage reviewed should be by Type as defined by each signatory s own practices, and each signatory is free to decide how to do this. A manufacturer with a small number of products might review each package independently, with each considered a unique type. A large manufacturer with many products may group them for review by looking at each material type, or may review each brand or range of products in turn, or may have different packaging suppliers and work with each in order. In both cases, the reporting should simply be by the types of packaging that have been reviewed. 2. Of the types of packaging existing at the beginning of the reporting period, what percentage had been reviewed using the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG) by the end of the reporting 0 % 3. Of the new types of packaging introduced during the reporting period, what percentage has been reviewed using the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG) by the end of the reporting 0 %
4. Describe (other?) outcomes achieved using the SPG in regard to: Please indicate even if you have done nothing in this area a) Avoiding or minimising the use of materials and other resources Harvey rman and its franchisees do not manufacture or distribute product into stores. Franchisees are therefore constained in their ability to influence packaging decisions made by supply chain partners. The scope for reducing packaging waste is therefore restricted. However, Harvey rman does intend to review suppliers to the Corporate Office. This review aims to identify how Harvey rman can avoid or minimise the use of material (and or resources) used in its Corporate Offices and if possible, in its stores. b) c) Optimising recyclability and recycled content outcomes to report for this period. Reducing litter impacts outcomes to report for this period. Goal 2: Recycling - efficiently collect and recycle packaging. KPI 3: % signatories applying on-site recovery systems for used packaging 5. Do you have on-site recovery systems for used packaging? at all facilities/ sites at some, but not all facilities/ sites 6. Describe what types of packaging materials are collected and recycled on-site Paper, Plastic, Cardboard, Printer Cartridges, Mattresses, Comingle Containers, Polystyrene, General Waste and Building Waste. 7. Actual: Describe what progress (since the beginning of the reporting period), if any, has been made in collecting and recycling materials on-site All Harvey rman sites now have recycling facilities installed for paper, plastic and cardboard and many now have bins for polystyrene. As a result, our percentage of waste diverted from landfill has increased. KPI 4: Signatories implement formal policy of buying packaging made from recycled products 8. Does your company have a formal policy of buying packaging made from recycled products? Goal 3: Product Stewardship - demonstrate commitment by all signatories KPI 6: % signatories with formal processes to work collaboratively on packaging design and / or recycling. 11. Does your company have formal processes in place for collaborating with other companies or organisations on improved packaging designs and/or recycling which aims to reduce or eliminate waste? KPI 7: % signatories showing other Product Stewardship outcomes 14. Since the beginning of the reporting period, has your company had any other outcomes related to product stewardship?
KPI 8: Reductions in packaging items in the litter stream 16. Briefly describe what measures, if any, have been implemented to reduce litter. The Harvey rman Franchisor recommends and conducts a 'Clean Up Your Store Day' event each year. Last year we held this in March. All stores participate by actively cleaning up and disposing of all litter and waste around their store and warehouse. General 17. Please provide details of any special circumstances or additional information that will help us interpret this report (you may include links to your website showing any case studies or relevant information). The Harvey rman franchise model in Australia is different to other major retailers operating in Australia. The key differentiation is that franchisees are independant business operators that have full autonomy and control over their day to day operations. Although the Franchisor regularly makes recommendaions, it is up to the Directors of the independant franchises to adopt and implement the recommended practices of the Franchisor. Overall the level of adoption is good across all franchisees and the Harvey rman Corporate Offices remain as being the area in which considerable goals can be achieved with regards to Harvey rman's reduce, reuse and recycle policy.
PART B Your annual performance This section will ask you for additional data on your progress made during this reporting period against the annual targets you have set for each of the Covenant KPIs. The data you provide in Part B will be used to determine your performance rating. Here we are looking at your achievements in changes to packaging outcomes rather than processes (e.g. 15 tonnes of material diverted from landfill rather than a process in place to investigate or actually divert waste from landfill). Please use this section to highlight any particulars that you think are relevant about your industry and sector and we will take this into account in the performance rating. Goal 1: Design KPI 1: % of signatories with documented policies and procedures for evaluating and procuring packaging using the SPG s or equivalent. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI Create a database of current suppliers which have a sustainability policy in place. Identify which of these suppliers are signatories to the APC. 2. Review signatories' action plans and annual reports in regards to their overall commitment to their own goals and achievement against APC criteria. 3. Suppliers who are non APC signatories are to also be reviewed in respect of their commitment to using environmentally responsible packaging. 4A. (Avoiding or minimising the use of materials and other resources). It is intended that Harvey rman will actively pursue an energy reduction strategy. 4B. (Optimising recyclability and recycled content). 1. Supplier list and cross reference to APC signatory database has not been completed. The timeline has now been extended to 31 December t completed. New timeline extended to 30 June t completed in this period until 1A and 1B are completed. 4A. outcomes to report for this period. 4B. actions or recordable data available for this period. 4C. actions or recordable data available for this period. 4C. (Reducing litter impacts)
Goal 2: Recycling KPI 3: % signatories applying on-site recovery systems for used packaging. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI Introduce plastic, glass, battery and aluminium recycling at stores and the corporate office. 2. Increase waste diverted from landfill. Target was to reach 25% of waste to be diverted from landfill. 3. Recommendation to stores to promote 'Cartridges for Planet Ark' and increase the number of stores providing on site collection bins for printing consumables. 4. Harvey rman stores to increase their mobile phone recycling rate. Introduce mobile phone recycling into Joyce Mayne and Domayne stores. 5. Reduction in degradable plastic bag usage across all stores. 6. Recommend to franchisees that a collection service for customers' disposed mattresses and white goods should be offered to customers. 70% of franchisees were targeted to have this initiative in place by December As at March 2012, plastic recycling facilities have been installed at the Corporate Offices. Glass and battery and aluminium recycling has yet to be implemented. 2. In 2010/ % of waste was diverted from landfill. 3. The majority of stores now have Planet Ark recycling bins installed and for the year 2010/ ,519 items were collected equating to 11.2 tonnes of waste. This was a 4.8% reduction in the number of items collected for this reporting period versus the previous period. 4. Harvey rman stores continued to support 'Mobile Muster' campaign for mobile phone recycling. Joyce Mayne and Domayne stores are yet to commence this initiative. However post this reporting period this initiative has ceased. There was no recordable data available for this reporting period. 5. A 26% reduction in plastic bag usage was reported in 2010/2011. (Previous year was 52 tonnes. This period, 38 tonnes were used). 6. Mattress and white goods recycling is still being recommended. This is still store by store and only applicable to 20% of locations locations. KPI 4: Signatories implement formal policy of buying packaging made from recycled products. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI As a priority Harvey rman's Online channel is to ensure that suppliers providing goods for the fulfillment of orders are to supply packaging made from recyled materials. 2. Harvey rman's procurement teams are to produce a policy of buying packaging made from recycled materials. This policy is to extend to all corporate office locations and also recommended to franchised stores. 1. All packaging used for the fulfillment of online orders are made from 100% recycled content. 2. The development of the 'buy packaging only made from recycled products' policy is ongoing.
Goal 3: Product Stewardship KPI 6: % signatories with formal processes to work collaboratively on packaging design and / or recycling. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI Integrate sustainability considerations into existing and new policies and procedures as they are introduced and or updated. 2. Recommend to franchisees that a product's packaging, upon delivery, is removed from the customer's home in order for the packaging to have a higher chance of being disposed of correctly. By June 2015, 50% of product packaging used for delivered products is targeted for return to store for recycling. 3. Establish an intranet as a resource for information relating to sustainable practices and initiatives. 4. Engage four suppliers annually to discuss our commitment to the Covenant and seek opportunities to work collaboratively to ensure we receive environmentally responsible packaging that encourages recycling within all avenues of the supply chain. 1. Harvey rman has considerably reduced its building waste as a result of its collection and reuse activities for this waste category. A company wide policy now exists that recommends to franchisees that their building waste be collected, recycled and reused on future building projects. New stores opened by Harvey rman will have recycling facilities installed for paper, cardboard and polystyrene from opening date. 2. formal recommendation has been made during this reporting period. Despite this policy still being developed, many stores already have adopted this initiative. 3. Whilst a Harvey rman Sustainability Committee has been formed the work of the committee is in its infancy and as such no intranet has been established. 4. For the period one major supplier has been engaged to ensure all packaging supplied to Harvey rman is only made from recycled content. KPI 7: % signatories showing other Product Stewardship outcomes. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI Harvey rman was to form a sustainability committee to form a broad range of waste reduction initiatives across the group. 2.Actively engage consumers via an internet survey to collect information regarding how the customers disposed of the packaging their purchased product/s came in. Consumers are to also be able to offer suggestions for areas of improvement. 3. Ten Harvey rman franchised stores are to participate in an environmental certification program conducted by an external contractor. 4. Conduct an internal assessment in regards to how stores and warehouses reuse, recycle and dispose of packaging materials received with delivered goods. 1. A sustainability committee was formed and are working on a range of initiatives which will eventually form Harvey rman's sustainability policy. 2. Consumer survey is scheduled for December For the reporting period, an environmental certification program occurred in six stores. Recommendations from the program are being considered for all stores involved. 4. NSW, SA and WA stores were reviewed by Harvey rman's waste contractors. This equates to about half of the franchised store network as being reviewed. Recommendations were made for optimising recycling in many of these 100 stores.
KPI 8: Reductions in packaging items in the litter stream. Please indicate your progress this year towards achieving your annual targets and milestones for KPI Harvey rman hosted an annual 'clean up your store day' as a fun and collaborative way of reducing existing litter around stores as well as promoting recycling. 2. Polystyrene cups are to be phased out of use in the corporate office. 1. In 2011 a majority of stores participated in this initiative. 2. Polystyrene cups have been eliminated from the Corporate Office. PART C Your Experiences Please use the fields below to share with us any achievements, good new stories or areas of difficulty in making progress against your plan and the Covenant Goals and KPIs. Provide as much detail as you feel is appropriate. 24. Key achievements or good news stories. Having waste contractors in place providing recycling services as well as recommendations to Harvey rman franchisees across Australia is a huge success story for Harvey rman. Previously it was left to stores to organise this themselves and there were little to no recycling services in place. Increasing the percentage of waste diverted from landfill from 22% to 31% is another key success factor, considering our target was to have 25% of waste diverted. The formation of a Harvey rman sustainability committee ensures that there will be ongoing commitment to sustainable business practices and initiatives and is part of Harvey rman's overall social responsibility. 25. Areas of difficulty in making progress against Covenant KPIs. As a franchised business that does not own or manufacture any company branded products, Harvey rman can not influence product packaging used in its supply chain. Collaboration with suppliers and influence over suppliers has been impossible in regards to packaging types used. However, although quantitative data has not yet been established, it is envisaged that many of Harvey rman's key suppliers are APC signatories and are therefore already likely to be actively pursuing mutual goals. 26. Any other comments.
