2 Antennen. Electronic Advanced Xpol Antenna Standards Kathrein Xpol antennas for polarization diversity represent the latest development stage in antenna technology. An ever increasing number of network operators are coming to appreciate the real advantages of only having to install dual +/- 45 polarized antennas for a complete sector site, where previously 6 or 9 vertically polarized antennas had to be installed. For polarization diversity to function properly it is very important that the different polarized signals are as independent as possible of each other (principle of uncorrelated signals). The most important point of view in this context is the so-called Cross-polar ratio (CPR), i.e. the ratio of the signal levels of similar polarizations compared to dissimilar polarizations. The CPR should be quoted for the whole sector width (+/- 6 ), not just for the main radiating direction. The antenna gain is already considerably reduced at the sector edges, therefore a CPR as high as possible is desired. The system suppliers demand at least for +/- 6 from the main direction. Kathrein Xpol antennas more than fulfil these requirements in this critical area. 3 Antennen. Electronic Most of the Xpol antennas on the market are based on the so-called patch technology and on printed circuit boards for power-splitting purposes. Kathrein, however, have for many years used the proven dipole-type technology together with a low-loss cable harness, which clearly offers more opportunities for perfecting certain antenna characteristics. We present the new, so-called A-Panels as our concept for the 9 MHz Xpol antenna range. We adapted the excellent and well proven mechanical design used in our range of GSM 18 antennas for these A-Panels. Instead of a fibre-glass cover screwed and sealed to an aluminium backplate, the radome now consists of a closed, selfsupporting fibre-glass profile into which the metal parts of the antenna are inserted. There are no drill-holes at all in the profile which is closed by two end caps with short sealing rings. This completely closed design offers ideal permanent protection against environmental influences and also increases the mechanical stability of the antennas. Apart from the existing comprehensive range of Xpol antennas which can be found in our catalogues, we now also have low gain versions for GSM 9 with a length of 656 mm. Advantages of Kathrein s dipole Xpol antennas compared to typical printed board solutions: 1. Excellent cross polar ratio over azimuth The dipole design delivers remarkable cross polar ratio not only in the main direction but also across the complete sector. 4. High isolation Patent pending decoupling elements ensure an isolation between the two polarization inputs of min. > (typically 5 ) 2. Low intermodulation products Unlike printed circuit antennas, the intermodulation products are typically -15 c. Low internal losses The cable harness provides a low loss power distribution, which enables shorter antenna lengths referred to gain values 5. Constant electrical performance under bad weather conditions Due to the dipole design, rain, ice and snow have only little effect on the electrical parameters such as VSWR, isolation and cross polar ratio

6 Antennen. Electronic Dual Band Xpol Antennas for GSM 9 and GSM 18 The demand for Dual Band Antennas is constantly increasing as ever more GSM 9 operators are also getting GSM 18 licences. A few simple versions are already available on the market, i.e. versions for vertical polarization or antennas with dual-polarization, where the 9 MHz and 18 MHz systems are arranged separately, one above the other. At the end of 1998 resp. beginning of 1999 Kathrein will be launching sophisticated Dual Band Antennas which are able to operate in the cross-polarization mode with interlocked radiating elements for both 9 MHz and 18 MHz, whereby the antenna length is determinated by a single band 9 MHz version. 7 Antennen. Electronic Kathrein Dual Band Antennas therefore offer the following advantages: 1. Only one antenna is required for both bands. 2. All the advantages of Kathrein s single band Xpol antennas also apply to Kathrein s Dual Band Antennas.. The dimensions are identical to those of a pure 9 MHz Antenna. If an existing GSM 9 station is extended to become a GSM 9 / 18 station the appearance, wind load and the type of attachment will all remain unaltered. 4. The solution using integrated combiners leads to considerable savings in feeder cables; if an existing site is upgraded no further feeder cables are required apart from those already installed. 5. The enclosed data sheets nos / and / show antenna versions of 1. m and 2 m length. We are also planning to introduce further versions with lengths of.65 m und 2.6 m.

12 Antennen. Electronic Omni Antennas for Microcell Outdoor Systems Unobtrusive omni antennas for both GSM 9 and GSM 18 are now available especially for microcell applications. These versions are similar to our Indoor Antennas, but are suitable for outdoor operation and are fitted with an N connector. Azimuth Adjustment Tool for all Eurocell Panel Types Our existing tool 75 7 is only suitable for use with the F-Panel product range. The adjustment tool can now be used for positioning all directional antennas in the 8 / 9 MHz range as well as the 18 / 19 MHz range (Eurocell antennas, A-Panels, F-Panels). Comparison of Mechanical and Electrical Downtilt Whilst the desired downtilt angle remains constant over the whole azimuth range for antennas with electrical downtilt, this is only achieved in the main radiating direction for antennas with mechanical downtilt and is reduced to in the +/- 9 directions from the main radiating direction (tilt axis). The horizontal radiation pattern is thereby also affected - as the mechanical downtilt angle increases, the half-power beam width referred to the horizon becomes increasingly greater. Common coverage calculations for network planning cannot take this effect into account and under certain circumstances it can be the reason for unexpected interferences caused by other cells. On the other hand, antennas with electrical downtilt do not produce such problems. The shape of the horizontal pattern remains constant and thus corresponds to the patterns without downtilt on which the calculations are based.

15 Azimuth Adjustment Tool Precise azimuth adjustment for mast mounted antennas can easily be achieved by using the azimuth adjustment tool. Set this angle on the scale of the adjustment tool. Place the adjustment tool onto the antenna and tighten the clamping device. Use the telescope to aim at the target object, if necessary, use elevation compensation. Then rotate the antenna until the target object appears in the telescope. * Observe the position of the stopper when fitting the azimuth adjustment tool.

Horizontal half-power beam width increases with rising downtilt angle. Resulting gain reduction depends on azimuth direction (can rarely be considered in network planning).
