6 Reading Year 3 Read accurately at speed focusing on understanding rather than decoding individual words. With support justify views about what they have read. Answering comprehension questions with detail. Use dictionaries to check the meaning of unknown words. Year 4 Continue to develop more independent, fluent and enthusiastic readers who read widely and frequently. Justify views about what they have read using evidence from the text. Drawing inferences such as characters thoughts and motives from their actions. Developing vocabulary. Please also read to your child- enabling them to access more challenging texts, styles and concepts including non-fiction.
7 Writing and spelling Year 3 Develop fluent handwriting increasing legibility and consistency. Developing an awareness of the reader. Spelling list Year 3 and 4 list. Drafting and editing as part of the writing process. Learning grammar definitions. Year 4 Developing writing stamina and the ability to engage the reader. Accurate spelling. Consideration of purpose of task, layout and the reader. Opportunity to try for a pen license. Improving understanding of grammar terms. What profile does writing have with you at home? How can we raise it further?
8 Year 3 Maths Year 4 Counting forwards and backwards in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100. Times table facts. (3, 4, 8) Fractions - read, recognise and use fractions as numbers. Add and subtract fractions within a whole. Addition and subtraction up to three digits. Multiplication and division TU x U TU U Problem Solving unpicking one and two step word problems involving all 4 number operations. Counting forwards and backwards in multiples of 6, 7, 9 25 and Times table facts. (All up to 12x12) Fractions- recognise equivalent fractions. Add and subtract fractions with same denominator. Addition and subtraction up to four digits. Multiplication and division HTU x U HTU U Explaining how and why to develop reasoning skills and convince others of findings.

11 Play times There are lots of different areas designated for use at playtimes: The Quad The Bedery The Music Garden Two areas for football Free play areas. Play time also provides an opportunity for a rest and a snack- but please keep them healthy. We are a nut free school.

13 Lunchtimes Lunchtimes are carefully staggered to ensure there is time to eat in a relaxed and sociable way- and still allow plenty of time for play. Children sit in friendship groups. Children are encouraged to become independent.
14 Rewards Behaviour systems. Each day has a fresh start. Achievement points. Individualised class rewards- Star of the day Group of the week etc. with show and tell opportunities. Head teacher awards. Stickers/ certificates. Smiles and encouragement! Certificates linked to our school values.
15 Home learning. Spelling: Weekly spelling linked to phonic / spelling development and topic wordsthis will be taught in the week and tested on a Friday. Please try and write the spellings into 3 sentences. We try and check spellings sent home are used correctly in independent writing in school. Home Learning Tasks: Spelling weekly. Reading (10 mins. daily) Weekly home learning task (which crosses a weekend) linked to English, maths or topic work.
16 How can you help? Ensuring you arrive in time for the bell. By saying goodbye on the playground. Only come into school through the front office. Help your child become more independent. Helping in class, reading, art, library, resource preparation. Please speak to your class teacher. Adult support on trips. (Please see the office for a DBS clearance check) Become part of our St Bede Reading Army!
17 Holiday learning Just a few ideas to help support your child at home in the holidays and prepare them for starting their new year in September Help them to practise the Year 3 / 4 spelling list. Help them to tell the time. Play word games (hangman using words from the spelling appendix) Summer reading challenge at the library. Baking great for weighing and scales. Helping with shopping adding the bill. Writing postcards.
18 For September Please ensure you arrive in time to find your child s line up spot on the playground Children to say goodbye to parents on the playground and walk into school independently alongside their friends. All children to have a named PE kit in school on the first day of term as this may be a PE day and we aim to start right away with a typical timetable. Children to arrive in appropriate school uniform as discussed earlier. Please ensure any hair braids and nail varnish are removed following the holidays. Children to bring their book bag and a clearly labelled water bottle to keep in the class. Have a lovely rest and enjoy the holidays!
